Calling for tech support? IBM’s Watson might be on the other end Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:52 AM PDT Watson may have Jeopardy! and the medical realm under lock, but retail / service industries? Not yet, but soon. Very soon. According to a new piece in Hemispheres Magazine, IBM’s now looking to shop the supercomputer’s world-class vocal recognition technologies to outfits in retail and customer service, with those enterprises in particular drooling at the thought of having a sophisticated machine recognizing human speech. In theory, at least, basic questions could potentially be answered entirely by Watson, but that’s honestly not a future we’re too fond of. There’s also the possibility of using analytical data that Watson collects in order to better position deals, service and other tech support centers based on what kinds of requests come in the most. So, eager to speak with a kindhearted, potentially confused robot? Or will that flustered, potentially sympathetic Earthling still suffice? Calling for tech support? Tajikistan Watched the Lunar Eclipse in All Its Glory [Video] Posted: 11 Jul 2011 06:52 AM PDT Last month’s lunar eclipse was truly a sight to behold. Unfortunately, most people couldn’t see it without some help. But if you, like Jean-Luc Dauvergne, happened to be in the Pamir region of Tajikistan, you sat in the world’s front-row seat. Self-Cleaning Shower Uses Nano-Coatings to Destroy Dirt Posted: 11 Jul 2011 04:52 AM PDT I have always thought that showers were self-cleaning. They are, after all, splashed liberally with water on a daily basis. When I mentioned this to the Lady, though, she pointed out that things in the bathroom do actually have to be cleaned by humans. Who knew? Phil Schiller. Kicking @$$. On Autotune. [Fun video] Posted: 11 Jul 2011 02:52 AM PDT Ever wished you could hear Apple SVP, Phil Schiller on the WWDC 2011 stage, quoting All Things Digital‘s John Paczkowski saying “the Mac is kicking @$$”… run through autotune? Us neither. Then we watched it. Check out the video after the break. GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X Posted: 11 Jul 2011 12:52 AM PDT GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.” The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux. The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes. Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren’t actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros — it’s the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you’re feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source. Posted: 10 Jul 2011 08:52 PM PDT Just because the space shuttle Atlantis is on its final mission, that doesn’t mean NASA’s run out of cool experiments. Its latest example? A shiny silver bag — consciously inspired by the “stillsuits” from Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, Dune – that turns astronaut urine into potable drinking water. It’s been done, you say? Sure, but the earlier tech relied on electricity: a precious commodity aboard the International Space Station. The Forward Osmosis Bag requires no outside power source, relying on, you guessed it, forward osmosis to produce clean, filtered water. Not only that, but the resulting water mixes with a sugary solution to make a electrolyte-rich sports drink. On Earth this process takes four to six hours, but Atlantis astronauts will test its viability in space near the end of their mission. For an extensive on-planet demonstration, see the video after the break.
