Marvel Teases Details Of New MMO On Twitter & Tumblr Posted: 20 Apr 2011 08:04 PM PDT Marvel is teasing details of its new MMORPG based on the Marvel Universe by setting up a protected twitter account under the guise of M.M.M. Society (@MMMSociety). The account's description reads, "The Marvel Massively Multiplayer Society is your gateway to the Marvel Universe, Marvel's upcoming epic MMO" and features a link to a password-protected Tumblr page. Comic fans have been awaiting news of a Marvel MMO ever since the company terminated its plans to create a game with City of Heroes developers Cryptic Studios, (which later morphed into Champions Online). The MMM Society is the first bit of news we've heard regarding the company's MMO since 2009, when Geeks of Doom was alerted to a job posting seeking developers for the project. But while a covert promotional campaign about a Marvel MMO may signal that we'll start to see some concrete information about what to expect from the game, it will likely be years before it launches [...] |
The Weinstein Company Suing Relativity Media Over ‘The Crow’ Remake Posted: 20 Apr 2011 04:30 PM PDT Some potentially very good news for all of you fans of the 1994 cult classic, The Crow, which has been in the news quite often lately with a remake in the works through Relativity Media. According to reports, The Weinstein Company, headed by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, have decided to file a lawsuit against Ryan Kavanaugh and Relativity, and that it's now been submitted to the court. They claim that they have contracts that are "signed by everyone" that declare their exclusive ownership of all distribution rights to The Crow from their days with Miramax. Bert Fields, who's representing the Weinsteins, says that the two parties went back and forth many times before the lawsuit was submitted. He continued, stating that "Mr. Kavanaugh was not going to honor that contract. Apparently, he's going to sell these rights to others. He made a bunch of threats. Some people may submit to that kind of arrogant conduct, but we're not going to do it. If anybody tries to buy these distribution rights in The Crow, they are buying nothing but a lawsuit and they will get sued." [...] |

UPDATED: Oscar Nominated Documentary ‘Restrepo’ Director Tim Hetherington Killed In Libya Posted: 20 Apr 2011 02:07 PM PDT It's being reported that Tim Hetherington, co-director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Restrepo, has been killed in a mortar attack while working in Libya. Hetherington was with a group of photo journalists who were all injured in the attack, including Getty Images photographer Chris Hondros, whose wounds are said to be "grave." (UPDATE: It's now been confirmed that Mr. Hondros has also passed away) Details are still coming out as they are learned. You can keep track of updates the second they come around by following someone like NPR senior strategist Andy Carvin on Twitter. Below you can see a video made by ABC News about the tragedy, as well as the trailer for Restrepo. Speaking of Twitter, Hetherington's final post to the social networking site was made on April 19th, and acts as a haunting reminder of the chaos still going on in Libya, which ultimately resulted in his death earlier today. It read "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO." [...] |
The GoD List: Comics For April 20, 2011 Posted: 20 Apr 2011 01:38 PM PDT Each week, MK2Fac3 and Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn't? So, let's take a look into the depths of their pull list, grab some issues and we'll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of April 20, 2011. Single issues and trades, they're all here. This week is kind of slow, so Henchman21 is flying solo. Deadpoolmax #7 (of 12) (Marvel/Max – $3.99) If you had told me a year ago that a Deadpool book would be one of my favorite titles, I would have said you were crazy, but David Lapham and Kyle Baker's Deadpoolmax has made me a believer. Everything that readers love about Deadpool is here, it's just cranked up. Add to it Baker's unique art style, and you get a crazy, entertaining book that I can't get enough of. X-Factor #218 (Marvel - $2.99) I was talking to someone at last year's New York Comic-Con, and they said they were looking for a socially relevant comic and didn't know if there was one, and the first book I told them about was X-Factor. Writer Peter David uses each issue to tackle a wide variety of modern subjects, while still telling fun adventure stories with a cast of characters I have come to love. If I had a complaint about the book it is that it can't hold onto a regular artist to save its life, but the series has maintained such a high story quality that I forgive it [...] |
Watch Now: Top 11 For ‘Doctor Who’ Posted: 20 Apr 2011 10:38 AM PDT BBC America is heavily promoting the upcoming launch of Doctor Who Series 6 on the web, and one of the features they've released is an ongoing YouTube set of videos focusing on "Top 11" things for Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. You can check out a few of the videos right here at the bottom of this post. The clips predominantly focus on moments from the previous season in 2010, from the Doctor first meeting young Amelia Pond, right through to some memorable moments from last year's series finale in The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang. It's a little bit of fun for fans on the web as we count down to the broadcast of opening episode The Impossible Astronaut. Check out the "Top 11" videos [...] |
‘Doctor Who’: Remembering Sarah Jane Smith Posted: 20 Apr 2011 09:08 AM PDT I have to be truthful. I was absolutely devastated when hearing the news yesterday that Elisabeth Sladen had passed away. We reported her death here at Geeks of Doom, and tributes from around the world began pouring in on the internet in memory of her. The Australian ABC invited fans to share their Sarah Jane memories on their Facebook page; and the BBC created a Sarah Jane playlist on YouTube. Fantastic artwork, such as the beautiful design above by DalekBigBoy from the Gallifrey Base forums, also began sprouting around the web-- through other avenues as well, such as Twitter and social news sites. I can't help but reflect more on Elisabeth Sladen -- since it's important, in my view, to highlight (especially to newer fans), that she was more than just a companion to us oldies and dinosaurs. She was a defining person during our early years, so her death is felt so much closer to the heart for us [...] |
Guitarist K.K. Downing Retires From Metal Band Judas Priest Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:48 AM PDT Back in December, legendary British heavy metal band Judas Priest announced their plans for a Farewell Tour, called The Farewell EPITAPH World Tour, which would lead to their retirement. The tour would take the band on the road through 2011 and into part of 2012. Since that announcement, it seemed that the Metal Gods weren't totally calling it quits, with the news of a new album in the future. Today comes word from the Priest camp that guitarist K.K. Downing has formally retired from the band and will not be joining them on the upcoming EPITAPH world tour. It is with regret that Judas Priest announce that K.K. DOWNING has formally retired from the band and will therefore not be joining them on their forthcoming EPITAPH Tour [...] |
