NYCC 2010: ‘The Thing’ Prequel Banner Posted: 08 Oct 2010 09:50 PM PDT On my way into the 2010 New York Comic-Con on Friday afternoon at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, I noticed a banner for The Thing prequel hovering high above the entrance to the Con, so I decided to snap a photo of it. Check out the banner here above (click for larger, full view). The banner is a teaser that has the name of the film, which even though it's a prequel, is simply titled The Thing, the same name as the 1982 John Carpenter film from which it stems (confusing? I think so). There's also its release date -- April 29, 2011 -- along with a nifty tagline: "Before it was unleashed, it was discovered." [...] |
NYCC 2010: Marvel’s X-Men Panel Posted: 08 Oct 2010 08:55 PM PDT Friday at New York Comic-Con 2010 brought another edition of Marvel's X-Men panel, and attendees got a few sneak peeks of some upcoming projects. Probably the biggest announcement at the panel was the one with the least details. Towards the end of the panel, a new series called Age of X was announced with a promo picture with some obvious and not so obvious silhouettes of characters. Panel host and Marvel Sales Manager Arune Singh described it as "the end of mutants as we know them" and made it pretty clear that this series would at least be a spiritual successor (if not an actual sequel) to the fan-favorite "Age of Apocalypse" storyline from the 1990s. Singh said that more details including who will be writing the series, who will be handling the art, and who the mystery characters are will be revealed on Marvel's webpage in a few weeks. The series will be out in January 2011 [...] |
Is The Force Strong In You? Acquire Your Very Own Jedi Bath Robe Today! Posted: 08 Oct 2010 07:22 PM PDT Last year around this very same time, we found out that the great ThinkGeek had received permission from George Lucas and his LucasFilm to create and sell the Tauntaun Sleeping Bag, which originated as an April Fool's Day joke and exploded in undeniable popularity (Read: Must Own: The Famed 'Star Wars' Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Is Now A Reality!). Now comes the next great product that Star Wars fanatics will have to own: the Jedi bath robe. Yes indeed, now you can be a noble Jedi any time of the day, and it won't require you wear a Halloween costume in January, which might just lead to nervous friends and family members who one day randomly stop calling. The robe is a large one-size-fits-all offering, and yes, the Jedi logo is embroidered on it as well...you know, to prove you're really a Jedi and not some dude who bought their gear online. That'd be like buying your PhD from www.24hourdocter.com, and the other real Jedi would no doubt bully you and steal your chocolate milk. [...] |
Natalie Portman Decides NOT To Star In ‘Pride And Prejudice And Zombies’ Posted: 08 Oct 2010 03:02 PM PDT We here at Geeks of Doom are big fans of the wave of hybrid novels, taking classic stories or historical figures and adding horrific elements such as zombies, monsters, aliens, and vampires, to name a few. This crazy idea started with author Seth Grahame-Smith's alteration of the classic Jane Austen work, Pride and Prejudice, which was called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Many different types have followed like Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and a lot of them even have movie projects in the works. Being the lead horse it is, a movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies looked to be well on the way, and last December we found out that actress Natalie Portman would be producing the movie through her Handsomecharlie Films banner, and that she would also be starring in the role of Elizabeth Bennett...though sadly not all good things last. Marvel Joins DC In The Price War; Announces Drop In Comics Prices Posted: 08 Oct 2010 10:53 AM PDT With DC Comics announcing that they are dropping the price on their regular 32-page single issues, I wondered if Marvel Comics would follow suit. Turns out I didn't have to wait long, because it has now been announced that Marvel in fact will be dropping the price on some of their titles. Speaking Thursday at the ICv2 Conference on Comics & Digital, Marvel Senior Vice President of Sales and Circulation David Gabriel announced that any new books released after January of 2011 will not be priced at $3.99. Gabriel spoke about how Marvel's relative success in digital distribution has allowed the company to decrease their prices. While sales of digital copies of Marvel's comics has not passed sales of print copies yet, they are still apparently strong enough to make this move [...] |
NYCC 2010: ‘Batman Beyond’ Makes the Jump From Mini to Ongoing Posted: 08 Oct 2010 10:20 AM PDT Not content to wait until the New York Comic-Con starts, DC got a jump on Wednesday by announcing that the Batman Beyond comic book series, previously planned as a 6-issue mini-series will now get an ongoing series. January will see a new #1 issue, featuring the same creative team as the mini. Writer Adam Beechen and artist Ryan Benjamin will continue to bring readers the further adventures of Terry McGinnis, the Batman of the future. The mini has seen McGinnis take on some version of the Batman villain Hush. McGinnis, with assistance from Bruce Wayne, has had to protect some of the Batman's former villains from a bandaged foe, and while the whole mystery has yet to be revealed, it's been a fun ride so far, and it seems that readers have reacted enough that DC thought it was a good idea to take the series full time [...] |
‘The Walking Dead’ Novels Coming In 2011 Posted: 08 Oct 2010 09:16 AM PDT The Walking Dead started out as a comic book series, and will soon see life as a TV series on AMC, and now it will set out to conquer another format as a series of prose novels, set to release sometime next year. As reported by Deadline, Robert Kirkman's story about life after the zombie apocalypse will get three novels published by St. Martins Press's Thomas Dunne books. The three books will be based on ideas and an outline from Kirkman, with horror novelist Jay Bonansinga writing the actual texts. Bonansinga has several novels to his credit already, and looking at the description of the books (Perfect Victim, Twisted and Shattered) he seems to be a writer whose style will fit well with Kirkman's own style. Deadline says that the story will take place in the Walking Dead "universe," so I'm not sure if it will feature Rick Grimes and the rest of the cast of the comic book series, or if Bonansinga will create his own characters and keep them separate from the main cast [...] |
