‘Captain America’ Red Skull & Cosmic Cube Revealed?

The Red Skull concept art

There's some new concept art that has appeared on the interwebs that might just reveal the exact look of The Red Skull, along with an image of Johann Schmidt (The Red Skull pre-facial mutilation!) holding The Cosmic Cube in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The Red Skull is the big bad guy facing off against Mr. Red, White, and Blue in the upcoming feature film. This image appears to be in the same style as earlier concept art of the red headed character. In the film, Steve Rogers becomes Captain America after signing up for a secret military program to make him a super soldier to fight the Nazis. The Red Skull is Hitler's henchman in charge of advance weaponry; he has a plan for world domination involving the magical object known as the Tesseract (or The Cosmic Cube) [...]

Ian McKellen & Andy Serkis Both Officially Cast In Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 06:18 PM PST

After months of assuming that stars Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis would be returning for Peter Jackson's two-part adaptation of The Hobbit, but wondering just what was taking so long to officially lock them up, it's been finally announced that the two actors will definitely be reprising their roles.

McKellen was Academy Award nominated for his work as Gandalf in Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Serkis should have gotten an Oscar nomination for his performance capture work as Gollum -- both of which are important characters in J.R.R. Tolkien's first adventure in that world, The Hobbit. We've already heard of plenty of LOTR characters who weren't part of The Hobbit but were being used anyway, so many worried where these two all-crucial actors were and why their casting was delayed.

Now that McKellen and Serkis are confirmed, all seems to be in place for the most part. There's still casting to be done and work to complete before filming can ensue, but it looks like all systems are go for the planned February 14 start date. [...]

Get Your First Look At The New ‘Silver Surfer’!

Silver Surfer Preview 4

The Silver Surfer is one of those characters that has had trouble carrying his own series. He's a fantastic guest star in other comics but he just hasn't found enough popularity to carry a full series in a long time. J. Michael Straczynski killed the tortured ex-herald of Galactus off in a dramatic short run called Requiem and he was entertaining in the Annihilation event too. The Surfer may be one of those characters that's just best suited to short stories and guest appearances.

Marvel is Surfing With The Alien once more with a 5-issue story from New York Times bestselling author Greg Pak and artist Stephen Segovia. In this story the wielder of the power cosmic returns to Earth and will face the High Evolutionary. As always Marvel is promising a game changing epic story.

Here are some early images from the upcoming story, which begins in February with Silver Surfer #1! [...]

Will Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ Be In 3D?

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:55 PM PST

For those who are not aware, yes, Baz Luhrmann, the director behind visually stunning musicals like Moulin Rouge! and beloved story re-imaginings like Romeo + Juliet, is working on a new adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, The Great Gatsby.

The movie is currently set to star Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire with hopes for release at some point in 2012, but it was something that Luhrmann said at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that has eyebrows raising the world 'round.

Luhrmann said that though no official decision has been made, he has "workshopped" Gatsby using 3D technologies and that he might ultimately decide to create his version of the story about glitz and glam and bootlegging during post World War I Prohibition in the roaring 1920s.

The use of 3D still remains yet to be seen, of course, but it will truly be interesting to see how fans of this classic American story and purists react if Luhrmann decides to make the movie using the hit-and-miss technology. [...]

C. Thomas Howell Cast In ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

C Thomas Howell

CBM (through a link through Italian website Badtaste.it) is reporting that C. Thomas Howell has been cast in Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot.

Apparently, Howell posted to his private Facebook page, "I have just sign the deal for new Spider-Man's movie! I will start the work on January 25th [...]"

No word yet on what role he'll play or how much screen time he'll get.

I'll be honest, I had no real interest in this reboot... until now!

Yes, I said that with zero sarcasm. Howell is one of my favorite actors from the 80s (Ponyboy!), and I hope he makes a huge comeback. He most recently guest-starred on an episode of Psych from Season 5, One, Maybe Two, Ways Out [...]

Geek Art: Doctor Who – Dr Seuss Mash-Up

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:00 AM PST

Doctor Who Seuss

Artist Bill Mudron created this Doctor Who - Dr. Seuss mash-up called The Cat in the Hat Came Back (eventually).

The piece puts the Eleventh Doctor from Doctor Who (played on the series by Matt Smith) in the role of The Cat In The Hat, the title character of the popular Dr. Seuss tale. The Doctor's companions Amy and Rory are drawn as Thing 1 and Thing 2, respectively. The scene is a memorable illustration from the Dr. Seuss book, as The Doctor is balancing lots of items, some of which are from the Seuss story (the umbrella, the goldfish bowl), while others are Doctor Who-related, like the TARDIS-themed diary [...]
