The Expendables Received Mixed Reviews From Critics Posted: 12 Aug 2010 08:19 PM PDT Share with your friends Early reviews of the upcoming action flick The Expendables have been released. The latest action flick from Rambo and Rocky star Sylvester Stallone has received mixed reviews from critics. Stallone also directed and wrote the film, which he said is a throwback to the action films of the 80s and early 90s, during the times when they had tons of explosives and little special CGI effects. The film also stars some of the biggest names in that era like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, and Randy Couture. The Expendables was given 45% positive reviews based on 65 reviews counted and has an average rating of 5.2/10. The critic consensus on the review aggregate was "It makes good on the old-school action it promises, but given all the talent on display, The Expendables should hit harder." At the Metacritic website, it has a score of 40 out of 100 based on 11 critics, with a score distribution: 2 positive, 7 neutral, and 2 negative. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave it 75: The way that Stallone directs, though, every machete thrust and relentless round of bullet spray is staged with a certain undeniable… conviction. Retreads of The Dirty Dozens are now a dime dozen but what's distinctive – and backwardly fun – about The Expendables is that it's completely low-tech, brute-force movie, a real meathead jamboree. There are no video-surveillance scenes, no computerized weaponry or digital gloss. The movie doesn't have that stuff because Stallone doesn't think that way. Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter (score: 70): The body count is high and the personalities click in this old-school testosterone fest. Peter Debruge of Variety (score: 40): A nearly incoherent all-stars-on-deck actioner that plays like Grown-Ups in nitro or a brutish, blue collar Ocean's Eleven…. Though the muddled execution falls far short of the talent involved, the Lionsgate release is loud and explosive enough that sequels will follow. The film will hit theaters this August 13.
