One Nation Under Cinema

The t-shirt deal of the day over at RIPT Apparel is the movie-themed shirt called "One Nation Under Cinema."

The tee, by artist Scott Schneider, went on sale at RIPT today, Friday, March 4, 2011, at midnight CST, and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it's over, it will not be sold on the site anymore.

The design is of the United States with the titles of popular movies making up each State. Each movie title creates the State where the movie took place. So, for example, in my home state of New York, the actual State is created by the movie title "Ghostbusters." [...]

Blu-ray Review: Dungeons & Dragons 2-Movie Collection

Dungeons & Dragons 2-Movie Collection

Dungeons & Dragons 2-Movie Collection
Blu-ray Edition
Directed by Courtney Solomon/Gerry Lively
Starring Jeremy Irons, Marlon Wayans, Thora Birch, Mark Dymond
Warner Home Video
Release date: February 15, 2011

I guess I am the resident Dungeons & Dragons expert here at Geeks of Doom, so when the new 2-disc Blu-ray combo pack of Dungeons & Dragons and D&D: Wrath of the Dragon God came across our desk, I was the first one offered to check them out. I've never seen these movies before, but I know of them by reputation, and I was curious to see if they lived up to those reputations. All I really wanted out of them was a decent adventure movie that at least gave a tip of its hat to the popular roleplaying game. What I got was one decent adventure movie, and one really bad but really goofy adventure movie.

The first Dungeons & Dragons movie, which was originally released in 2000, stars Jeremy Irons, Marlon Wayans, and Thora Birch and follows a couple of thieves (Wayans and Justin Waylin), a mage (Zoe MClellan), a dwarf (Lee Arenberg), and an Elf (Kristen Wilson) as they search for a magical item that will control dragons and save their kingdom. There are some D&D elements thrown in, notably the dragons, a few dungeons, and some Beholders, but they didn't use a lot of the more specific items I would have liked to find in a D&D movie. They don't use any specific worlds from the game and it really feels like more of a generic fantasy world than anything specifically tied to the D&D game [...]

George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Dance With Dragons’ Gets Release Date

A Dance With Dragons

Fans of George R.R. Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire have reason to celebrate today, as an official release date has finally been set for the fifth book in the saga, A Dance with Dragons.

According to EW, July 12, 2011 will see the release of the next book in the series, whose last book, A Feast for Crows, was released more than 5 years ago. The new book is reported to be almost 900 pages in hardcover, and will focus on characters from the series who were mostly absent in the previous book. The timing for the release of the new book will be perfect (assuming Martin is finished in time) as it will be coming out just after the HBO adaptation of A Game of Thrones, the first book in the series, wraps up.

The Song of Ice and Fire started in 1996 with the release of A Game of Thrones. The series revolves around the Stark family, and their roles in political intrigue and war in a fantasy land under threat of human and supernatural forces [...]

The ‘Dune’ Movie Tie-In Activity Books

Dune activity book

After the Goodnight Dune illustrated children's book made the rounds yesterday, Meredith over at Coilhouse decided to unearth a found treasure from her collection: the Dune Activity Book series, which were released in 1984 as tie-ins to the David Lynch film Dune.

These movie tie-in activity books were filled with pages for coloring, puzzles, games, cut-outs, mazes, and more to keep children, occupied for hours. Unfortunately, a lot of the content was totally inappropriate for children! [...]

See What Hugo Weaving Looks Like As Red Skull In ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 11:57 AM PST

In the recently released trailer for Marvel's upcoming superhero movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, there was a brief tease of the evil Red Skull, being played by The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings star Hugo Weaving.

Now Entertainment Weekly has a much better look at the villain for those of you dying to see just how he looks. Red Skull is an incredibly dangerous threat and ultimate nemesis to Captain America (Chris Evans), a Nazi trained by none other than Hitler himself. He's one of the all-time best villains of comic book lore, and could go down as an all-time great movie villain if done right.

Diane Lane Set To Play Henry Cavill’s Mother In Zack Snyder’s ‘Superman’

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 08:07 AM PST

Another actor has been added to the cast of 300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder's upcoming comic book movie, currently known simply as Superman.

In a press release sent out Wednesday, it was announced that Diane Lane, who received an Academy Award nomination for her work in Unfaithful and has starred in movies like The Perfect Storm and Untraceable, had been cast in the movie.

Lane will be playing the role of Martha Kent, who acts as mother to the young boy who eventually becomes Clark Kent and of course, the Man of Steel himself, Superman.

Speaking on the announcement, Snyder said "This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination." [...]
