A South African newspaper's heading read "he won the election, now can he lead a country?" This unhopeful question is referring to Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman), who in 1994 was elected the first black President of an apartheid stricken South Africa. After emerging 27 years from prison for political upheaval, Mr. Mandela had no inclinations to seek revenge on the white Afrikaners who placed the cuffs on him. Instead he disarmed any such thought, and the film, entitled Invictus -- after an 1875 poem by British writer William Earnest Henley -- is attracted to this passive stance which had, at its focal point, the sport of rugby.

Rugby is a primitive sport that glorifies brutality. A character in the film refers to it as a hooligans' game. A bunch of ferocious men never hesitate to jolt another's anatomy, leaving the victim writhing in pain on a field of grass that resembles man's outer state; dirty, muddy, torn and worn. Each team interlocks with the other trying to move the opposition out of place so one team can snatch the ball up and progress it up-field. Despite the over-populated yelling crowd and the groans of the rugby players when their flesh smacks one another, communication is still tried amongst each team with hope of keeping order amongst each other. This does not sound so much like sport. Rather, it has characteristics that resemble wars, battles, and even apartheids (split teams) [...]

Hollywood Great Dennis Hopper Dies At 74

Posted: 29 May 2010 01:08 PM PDT

Actor Dennis Hopper has passed away at the age of 74 after a long fight with prostate cancer. The star had been bravely battling the ferocious disease for many years now, and though the news seemed imminent, it is no less tragic.

With appearances on the Starz series Crash and roles in the movies Hell Ride, Elegy, and Swing Vote, the actor kept right on working until the end of his life. Hopper even has two more films on the one -- one called The Last Film Festival that's finished, and another in post-production called Alpha and Omega which he did the voice of Tony.

But it was a nasty and seemingly out-of-nowhere divorce from his wife of 14-years that had him in the headlines lately, and it was devastating to him both financially and physically. Before his passing, multiple reports indicated that his illness was advanced and that he weighed little more than 100 lbs, and that he was almost completely broke from the divorce.

Thankfully, despite being so sick, Hopper fought tooth and nail against his disease, which allowed him to be there when he was awarded his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in late March, and to see his 74th birthday recently. [...]

‘Dracula: The Company Of Monsters’ Debuting This August From BOOM! Studios

Posted: 29 May 2010 10:52 AM PDT

Good news horror fans, this August, BOOM! Studios will be debuting a new ongoing comic book series titled Dracula: The Company Of Monsters.

The book will feature a stellar crew including acclaimed writers Kurt Busiek and Daryl Gregory (Pandemonium) along with artist Scott Godlewski (Codebreakers). It will also feature covers by artist Dan Brereton (The Nocturnals) and Ron Salas.

Busiek had this to say about the upcoming book:

"Dracula's a character who's always fascinated me and getting a chance to build something firmly rooted in Dracula's real-world (and Stoker-novel) history, but with a very modern edge, is the kind of creative challenge I love. It's the world's greatest vampire against the corporate world -- and there's no easy way to tell who's the real villain, and who's the hero. I'm thrilled to be working with Daryl, Scott and BOOM! on this. Putting it together feels like the early days of working on Conan, and I think the results are going to be a real treat for readers." ‘Scream 4′ Brings In Emma Roberts; New Teaser Poster

Posted: 29 May 2010 06:26 AM PDT

Dimension Films' has announced that they have cast Emma Roberts as one of the heroines in the upcoming next chapter of their mega-popular horror franchise, Scream 4. The studio has also released a teaser poster that you can see by clicking the image to the right.

Roberts is of course the 19-year-old daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts, and has appeared in mostly kid and teen-aimed movies like Nancy Drew, Hotel for Dogs, and the TV show Unfabulous. Clearly Roberts is ready to try and break out of as a more serious adult actress with the casting as one of the lead roles of this new movie.

From the start, it seems that the plan for this fourth film was to begin a new trilogy of movies, which is why a young star like Roberts is being brought in. She's basically the new Sidney Prescott, and that could mean Sidney, who will be once again played by Neve Campbell, will not be having the best of luck this time around. [...]
