Kevin Costner Continues Comeback With Villainous Role In Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ Posted: 18 Jul 2011 08:25 PM PDT Kevin Costner has been the butt of many jokes over the years before the actor seemed to disappear for while to focus on other things, including his efforts to try and help clean up after the Gulf Coast oil spill a couple of years ago. Apart from a two–year absence from 2003 to 2005, he has continued to act, but keeping it to a movie per year or so and keeping himself out of the spotlight for the most part. Now it appears he wants to make something of a comeback with some very intriguing supporting roles. We first found out Costner was going to play the man that will raise Superman, Jonathan Kent, in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. Now comes word that Costner has joined the cast of Quentin Tarantino's upcoming western, Django Unchained. Costner will play a villain in the movie, a man who trains the slaves to fight so they can battle to the death for the amusement of slavemaster Leonardo DiCaprio. [...] |
Book Review: Joe Simon: My Life in Comics Posted: 18 Jul 2011 07:09 PM PDT Joe Simon: My Life in Comics The Illustrated Autobiography of Joe Simon Written by Joe Simon Hardcover Titan Books Release date: June 21, 2011 I am a big fan of books that cover comic book history, particularly the golden age of comics. Joe Simon: My Life in Comics takes a look at that period through the eyes of the man who helped create Captain America, and I was looking forward to reading it. My Life in Comics turned out to be almost everything I had hoped for, but came up a little short. There are a lot of good anecdotes to be found in this book, I just wish certain events in Joe Simon's life had been looked at a little longer. Joe Simon is perhaps most famous for joining with Jack Kirby to create the Captain America character in 1941, but he was responsible for much more than that. Before there was Jack and Stan Lee, there was Simon and Kirby, creating thousands of pages worth of entertainment and hundreds of characters that live on to this day. My Life in Comics looks at Simon's life, from his childhood days, through his prolific career, into his twilight years. Simon tells the story of how he and Kirby jumped from publisher to publisher as different ideas were created. The autobiography spends most of its time dealing with the partnership and friendship between Simon and Kirby [...] |
DC Relaunch: ‘DC Comics: The New 52′ Hardcover Collection Coming In December Posted: 18 Jul 2011 05:01 PM PDT File this one under "You've gotta be freaking kidding me." DC Comics announced today that all of their #1 September releases will be collected in a massive 1,216-page hardcover called DC Comics: The New 52 to be released on December 7, 2011. Yeah, I know. I seriously cannot believe this. I mean, I want it, but still. This definitely falls on the side of being ridiculous. Sure, the relaunch is unprecedented, and absolutely there will be collectors out there who will be more than willing to shell out the insanely priced $150, but come on. Unless there is some sort of weaving plot thread to go between these books, what's the real point in buying this? Would it ever be read? [...] |

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:08 PM PDT On Monday, DC Comics announced the all-new origin and costume for The Man of Steel. Get ready folks, because we're in store for an angry comments section. Why? Just wait and see. Action Comics #1 (cover shown below) will be written by my favorite writer Grant Morrison with art duties from Rags Morales, artist of the amazingly popular Identity Crisis. And in the hands of anyone else, I'd be worried, but I suspect plenty of you will still be worried, if not furious. So, let's get to it [...] |
Watch Now: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Teaser Trailer Posted: 18 Jul 2011 01:44 PM PDT After a week of bootlegs and crowded Harry Potter screenings, the official teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises finally hits the Internet in a legitimate way. Watch it here below. The teaser trailer is just that, a tease. For those who haven't analyzed this trailer, let me pick up the slack. In the teaser, we are primarily shown previously seen footage mainly from Batman Begins, the first in Nolan's Batman trilogy. One can only assume that this is done to hammer home the finality of The Dark Knight Rises. Then we surprisingly get some new footage [...] |

Watch Now: New ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Trailers & TV Spots Posted: 18 Jul 2011 08:24 AM PDT 20th Century Fox is starting to ramp up the promotional campaign for Rise of the Planet of the Apes as the movie's August 5 release date fast approaches. Just recently the studio released a pair of television spots and new domestic and international trailers. If you've seen any of the previously released trailers, you won't find much new in these videos. The international trailer probably contains some extra shots, but I've seen it all before. You can watch the new videos and trailers here below. Still, I love the look of the film so far. The CGI motion-capture on the apes looks amazing to the point where even in their brief appearances you feel a great deal of sympathy for them, especially in the lead performance by Andy Serkis as Caesar. But with the exception of John Lithgow, the human actors don't fare as well in these trailers. I hope it's just a case of the promo materials holding back [...] |
