Eclipse Rakes In $65.8 Million On Opening Day

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is smashing movie records left and right. It had a record-breaking theatrical release and midnight screening. But it seems that the third movie from the film franchise based on the series of novels by American author Stephenie Meyer is still not satisfied. Given the hype and how devoted the Twihards are to Edward Cullen, Bella Swan, and Jacob Black, they will surely rush into theaters to make Eclipse eclipse other box-office records.

Eclipse was released last June 30, and it opened in record-setting 4,416 theaters throughout North America. And within 24 hours of Wednesday, it grossed an estimated $68.5 million at the box-office, highest grossing Wednesday opening in domestic history. It grabbed the record from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen which was set last year with $62 million. The past holders were Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with $58 million in 2009, Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix with $44 million in 2007, and Spider Man 2 with $40 million in 2004. It also is the highest grossing single-day summer movie, exceeding the one-day gross of The Dark Knight with $67.2 million.

But the film fell short from the record made by The Twilight Saga: New Moon last year for having the biggest single-day opening in domestic history. The second installment of the Twilight series took in $72.7 million.

Some predicts that the movie can trump of Spider Man 2 for having the highest grossing Independence Day Weekend with $180.1 million or adjusted for inflation, $230 million. Movie analysts calculate that Eclipse that it will cross over the $200 million mark within the weekend.
