Guillermo del Toro To Direct Lovecraft’s ‘At The Mountains Of Madness’ With The Help Of James Cameron

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 09:31 PM PDT

One of the countless movie projects that Guillermo del Toro has wanted to direct is an adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft horror title, but many obstacles have stood in its way.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2010 this past weekend, we found out that del Toro was writing and producing Disney's The Haunted Mansion, and we got a little taste of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, which he's also writing and producing. The thing we did not find out was what he would actually be directing next, which he promised would be a horror and we would know soon enough.

According to reports from Deadline, that movie will indeed be Lovecraft's 1931 novel, At the Mountains of Madness...finally!

The main issues that financiers have had is that del Toro needed his movie to be a period film, and he needed it to be R-rated. Movies like that are really hard to market, and so studios, such as Universal in this case, haven't wanted to pay for it. Thankfully, Guillermo cares more about his craft than money, and hasn't budged on either front to get it made sooner. [...]

Watch Now: ‘Monsters’ Trailer & Clip Offer ‘District 9′ Vibes

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 07:51 PM PDT

My favorite movies when it comes to pre-release hype are those little films that make a lot of noise on the festival circuit or have an entertaining viral marketing campaign behind them. Monsters is a movie like that.

The movie is directed by Gareth Edwards, a relative newcomer with a few unknown titles under his belt supported by some visual effect work. It tells the story of a time when life has been discovered in other parts of the universe and a probe has been sent out to collect samples. The probe crashes in Central America on its way back in, and new lifeforms begin emerging and growing rapidly.

Click on over to the other side to check out a clip from the movie and a new trailer!

The thing that stands out about Monsters is the size. This is a film that it is said to have cost as little as $15,000 to make -- making it a candidate to become the next Paranormal Activity, District 9, or The Blair Witch Project, which cost very little to produce but made a lot more upon release. Of those movies this definitely has a District 9 vibe to it, and if it's even remotely close to being that good, it's already a must-see. [...]

Must Watch: ‘Let Me In’ Comic-Con Trailer & Posters Released

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 05:26 PM PDT

You may or not have read our coverage of the Let Me In panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2010 (Read: SDCC 2010: 'Let Me In' Panel & Footage Description ). If so, you will know that a new trailer was shown. If not, well...a new trailer was shown! A couple of fantastic new posters have also been unveiled.

The American remake of Swedish horror film Let the Right One In had been difficult for many people to swallow up to that point, but after said panel and this brand new trailer, we're all beginning to realize that this actually looks really, really good.

Let Me In stars Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), and Elias Koteas (Shutter Island). It's directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and written by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods).

Next Generation Home Entertainment Could Have 20 Times The Space Of Blu-ray Discs

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 02:34 PM PDT

IGN has the details on a brand new technology being developed that will likely one day replace the Blu-ray discs that are currently in the process of trying to make DVDs extinct.

It was announced that Sony has teamed up with Tohoku University to develop a new blue-violet ultrafast laser technology, and that initial testing has shown significant promise for the future of storage capacities. According to the reports, this new technology could hold around 1 terabytes of space -- 20 times the space available today. Blu-ray discs hold around 50GBs of space at the moment, and movies and games don't easily reach that maximum capacity.

If and when this technology is perfected -- which could still be a while -- the options will become seemingly limitless. Imagine being able to buy a disc with FIFTY HD quality movies on it. Entire TV seasons or maybe even series all on one little plastic circle. Multiple video game titles or brand new games with graphics and open-world map sizes that will make gamers weep with joy. These things look to be on the horizon. [...]

Peter Berg’s ‘Battleship’ Adds Singer Rihanna To Cast

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 12:25 PM PDT

Another member has been added to the cast of Peter Berg's board game/alien invasion film, Battleship. The actor isn't actually an actor or actress by trade at all, but a big time pop music superstar, and her name is Rihanna.

The job will mark Rihanna's feature acting debut, and she joins previously cast talents Taylor Kitsch, who will play the lead role, and Alexander Skarsgård, who will play his brother. The screenplay is written by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, and is currently aiming at a June 18, 2012 release date.

Battleship will follow a navy fleet who finds themselves having to deal with the invasion on an alien race who are seeking to mine Earth's materials for use as energy resources. This was probably the last thing people expected to hear as a movie description for something based on the popular Hasbro board game in which you blindly "fire" little plastic pegs in hopes of hitting your opponent's ships, but hey, there's only so much you can do with a Naval fleet these days. SDCC 2010: ‘Paul’ Panel With Simon Pegg, Nick Frost & Seth Rogen (With Video)

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 10:46 AM PDT

The cast of Paul, the upcoming sci-fi comedy by Superbad director Greg Mottola and written by the film's stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, took to the stage at 2010 San Diego Comic-Con to debut a special clip reel made specifically for the fans in attendance. This can be somewhat verified by the fact that it wasn't censored for the general viewing audience due to the few instances of well-timed cursing.

The video opened with a loud pop from the crowd as they showed fanboys Clive Gollings (Frost) and Graeme Willy (Pegg) in the San Diego Convention Center for Comic-Con. The two are on a journey to Roswell, New Mexico, where they encounter a classic-style gray alien named Paul, voiced by Seth Rogen. The trio are being chased by Special Agent Lorenzo Zoil (Jason Bateman) and Agent Haggard (Bill Hader) and accidentally kidnap Ruth Buggs, played by Kristen Wiig.

With the exception of Wiig, the aforementioned actors sat on the panel along with Sigourney Weaver, Jeffrey Tambor, and Joe Lo Truglio -- who actually stood in during the portions of the film that contained the CGI Paul [...]

SDCC 2010: Watch Now: ‘True Blood’ Cast Panel With Alan Ball And Charlaine Harris

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 09:18 AM PDT

At least one woman in every row of the crowded (4,500 capacity) ballroom was wearing a Merlotte's Bar & Grill t-shirt at the True Blood panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, which featured nearly the entire cast of the HBO hit vampire drama.

Show creator Alan Ball kicked off the panel with a special Comic-Con preview reel before having the cast -- including Joe Manganiello (Alcide), Kristin Bauer (Pam), Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica), Denis O'Hare (Russell), Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette), Rutina Wesley (Tara), Stephen Moyer (Bill), and Anna Paquin (Sookie) -- come on stage to talk shop about the huge response this season.

A lot of ground covered but some of the highlights include: Alan Ball has never seen/read Twilight; novelist Charlaine Harris said she plans to do 13 Sookie Stackhouse books that may or may not mirror the story that happens in the television show; and Snoop Dogg really is a fan of True Blood and scheduling has prevented him from making a guest appearance in the past. [READ: Snoop Dogg Really Likes HBO's 'True Blood']

There's also an explicit description of how Moyer filmed the sex scene in which he twists his former vampire lover's head around while... well you get the point.

‘Twilight’ Star Edi Gathegi Cast As Darwin In ‘X-Men: First Class’

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 08:37 AM PDT

If you're like me, you often stay awake at night, wondering if those wonderful Twilight Saga fans are also fans of the Uncanny X-Men. I haven't come to a solid conclusion as of yet, but if there is a contingent of X-Men/Twilight fans, have I got new for you!

Edi Gathegi (Laurent in the Twilight films) has become the latest actor to join Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. Gathegi will be playing the young mutant, Darwin. As you X-fanatics know, Darwin's mutant ability is to reactively evolve. This means he's able to grow gills to breathe with while underwater, become fire retardant when exposed to flames, if he sees M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, he goes blind, saving him from viewing that it.

The Darwin character first appeared in X-Men: Deadly Genesis, a comic book arc that revealed the identity of the third Summers brother to be Vulcan. Darwin was a former friend of Vulcan's, and ends up teaming with him as part of a rescue operation to save Cyclops and company from impending doom on Krakoa, the Living Island. The mission was a huge disaster and led to the team's apparent demise, but Vulcan and Darwin manage to survive the incident [...]
