Beastie Boy Adam Yauch’s Oscilloscope Laboratories Grabs Holiday Horror ‘Rare Exports’ Posted: 20 Sep 2010 07:42 PM PDT Oscilloscope Laboratories, the film company started by Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch, has acquired the rights to Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, a new horror-comedy from Finland that takes childhood fantasy to a whole new realm. The movie comes from director Jalmari Helander, who based it on his own popular short films, and tells the story of an archeological excavation that turns up none other than Santa Claus himself. Unfortunately, he's not quite the Santa we've all grown up knowing from stories and songs. Of the acquisition, Yauch said "This is really a unique film, the filmmaking exceptional, Jalmari's sense of timing, perfect. I'm tempted to say it's like the Coen brothers meets The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, but RARE EXPORTS is so original in its feel and approach that I'll refrain from such comparisons and simply say: gas up your snowmobiles, load your shotguns and smoke 'em if you got 'em — 'cause we intend to uncage this sucker in theaters for the holidays." Posted: 20 Sep 2010 05:42 PM PDT Mars Attacks! Blu-ray | DVD Directed by Tim Burton Starring Jack Nicholson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Jack Black, Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening, Glenn Close Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Release Date September 7, 2010 If anything can be learned from Tim Burton's Mars Attacks!, I believe it is this: Any movie that is based off a card game is not headed to anywhere good. You can pretty much gather the plotline of the movie just by reading the title, but just for sake of the review, let's go through the basics. When UFOs are discovered flying toward planet Earth, The President and Washington's top scientists debate on what their next course of action should be. Believing that the visitors are a friendly bunch, the President sends our military to greet them as they land. With the whole world watching, aliens show their true colors and they don't appear to be in the mood to give hugs. Now, as Mars attacks, it will take an unlikely hero to step up and defend the Earth from being destroyed […] |
Blu-ray Review: Supernatural Season 5 Posted: 20 Sep 2010 04:10 PM PDT Supernatural: The Complete Fifth Season Blu-ray | DVD Created by Eric Kripke Starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Release Date: September 7, 2010 Back in the 80s and 90s, we watched the Ghostbusters take care of all of the ghosts, ghouls, and everything that went "bump" in the night. And as much as I loved watching them do their thing, there are now two guys, brothers in fact, that are a lot more badass now than ever. Enter Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, the stars of the hit CW TV series Supernatural. For the past five years we have watched them hunt and kill almost everything from ghosts to demons, wendigos, vampires, and even angels. No matter what you can always count on them. And just in time for the season 6 premiere, which airs September 24, 2010 on the CW, we have the Season 5 release on Blu-ray and DVD […] |

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 12:21 PM PDT THX 1138 Blu-ray | DVD Directed by George Lucas Starring Robert Duvall, Donald Pleasence, Don Pedro Colley, Maggie McOmie, Ian Wolfe Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Release date: September 7, 2010 Complacent with his narrative and uninspired to produce anything more profound because he is relying on his visuals to do the work, director George Lucas attempts to create a 25th century utopian future gone awfully awry. Literary minds depicted such sterile, lifeless, and bleak environments with precise detail. Orwell (1984), Huxley (A Brave New World), and filmmaker Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey) tackled dystopian and futuristic atmospheres with a potent narrative behind it. They called to our attention truly believable and paradoxical relationships that integrated humanity with sterility, freedom with captivity. Lucas' 1971 science-fiction film THX-1138 lacks his predecessors' originality because he is not capable of excavating beyond his beautifully eerie aesthetics. If he would be able to he would find a story that would be broader and deeper in its range. Instead, THX-1138 is a film sadly reduced to being revered merely for its visuals […] |
‘Friday Night Lights’ Star Kyle Chandler & Elle Fanning Join J.J. Abrams’ ‘Super 8′ Posted: 20 Sep 2010 10:40 AM PDT Not since May have we heard anything significant regarding the ultra-secretive new project from director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg, called Super 8. Back then it was the release of the unique teaser trailer (Read: Watch Now! Teaser Trailer For J.J. Abrams & Steven Spielberg's 'Super 8′ Released), which did its job in grabbing our attentions, but was also created before any actors were even cast. The movie had remained uncast since the release of the teaser, until now of course. Two new talents have joined the film in Kyle Chandler, who's best known for his head coach role on TV's Friday Night Lights and from Peter Jackson's King Kong, and Elle Fanning, the younger sister of Dakota Fanning who's done plenty of acting herself, including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and the upcoming holiday film, The Nutcracker in 3D. At the moment, all details are being kept under wraps, including who these two new additions will be playing. [...] |
Blu-Ray Review: Matrix Reloaded Posted: 20 Sep 2010 08:37 AM PDT Matrix Reloaded Blu-ray | DVD Directed by The Wachowski Brothers Starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, Laurence Fishburne Warner Bros Home Entertainment Release date: September 7, 2010 Ah, remember the halcyon days of early 2003? When everyone still loved The Matrix and we all waited with anticipation to see the genius that would be Matrix Reloaded? You remember those days, don't you, and you had bought into the hype just as much as everyone else. Nowadays, there are more people who complain about Matrix Reloaded than those who try to defend it. The Matrix trilogy has been available on Blu-ray for a number of years, and the first film has been available by itself for a while, and now Warner Bros Home Entertainment has gotten around to releasing the second movie by itself. The question you will have to answer for yourself is whether you just want to watch the first film and forget the others exist, or if you want to watch the entire trilogy as a whole. I'm actually not as much against this movie as a lot of people are. Sure it gets a bit, shall we say, goofy towards the end, but it's filmed with some pretty incredible and memorable action sequences. I still marvel at the execution of the highway chase scene that is very much the high point of the film. Hugo Weaving still turns in an entertaining performance as Agent Smith, and makes any scene he's in worth watching [...] |
