Woman Kills Her Own Baby Son Over Facebook’s ‘Farmville’ Game

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 09:56 PM PDT

A 22-year-old woman in Jacksonville, Florida named Alexandra V. Tobias has pleaded guilty in the death of her 3-month-old son, Dylan.

The reason for such a despicable act? She tells investigators that she was busy playing the highly popular Facebook game, Farmville, when the child started crying. She explains that she became so angry, she shook the baby, went and smoked a cigarette to try and calm down, and then shook the baby more. She also added that while she was shaking him, he might have hit his head on something.

Tobias has been charged with second-degree murder, and could face up to life in prison...though it is noted that this sentence could be much, much less because "state guidelines" place the charge at 25-50 years imprisonment.

Farmville is a real-time strategy game that allows users to maintain their own virtual farm, plowing your lands, planting crops, harvesting what you've grown, and raising your own various livestock. [...]

Geek Humor: Instructions For ‘Inception’ & Other Pop Culture Pumpkins

Inception Pumpkin

Earlier today, we told you about the Pumpkin Geek, a master pumpkin carver who creates jack-o-lanterns with the likeness of popular movie and TV characters.

Now, the funny peeps over at College Humor have posted "Seven Easy Jack-O-Lantern Ideas," two of which are movie-related and worth noting. Of course, each instructional illustration is highly humorous, but yet surprisingly informative as well. There's one for making an Inception pumpkin -- Pumpkinception -- which, like the film, is quite elaborate. There's another for The Human Centipede -- The Centipede Pumpkin -- which, like the film, makes me want to just vomit at the idea of this concept, and this is just a damn pumpkin!

Click the image at right for the Inception illustration, and be sure to head over to College Humor for the full effect, and to check out their other clever pumpkin ideas [...]

Want To See What Tim Burton’s Trippy ‘Superman’ Would Have Looked Like?

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 07:04 PM PDT

This is a reach back in time, but far before Bryan Singer made his big budget Superman adaptation, Tim Burton was actually set to direct the movie from a script by Kevin Smith. It sounds strange to even think of such a duo now -- and if you've seen Smith's An Evening With Kevin Smith then you know of the many hilarious stories that came from that endeavor -- but it was happening for a time, and Burton did some work setting up his Man of Steel.

Steve Johnson, a special effects and makeup artist who worked on the movie before it was scrapped, has now released a ton of pictures from what they came up with. Most of the images show either the test suit they were working on for Superman, and some concept stuff they were developing.

You can see exactly what we mean by clicking on over to the other side. Be warned, Superman purists, you may experience sharp pains in various parts of your body just by thinking of what this would have looked like on the big screen! [...]

First Look At Alan Moore’s ‘League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century: 1969′ Cover

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 04:53 PM PDT

It's been a few years since we last saw Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but today we got our first glimpse of the next book in the series with the cover for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century: 1969.

Check out the cover here at right (click for larger, full view).

Top Shelf released the psychedelic cover from series artist Kevin O'Neill, which features... some collection of characters? I guess. It's hard to tell at this point, although I have to assume the character in the middle is Mina Murray, which means the light-haired gentlemen would be Alan Quartermain, and I don't know who the dark haired gentlemen is. What the release of the image does tell us is that the story looks to be on set for release some time next year.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century is the fourth (if you count The Black Dossier) story in Alan Moore's saga of a collection of fictional British characters fighting more villainous fictional British characters [...]

7 Of The Most Memorable Werewolf Transformations In Movie History

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 03:48 PM PDT

There's a few things that horror fans really crave for. The first signs of a zombie outbreak or when they eventually close in on one of our survivors. The slasher killer's next big kill, and how crazy and unique it might be. A vampire sinking its fangs into an unsuspecting victim in that ultimate moment of lust and sustenance. And of course, the transformation of man, humble and scared, into the bloodthirsty, ferocious werewolf.

These are but a few things that really get the horror fans' blood pumping away, but we at Geeks of Doom decided to take a little time to observe that last example: the werewolf transformation.

Over the years, we've seen countless people suffer through the painful process as their skin expands and grows incredible amounts of hair, bones stretch and contort, joints twist and bend the wrong way, before the creature takes over. If we've learned one thing about this process, it's that it looks like it would be one of the most excruciating things any human being could endure.

Don't wait around (because we knows what happens to all of those sad saps who sit around waiting in horror movies) and be sure to click on over to the other side and enjoy with us 7 of the Most Memorable Werewolf Transformations In Movie History [...]

Russia Finds Long Lost Silent Films; Restores & Presents To The United States

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 01:45 PM PDT

One thing some people might not know (including myself before reading this), is that the United States was responsible for more films in the 20th century than any other country, but when it came to all of the silent movies made in the late 1800s to early 1900s, only 20% of them still exist.

The reason for this is a combination of things. On one end, a lot of films of the Silent Era were lost to lack of care and the natural deterioration that comes with time. On another end, American film studios owned all rights to their movies, and they handled international distribution their own way...even down to subtitling the pictures themselves. In doing this, they often changed the title to better suit the various foreign countries the movie was being released in. Combine all of these things together, and you have yourself a perfect storm of methods for losing cinematic artifacts to time.

A very exciting story for fans of cinema comes today, however, with word that Russia has found and identified ten films in their state archive. [...]

Instead of cramming every review into one mammoth review, this year we'll take it one flick at a time, with this little opener stuck at the top of each one.

Picture yourself at a party with all of your closest friends. You're drinking, laughing, and having an all-around great time. Suddenly, you awake to the sounds of screaming and realize one of your friends is dead, and if you don't kill the rest of your closest friends, you all die. Get Your Fanboy Halloween On With The Pumpkin Geek!

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 08:34 AM PDT

How could we, the Geeks of Doom, not love someone called The Pumpkin Geek? it's like discovering a long lost sibling!

This master of the art of pumpkin carving offers you Halloween and autumn fans out there the chance to get your hands on pumpkins bearing the likenesses of some of your favorite geek movie and TV characters. And this isn't some low-quality work we're talking about...no, no -- this is insanely good pumpkin art, with picture perfect results. That, and these bad boys don't go rotten on you. You know, when your glorious pumpkin creation caves into itself after all that hard work? Who needs that?

These pumpkins are strictly for decorative purposes; carved on "everlasting GEMMY artificial pumpkins." I'm not quite sure what this means, but it sounds fancy enough to be worth it.

And the point of this post? No it's not to boost The Pumpkin Geek's sales -- it's already far too close to All Hallows' Eve to even really take advantage of this now -- but to show off some of the phenomenal pumpkins that they've created. You can see a bunch of our favorites by heading down below now! [...]

Watch Now: The ‘Saw’ Franchise In 6:66

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 06:05 AM PDT

Saw

Our friends over at ScreenRant have created a really cool video compilation which recaps the entire Saw movie franchise in 6:66 minutes.

The video covers all six Saw films to catch you up in time to see the final installment, Saw 3D, which opens in theaters this weekend.

I love video recaps like this, but usually the clips go by in a flash and the narration is very quick, but this one for Saw goes at a perfect pace, allowing you to absorb all the plot information and scenes.

Be sure to click through the link to the ScreenRant story to watch the video and also to read their in depth complete guide to the Saw franchise, which is a great refresher on the films. Also, the article is sectioned out, making it easy to get a recap of each movie individually if you want to skip over any of them [...]
