Geek Gear: ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’ T-Shirt Posted: 25 Nov 2010 05:28 AM PST Apparently, it's Bill Murray week. Don't ask me why. Not that I mind cuz I love Bill Murray. Must ask Derek Eads, he started it (more on that in future posts). But, for now, the $9 t-shirt deal of the day over at Teefury today is the Steve Zissou-themed "The Ride Aquatic" by artist Teo Zed. The design is based on Murray's title oceanographer character in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The sale at Teefury began at midnight EST (Thursday, November 25, 2010) and will continue for 24 hours, and once it's over, it's gone forever. Here's what Zed said about the design: I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan and The Life Aquatic is one of my all time favorite movies (also Bill Murray seriously rocks), so creating a design that had something to do with all these things just felt right. Torchwood + Lightsabers + Puppets = Your WTF Geek Pic Of The Day Posted: 24 Nov 2010 04:57 PM PST The other night, after Tom Cheredar and I finished recording TARDISblend 17, we were talking about some random Doctor Who stuff off-air. One of the things that came up in our ridiculous ramblings was, "What Doctor Who needs is some Muppets." It was just a mildly amusing joke at the time, but a couple days later we came across this unexplainable image posted over at the Hell Yeah Tumblr Page featuring the cast of Torchwood meeting the puppets from Avenue Q... with lightsabers! See the image here at right. Quite simply? This is awesome. The next step is someone to Photoshop in the glow from the lightsabers [...] |
Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 Posted: 24 Nov 2010 03:11 PM PST Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 Directed by: David Yates Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint Warner Brothers Release Date: November 19, 2010 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is the seventh installment in the Harry Potter franchise, in which Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), and Ronald Wesley (Rupert Grint) are on a mission to find and destroy the horcruxes, mystical objects that grant immortality, so that the evil Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) is unable to use it to his advantage. The focus of this film is really the acting among the three actors who have been together for so long, and how they have made each character they play their own, and that's really important when you have a setting when there's not a lot of action going on, overall, but I'll talk more about that a little later. I've been a fan of the Harry Potter films for quite some time now, and if you haven't been, The Deathly Hallows Part 1 isn't going to change your mind. To everyone else, however... well, I hesitate to say that you're going to love it [...] |
Mark Wahlberg Not Doing ‘The Crow’ But IS Doing ‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’ Posted: 24 Nov 2010 12:05 PM PST Well...let me start by wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving. None of these stories or our opinions matter without you visiting every day to check us out, and that is something we're truly thankful for this year and hopefully many, many more to come. Now, allow me to ruin your day, sadly. While talking to MTV recently, Mark Wahlberg confirmed that he will be playing the lead role of Nathan Drake in the upcoming video game adaptation of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and that he and director David O. Russell hope to do that come summer. On the brighter side of things, Wahlberg reaffirmed something broke earlier this week by Cinematical, and that's that he won't be starring in the remake of The Crow that was reported recently and had everyone up in arms. Unfortunately for fans of Drake's Fortune, the absolute worst thing you could follow up the Crow news with is word that you're going to play Nathan Drake. We found out last month that O. Russell would be directing the adaptation, and to be honest, it was a very exciting thing to hear about because the game is perfectly set up to become a movie. [...] |
DVD Review: Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series Posted: 24 Nov 2010 11:16 AM PST Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series Blu-ray | DVD | Digital Download (2010) Starring Matt Smith, Karen Gilian, Arthur Darvill BBC Warner Release Date: November 9, 2010 The fifth series of the BBC television show Doctor Who is a refreshing take on the now classic time-traveling adventures of The Doctor and his companions. New show runner Steven Moffat successfully reinvigorates the spirit of every iteration that came before while not alienating newer viewers. Moffat does this by including many subtle visual references to the past Whovian story continuity, the first of which is featured at the end of the series opener The Eleventh Hour in the form of an homage to the ten previous incarnations of The Doctor. For children, casual, and new viewers the story opens with a young Amelia Pond who discovers a crashed TARDIS in her garden and a strange man willing to inspect the eerie crack on her bedroom wall. Matt Smith, the eleventh actor to portray The Doctor, makes his debut on the show and wastes little time asserting a masterful version of the character aside new companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) [...] |
Posted: 24 Nov 2010 08:55 AM PST Faster Directed by George Tillman, Jr. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Carla Gugino, and Maggie Grace Castle Rock Entertainment/CBS Films Release date: November 24, 2010 The ads for Faster would lead you to believe that the film is a simple action movie with a revenge plot, a concept that has been used since the early days of cinema. However, Faster is a revenge plot with more twists and turns than a NASCAR race. Former WWE wrestler Dwayne Johnson plays the character known only as Driver. We see him being released from prison. During his "exit interview," the warden shows pictures of wounded inmates that crossed his path. This sequence cleverly establishes Driver's "badassery" and foreshadows the carnage to come. Driver and his brother pulled a bank robbery, but someone close to them set them up to be robbed by another group of criminals. Driver's brother is murdered while he survives the robbery and goes to jail. While in prison, Driver has had people keeping tabs on the men involved in his brother's killing. Almost immediately upon release, Driver begins exacting vengeance on these people. In the beginning, Driver is a remorseless killing machine, drawing the attention of Detective Cicero (Carla Gugino), who reluctantly teams up with Cop (Billy Bob Thornton) to track down Driver and end his killing spree [...] |
Remembering Eric Carr From KISS: 19th Anniversary Of Drummer’s Passing Posted: 24 Nov 2010 07:31 AM PST This morning when I checked my Twitter feeds, I noticed that Freddie Mercury was trending -- with people celebrating his life on the 19th anniversary of his death. The Queen frontman was most certainly a massive influence, but somebody else important passed away on that day 19 years ago that should also be remembered and honored: Eric Carr from KISS. On November 24, 1991, KISS fans were shaken to discover that Eric Carr had passed away. The 41-year-old drummer had lost his battle with cancer, and the news shattered the hearts of KISS fans internationally. He had been a major influence on them all, and he is still missed to this day. He was one of the most adored members of the band, and one of the most memorable and talented drummers that emerged in the rock world during the 1980s. Born in 1950 in Brooklyn, NY, Eric Carr joined the KISS in 1980 while they were still in make-up as "The Fox," replacing drummer Peter Criss. He was instantaneously welcomed by the fans, and his drumming talents pushed KISS to be a more heavier and modern sounding band in their post-makeup era. Carr can be heard on KISS hits like "I Love It Loud," "Lick It Up," and "Heaven's On Fire." [...] |
