SDCC 2011: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Panel, Footage Description & Video Of Andrew Garfield Surprise

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 03:15 AM PDT

Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

SDCC 2011: The Amazing Spider-Man panel: Emma Stone

Unfortunately for The Amazing Spider–Man, their trailer leaked a tad early, leading Columbia Pictures to just release it for all to see (unfortunately for them, maybe, but good for those of us excited about the movie!). Surely if the trailer hadn't have leaked they could have wowed everyone at Comic–Con with it before releasing it, but they still were sure to bring a little something extra to show off.

The panel kicked off with said trailer, this time in 3D to add a little bit new to the mix, before someone dressed in a low–budget Spider–Man costume came up to the microphone going on about how excited they were to be there. After a bit, the person removes their mask to reveal that it's the new Spidey himself, Andrew Garfield, who then talks about how much the superhero means to him and how much it changed his life growing up.

Garfield then introduced the rest of the panel—his co–star and female lead, Emma Stone, co–star Rhys Ifans, director Marc Webb, and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach—before removing the costume and joining them. [...]

SDCC 2011: ‘Total Recall’ Panel & Footage Description

Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

SDCC 2011: Total Recall panel: Jessica Biel

The Total Recall remake is still over a year away, but the cast and crew were on hand in hopes of building a solid buzz for the movie early. Director Len Wiseman comes out, joined by stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston, Jessical Biel, and John Cho.

Wiseman says they're only halfway through filming (and probably shouldn't be showing anything off yet), but they're going to show off something anyway. Hooray for pleasing the masses!

Continue reading for more from the panel and descriptions of the footage shown.

A portion of the footage shown was just animated storyboards, and a lot of shots were without the visual effects completed, but nevertheless, you can still get a good feel of where they're going with the movie.

The footage begins with Farrell as Douglas Quaid talking to someone, asking them if they're happy with the way that their life turned out. He then asks about a place called Recall, with a response warning him to avoid it. [...]

Cast members from Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood shared their thoughts on the new installment of the series Miracle Day currently airing on BBC and Starz during a panel discussion Friday at the San Diego Comic-Con.

He also said not to expect an explanation of where Jack went at the end of Children of Earth (the last Torchwood installment).

"Make up what you want," Barrowman said. "I just think Jack had a great time with Alonso." [...]

SDDC 2011: Photos From The Convention Floor, Preview Night

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 11:43 PM PDT

We GoDs took to the convention floor on Wednesday night at Comic-Con International 2011 here in San Diego, CA, for Preview night to check out the sights. Sadly, there weren't too many cosplayers in attendance at the time, but there were a lot of cool signings and giveaways going on at every turn.

We ransacked the WB booth and came away with a haul of cool Harry Potter buttons; hit AMC's Walking Dead booth and watched some brave convention goers willingly handcuff themselves to an Atlanta 'rooftop' alongside an eerily lifelike Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) statue; and stopped by the IDW booth to score a Comic-Con exclusive Locke & Key replica 'Head' key for our very own Henchman21 (who's presence at here SDCC this year is sorely missed). We did stop by the Summit Entertainment booth, where each year we've been able to score some Twilight goodies for our readers, but just as we got to the line, they closed it down [...]

SDCC 2011: ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ Panel

SDCC 2011: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance panel: Nicolas Cage

By Andrew Sorcini

It's no secret that in the last few years Nicolas Cage's career has taken a turn for the bizarre and outrageous, with films like Bangkok Dangerous, Bad Lieutenant, and Drive Angry. And likewise, directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have been pushing the envelope for years with gonzo films like Crank and Gamer. So what sort of batshit insane movie could possibly come from the collaboration of these two unpredictable forces? San Diego Comic-Con audiences got a peek today with a preview of Neveldine/Taylor's Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, a sequel to the 2007 original.

The panel began with a montage showing off the gonzo shooting style of Neveldine/Taylor as they operated their cameras right alongside the stuntmen, rollerblading along with speeding cars, and hanging off swinging rigs. In fact, they proudly proclaimed they wouldn't ask the stuntmen to do anything they wouldn't do themselves, and vow that if any stuntmen are injured during shooting, they promise those takes would be in the film [...]

SDCC 2011 Video: ‘Game of Thrones’ Producers Reveal Details About Season 2, Future Seasons

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 09:51 PM PDT

George R. R. Martin at Comic-Con 2011

Game of Thrones executive producers/writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss discussed how long it would take to adapt future books in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series to television during a panel discussion today at the San Diego Comic-Con 2011.

While the first season was able to adapt the entirety of the first book, that formula may have to change.

"If we're lucky enough, if we have a season three, that's when it won't start corresponding so deeply to the books," Benioff said. "Storm of Swords [the third book in the series] is just too big to do as one season. We don't know yet whether it'll be one and a half seasons, maybe it's three seasons." [...]

Week of Geek: Captain America: The First Avenger

If you have read Captain America comics since you were a wee lad like me, then you are probably excited about Marvel's newest blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger.

I for one can hardly wait to see the Star Spangled Avenger appear on the silver screen for the first time, mixing it up with his arch enemies Hydra and the Red Skull. While these villains are certainly not to be underestimated, there are quite a few Cap villains that are. We at Geeks of Doom believe that every dog deserves his day so we are proud to present Top 5 Underrated Captain America Villains.

These villains might be underrated for a reason, but someone out there digs them. Continue reading to see who makes the list!

Flag Smasher
Don't feel bad for Karl Morgenthau. Sure, he is number five on the list but he has so much going for him. He was the son of a Swiss Diplomat, his choice of weaponry includes a spiked mace and a shield, and he was one of the few Captain America foes to give him a run for his money. [...]

SDCC 2011: Jim Steranko’s ‘Red Tide’ To Be Reissued

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 08:01 PM PDT

Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

During the Dark Horse Presents panel today at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 an icon of the world of comics rose from the audience and took the stage to announced that one of his classic graphic novels will be reissued by Dark Horse Comics.

Red Tide was originally published in 1976 and was Steranko's attempt at bringing true suspense to the world of comics. Steranko explained: "I realized pretty early on that there was this intensity in film that I never got anywhere else. I had this idea that there is a way to make this form {comics} more suspenseful. That's one of the reasons I did Red Tide." He further explained how he took this story outside the normal paneled, word ballooned, and captioned formula of comics and tried to utilize some of what makes regular novels successful at building intensity and suspense with words. He showed in a presentation how he broke his pages into thirds with two images and text [...]

‘Beavis and Butt–Head’ Return To Slam ‘Twilight,’ ‘Jersey Shore’ & More; Near 5–Minute Video Preview Released!

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 05:43 PM PDT

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, Beavis and Butt–Head are back, and they may just be better than ever before. A panel was held at the 2011 San Diego Comic–Con for the return of the MTV series, which was moderated by Jackass star Johnny Knoxville and featured creator Mike Judge.

Attendees of the panel were treated to some clips from the show's return, which will premiere this fall. The first clip showed the duo deciding that they needed to become vampires and werewolves in order to score some chicks after they saw Twilight. Also shown were bits from an episode called "Holy Cornholio," which shouldn't need much description for fans of the show to know exactly what to expect in said episode.

Now you can see almost five minutes worth of clips from the Cornholio episode courtesy of MTV by clicking on over to the other side now! [...]

SDCC 2011: ‘Fright Night’ Panel

By Andrew Sorcini

SDCC 2011: Fright Night panel: Colin Farrell

The Fright Night panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 included director Craig Gillespie, writer Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and actors Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and last (but not least) as moderator, Chris Sarandon (from the original Fright Night).

Craig Gillespie was drawn to direct the remake because of how well the original was written. Writer Noxon was also drawn to updating the vampire genre for a modern audience.

Then they played a clip in which Mintz-Plasse's character, Evil Ed, compares villain Jerry Dandridge (Farrell) to "the shark from Jaws," a non-stop eating machine.

Farrell was reluctant to play Dandridge because he felt intimidated by Sarandon's incredible performance in the original film. He was pleased by the fact that Noxon had updated the characters enough to make them their own [...]

SDCC 2011: Andrew Niccol’s ‘In Time’ Panel; Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried Show Time Is Literally Money

SDCC 2011: In Time panel: Damon Lindelof with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried

Almost a year ago, we were beginning to hear about a new science fiction thriller called I'm.mortal, which was putting together a cast that included Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Cillian Murphy. The movie certainly sounded interesting, and thanks to this year's San Diego Comic–Con, we now know it looks pretty darn interesting, as well!

The movie, whose title has since been changed to In Time, is set in a future where we've perfected everlasting life and everyone stops aging at the age of 25, but in order to protect from overpopulation, time is now used in lieu of money as a currency. This leaves the rich to live as long as they'd like, and the less–fortunate fighting to keep living. Everyone is genetically engineered to die one year after turning 25, so if you're unable to replenish your time, you will not last long.

Keep reading for more and to see some images from the panel! [...]

SDCC 2011: Edgar Wright Talks Cornetto Trilogy

Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

Edgar Wright was on hand to promote the new alien indie horror Attack the Block today at San Diego Comic-Con 2011.

During the panel's audience Q&A, a fan asked Wright for an update on his Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, also known as Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, which consists of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and a planned third film, The World's End. The first two films star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in the lead roles (but as different characters), and the trio will work together on the final movie too. Whenever Wright does an interview or panel, the question of the third movie inevitably comes up [...]

SDCC 2011: First Trailer From ‘The Raven’ Debuts

SDCC 2011: The Raven panel: John Cusack

James McTeigue, director of The Raven, made an appearance at the Relativity Media panel today at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 to debut the trailer for the upcoming thriller. Also on the panel were stars John Cusack, Alice Eve, and Luke Evans. They all talked about filming the movie in Serbia during winter and also about their research regarding Poe's life and his stories. Alice Eve talked about getting mouthfuls of dirt while filming her "buried alive" scenes.

The film revolves around the last five days of author Edgar Allan Poe's life in the mid-1800s in Baltimore. In real life, little is known about those days, so the filmmakers took the liberty of turning that time into a murder-mystery based on Poe's actual stories. In The Raven, Poe (played by John Cusack) must team up with a young inspector detective (Luke Evans) to find a serial killer who's murdering his victims based on events from Poe's macabre tales.

SDCC 2011: Steven Spielberg & Peter Jackson Wow Fans At ‘The Adventures of Tintin’

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 12:43 PM PDT

SDCC 2011: Tin Tin panel: Steven SpielbergBy Andrew Sorcini

The The Adventures of Tintin panel began with something very special for the Comic-Con audience today in San Diego: a retrospective of Steven Spielberg's career, and the presentation of Comic-Con's Inkpot lifetime achievement award to the respected filmmaker himself, which he receieved to a standing ovation.

Spielberg discussed how even before he knew about Tintin, his films had been compared to Herge's work for years. When preparing to develop the film, he approached Weta to ask them to show him a test of Tintin's dog Snowball, to see if CGI would be a proper medium. He then showed that presumed test, which featured producer Peter Jackson as Capt. Haddock, with a CGI Snowy behind him, performing tricks and getting drunk from Haddock's whiskey.
