Marvel Reveals Its Next Event: ‘Fear Itself’

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 09:50 PM PST

Fear Itself

In what Marvel was calling a "major press conference" the company announced this its big event for next year. Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, and VP Executive Editors Tom Brevoort and Axel Alonso announced that April will see the release of Fear Itself, a 7-issue series written by Matt Fraction with art by Stuart Immonen. The series will see the biggest characters in the Marvel universe taking on a new villain, some king of god of fear. Aside from the seven issues of the main series there will also be a prologue issue out in March, which will be written by Ed Brubaker and feature art by Scott Eaton.

As with past events, the main story will be contained in the main miniseries, however, the story will spill into any number of regular series and special issues. Brevoort remarked that the number of tie-in issues would approach the number seen during Civil War. We can expect all the major players in the Marvel U to play a part in the adventure at some point, so be prepared for that [...]

Movie Review: True Grit

True Grit

True Grit
Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen
Starring: Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper
Release date: December 22, 2010

Let's see who justly possesses true grit: Is it the grizzled, one-eyed U.S. marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), whose depleted, wobbly, massive stature is indicative of his many battles with criminals and alcohol? How about LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), a prideful Texas Ranger who has a sinister appearance and a ruthless mentality that conceals a heart of gold? What about the murderous villains such as Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) or Lucky Ned Pepper (Barry Pepper)? Unquestionably, all these men have grit, but is it true grit? All of them have been around many years and seen and done many heinous things. They are regular frequenters of this Wild West world that knows of no remorse, killing individuals as if it were a seasonal sport. But what about Matty Ross (Hailee Steinfeld, in a commanding film debut), that 14-year-old girl whose appearance is as pure as the snowfall? Do not let this hide the inner strengths she possesses. She wants to enter this western world of wildness only to avenge the death of her father's who was killed by Chaney. She has grit for even thinking of entering this environment. And it is true grit because this is a personal journey that she needs to fulfill.

Very furtively True Grit instigates the idea of Matty becoming consumed by vengeance more so than any man in the movie because she is willing to put at risk her purity. She has not yet been tainted by evilness, but she puts herself in a position to be acquainted with it. Joel and Ethan Coen construct a tale of lost innocence by making Matty their center of devotion. Watch her as the Coens do, as she puts herself in the company of men whose innocence was taken away from them a long time ago. They have nothing to lose. She has an abundance to lose [...]

Just In Time For Christmas: Snow + AT-AT = Your WTF Geek Pic Of The Day

Star Wars

Being a big Star Wars fan, I really dig it when fans make some "Real Star Wars" Photoshop Art; meaning if Star Wars was real and in our world, what would it look like?

This image to the right (click to enlarge) hit the web recently, originally over at Reddit, of an AT-AT roaming through a neighborhood dealing with a Snowpocalypse on the level of the Battle of Hoth -- quite fitting; but aside from that, it looks brilliant.

The Reddit caption for this image was, "You are walking to your car when you see this. What do you do? What. Do. You. Do?", which is not bad, but I wondered whether our readers here could do better... Can you think of a better caption? Let us know in the comments below.

Also, I'm a sucker for this kind of "Real Star Wars" Photoshop Art, so if you spot any online, be sure to let us know here at Geeks Of Doom [...]

Must Watch: Preview Trailer For Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Might Shock You

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 01:00 PM PST

Since its existence first came to be known, Clerks, Mallrats, and Dogma director Kevin Smith's turn from comedy to horror, Red State, has been a popular topic.

At first, the script for the movie was said to be so incredibly messed up that no studios wanted anything to do with it, but eventually we found out that someone was willing to take a fitting leap of faith on it, and since then Smith has been setting his cast and filing the movie.

Now comes the very first trailer...of sorts. It's really more of a preview -- one step below a teaser trailer -- but shows enough to be well worth your time. It's not an understatement to say you'll likely be shocked at how the movie looks. This is so insanely far from anything we've ever seen Kevin Smith do, you can't help but want to see more, no matter what your feelings toward his other films may be.

You can see the preview trailer for Red State now by clicking on over to the other side! [...]

Community cast as The Avengers

Artist Chris Schweizer was commissioned to draw the cast of the NBC comedy Community and decided to draw them as Marvel's Avengers.

It's a really great illustration, so if you'd like to download some wallpapers of it, visit Schweizer's site for the downloadable versions, available in several sizes.

What do you think of this drawing? Which character do you think came out the best? [...]

Darth Vader, I Wish You A Merry Sithmas

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 11:27 AM PST

By The Dude Dean

Last November 17, I saw a storm coming, and I started Save Stargate Universe on Twitter and Facebook. Last Month SyFy moved Caprica and Stargate Universe from Friday night to Tuesday night because Wrestling was more important than Sci-Fi. SyFy really didn't market this change, but I saw it for what it was. First Caprica got the axe and within one month both shows were canceled so that SyFy Channel would have more programming room for Wrestling.

In the last week the growth of Save SGU has been strong and steady. We are now over 4200 strong. But now, we've got to go to the Dark Side of the Force for some help. Two days ago, I came up with the idea to Wish @DarthVader a Merry Sithmas after seeing a tweet from him poking fun at SyFy.

As Christmas draws near, plenty of holiday-related goodies are making their way around.

Today we have for you a brief but very cool little video from the talented folks over at 39 Degrees North, a motion graphics studio from Beijing. The short is a video Christmas card adaptation of the Neil Gaiman poem, Nicholas Was..., and it mixes his dark words with equally dark yet truly beautiful animations.

You can see the video by clicking on over to the other side, and we highly recommend you do just that if you love Mr. Gaiman and fantastic animation work. [...]

Watch Now: Does Kinect Work If You Are GWAR?

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 07:51 AM PST

Gwar

It's nice to see GWAR getting some attention lately. They're getting some good coverage online, starting with the brilliant Christmas video we posted here the other day.

Following that awesome abuse of Christmas Carols, comes this video filmed by GameInformer who aimed to find out whether GWAR could successfully use the new Kinect system for Xbox 360.

Following their attempts of gaming, and the attempted rape of a Wampa (yes), GWAR tour the GI offices and nobody is free from the abuse they hurl their way. Another epic video from GWAR, let's hope we see more.

You can check out the video by clicking the image below [...]
