Hulu Users: Are You Ready & Willing To Start Paying $10 A Month?

Posted:

According to The LA Times, the popular online media-viewing website, Hulu, is getting ready to begin testing a system where users would pay $9.95 per month to watch their favorite TV shows on the site.

The set-up, which may start by late May, would allow anyone to freely watch the newest five episodes of shows from bigger networks such as Fox, NBC, and ABC, but would require you to become a paid monthly subscribers in order to see anything else and catch up with whole seasons.

It's not known yet whether commercials would still play during a paid subscriber's current video watching session, but that will likely be a major factor in whether a subscription is worth it or not. The report indicates that Hulu is second only to YouTube for video viewing, and brings in $100 MILLION just based on its advertising alone. Assuming that a company is even remotely greedy, it wouldn't make much sense for them to stop the ads, despite this approaching fee. [...]

‘Treasure Island’ To Get The ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Treatment

Posted:

In February we found out that producer Lionel Wigram was behind a new take on the tale of the Three Musketeers would be coming to theaters using the same methods used to successfully reinvent Sherlock Holmes with Guy Ritchie, Robert Downey Jr., and Jude Law.

Now comes word that Wigram isn't stopping there -- the producer is now developing a re-imagining of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island for Warner Brothers. The story has seen a ton of film adaptations over the years, including in 1950 with Robert Newton and Bobby Driscoll, and in 1990 with Charlton Heston and Christian Bale.

Just like with Sherlock Holmes and the Musketeers movie, there's a kind of Armageddon/Deep Impact situation going on. Holmes has another new take on the characters with Weill Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen starring; Three Musketeers has a second film being directed by Paul W.S. Anderson on the way. With Treasure Island, the competition is from a studio called Ecosse, who has Niall Johnson (White Noise) working on a script for their vision of the story. [...]

Update On ‘Left 4 Dead 2′ DLC Game Modes

Posted:

We are one day out from the release of new DLC for Left 4 Dead 2 and lots of new information is out.

Remember last week when I said there would be more than one new game mode? Yeah, well how does a minimum of twenty sound? [Read 'Left 4 Dead 2' Add-On Available Next Week.] That's right, each week there will be a new special game type, what the Valve corporation is calling "Mutations." You know like, kill all the zombies you can with a chainsaw that has unlimited gasoline mode. Sounds fun, right? This will certainly offer some variety to an already addicting game. Valve has also stated that they already have twenty lined up for release, with more presumably coming.

Also released is a new poster for the content, which you can see over at the official blog [...]

Will Smith & Tommy Lee Jones Confirmed For 3D ‘Men In Black 3′

Posted:

Talks of a Men in Black III have been showing up quite a bit as of late, and the project has been gaining a lot of momentum. Last we heard, the star that could make or break a third flick, Will Smith, was choosing between returning to his alien-chasing suit and shades and a much less-visible family movie called The City That Sailed set up at his production studio.

Nothing is official yet and this could change tomorrow, but if you're to believe franchise director Barry Sonnenfeld, who spoke to Showbiz 411's Roger Friedman recently, not only is Smith coming back for this trilogy-maker, but he's actually already signed on! Sonnenfeld also shared that another huge question mark, Tommy Lee Jones, is ready to come back as well.

Now, this is pretty exciting if you're like me and want to see what they do with this movie. Even the fact that they want to go 3D with it doesn't bother me at all; I actually think it could be one of those movies where the technology adds a fun element and isn't just there to make money. [...]

Die Hard Year One #8
Written by Howard Chaykin
Art by Gabriel Andrade Jr.
Colors by Stephen Downer
Letters by Ed Dukeshire
BOOM! Studios
Price: $3.99
Release Date: April 14, 2010

John McClane saves the day again in Die Hard Year One #8. As the blackout rages on in New York City John wraps up the hostage situation in true McClane fashion. The real villains behind the blackout and their real plans are revealed. McClane and his partner Detective Olga Cruces work to find the criminals responsible for the blackout and stop the bank robbery in progress. As a nice taste of what is to come there is a nice juicy peek into McClane's future on the last page.

Howard Chaykin continues to blow me away with one of the best licensed properties out there. The twists and turns that usually are easily seen in a prequel work very well in every issue of this comic. Chaykin is great at taking what is essentially an action movie and splitting it into multiple issues while keeping just enough exposition and action in each one of the issues. I continue to put this book at the top of my stack every week, excited to see what happens next in McClane's first year on the Force and how he meets all of his friends and foes before the movies happen [...]

C2E2 2010: Heinberg and Cheung Reteam For ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade’

Posted:

Marvel's Cup of Joe panel Saturday at the 2010 C2E2 was chock full of news and one of the biggest surprises was the announcement of the return of the Young Avengers team of Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung with a new 9-issue miniseries titled Avengers: The Children's Crusade. The series launches in July and will run bi-monthly.

In a video of Heinberg explaining the series, he said that he is currently writing the script for issue six (with plans to have the whole series written by the time the first issue comes out), so even though it will take a year and a half for the series to be completed, it should be on time.

The story will focus on the Young Avengers characters that were created by Heinberg and Cheung, but will also feature the rest of the Avengers. The plot is said to be about Young Avengers member Wiccan as he tries to track down the Scarlet Witch, who may or may not be his mother [...]

Comic Review: The Magdalena #1

The Magdalena #1
Written by Ron Marz
Pencils by Nelson Blake II
Inks by Sal Regla
Colors by Dave McCaig
Letters by Troy Peteri
Top Cow
Price: $3.99
Release date: April 21, 2010

Finally Ron Marz, known for his other recent Top Cow work on Witchblade and Broken Trinity, got his wish to work on The Magdalena and wow did he start off great. I really was blown away by this first issue of the new run. It isn't very easy to please everyone with a first issue, but I think Marz did a great job of mixing in references to the old material as well as inform new readers of what they're in for. Doing all this while peppering in characterization for all of the main cast shows just how much love Marz has for the series.

Let me start off by telling you what The Magdalena is about. After the death and rise of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene, who was said by a few to be his wife, had a daughter. From this daughter started the line of Magdalena, which is the royal bloodline. Each daughter is trained as a warrior to protect the Catholic Church and carries the title of Magdalena, which entitles them to weild the Spear of Destiny -- the spear that pierced Jesus in the side -- as their weapon against evil [...]

C2E2 2010: ‘Fables’ Scribe Bill Willingham’s ‘Mysterly’ Novel Back In Print Next Fall

Posted:

Sunday morning brought an interesting panel at C2E2 2010 with the always entertaining Bill Willingham, writer of Vertigo's Fables, as well as writer for JSA at DC, and the Angel series for IDW. One of the items talked about at the panel was the re-release of a novel Willingham wrote several years ago that's been out of print for a while. The novel is titled Down the Mysterly River and will be released by TOR books sometime in the Fall of 2011.

The story is about a character named Max the Wolf who is mistakenly sent to the wrong afterlife because of his name, and then goes on a wild adventure with a bunch of other animals. Willingham remarked that this novel, which was originally released in limited numbers in 2001, is essentially a "proto-Fables story" and that the book is an unofficial Fables tie-in, so I'm willing to bet that fans of the series will be looking forward to this. Unfortunately, Willingham did not give any information about a follow-up to the official Fables novel, Peter & Max, which was released earlier this year, although he did mention that characters from that book would soon be showing up in the Fables comic [...]
