Geek Gear: Star Wars ‘Droid Drive In’ Shirt

Droid Drive In

It'll be just like Beggar's Canyon back home!

The t-shirt deal of the day over at RIPT Apparel is the Star Wars-inspired "Droid Drive In."

The tee, by artist Matt Wrightson, went on sale at RIPT today, Monday, January 10, 2010, at midnight CST, and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it's over, it will not be sold on the site anymore.

The t-shirt is available in men's and women's sizes in beige for $10 each. Kids sizes are $15 (Boys, Girls, and Toddler, all white); Onesies are $18 (in white). You can also get the design on a Hoodie for $38 (in white in Men/Unisex sizes).

The design features the C-3PO character from the Star Wars franchise. The golden droid is at the Beggar's Canyon drive-in, which boasts that it's "Serving all kinds" (droids have some trouble getting served, especially on Tatooine, where Beggar's Canyon is located). The droid is standing in front of a landspeeder, a popular vehicle on the sand planet, and judging by the hat he's wearing and the tray he's carrying with a burger and fries on it, it appears that C-3PO is a server at this drive-in [...]

Geek Gear: Battlestar Galactica ‘So Say We All’ T-Shirt

BSG - So Say We All shirt

The $9 t-shirt deal of the day over at Teefury today is Battlestar Galactica-inspired "So Say We Can Do Itl" shirt, by artist Bregan1989.

The sale at Teefury began at midnight EST (Monday, January 10, 2011) and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it's over, it's gone from the site for good. The design is actually a mash-up of the revamped Battlestar Galactica and the popular "Rosie The Riveter" poster, with the Starbuck character (played on the series by Katee Sackhoff) in the Rosie stance. The saying on the shirt is "So Say We All," which is the credo of BSG (the Rosie poster's motto was "We Can Do It!" so the shirt's name is a mash-up of the two sayings) [...]

It's easy to see why Hollywood loves a good superhero story. The genre has become so popular over the past couple of years, it's no wonder why everyone is in such a rush to strike while the iron is hot and cash in on the trend. While the story in a superhero movie like The Dark Knight is a great one, providing the essential themes of good versus evil and the power of one man, etc., The Cape tries to follow that same method for success.

The difference between these two is that the television series The Cape, which debut on Sunday January 9, 2011, isn't The Dark Knight. Not that it's really intending to be, but it's not even as good as other superhero television shows.

The premise for The Cape sounded like something that, on paper, should be a great execution of the genre. A cop gets framed for a crime he didn't commit! He turns over to a life of heroics to protect the ones he loves!

But that sounds familiar, doesn't it? Maybe even a little bit too familiar? [...]

Proposed ‘Wonder Woman’ TV Series Meets More Rejection

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 12:17 PM PST

This past October we were informed that after many failed attempts to turn Wonder Woman into a popular movie franchise, DC Comics would be teaming up with Warner Brothers TV and top-tier showrunner, David E. Kelley, in hopes of developing a new TV series based on the popular comic book heroine.

Sadly, for fans of the superhero who have been itching to see her in some form of modern live-action entertainment, this day will not come any time soon.

After writing a spec script for the pilot episode, Kelley and friends set off to make their pitch to the various networks. Fox turned them down, as did ABC, who are owned by Disney, the company that recently purchased Marvel for $4 billion. You can see where that might be an issue.

After that, the CW took a peek but ultimately decided it would cost way too much for them to acquire, leaving NBC and CBS. With those two, it just seemed to be a matter of poor timing -- CBS was partially interested but unable to convince all executives, while NBC is in the middle of solidifying their team. [...]

NYC Statues Get Caped For NBC’s ‘The Cape’

Gov. William H. Seward Statue dons The Cape. Madison Square Park, New York

So I'm strolling along the post-blizzard streets of New York City earlier this week when I spotted a new stand-up plaque at the foot of the William H. Seward statue at the southwest entrance of Madison Square Park. From afar I spotted the words, The Cape, which I know is new superhero drama premiering this weekend on NBC.

As I got a little closer, I realized that the statue of Seward was now newly adorned with a flowing black cape! I crossed the park to find at the other end the statue of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut was also donning a cape and had a similar plaque as well.

Check out the photos I took of the statues here below. It was an amazing sight, I'm glad I happened upon it! [...]

Torchwood: Miracle Day

The BBC has released a lot of new information concerning the upcoming fourth series of Torchwood, which has been renamed from Torchwood: The New World to the new title of Torchwood: Miracle Day. Some of the information included could be seen as spoilers, so bear this in mind if you're trying to remain spoiler-free for the new season!

Along with new cast member Mekhi Phifer who will be acting as CIA operative Rex Matheson, John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) and Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) have been joined by Bill Pullman (Independence Day) portraying protagonist Oswald Danes, Arlene Tur (Crash) portraying Dr. Vera Juarez, and Alexa Havins portraying Agent Esther Drummond.

As indicated by the character descriptions released by the BBC, the events that bring Captain Jack back to Earth and draw Gwen Cooper back into the world of Torchwood surround a mysterious event that would become known as Miracle Day -- forcing the heroes, notably Gwen, to make some very challenging and "terrible decisions" for humankind. Essentially, Miracle Day ties into a global conspiracy being scrutinized by Rex Matheson and Esther Drummond [...]
