The TouchPad 4G Is Faster in Every Way [Tablets] Posted: 12 Jul 2011 03:52 PM PDT The TouchPad 4G is just like the TouchPad I wanted to love so badly—but it’s got a faster 1.5GHz processor and it’s on AT&T’s sorta-4G network (with GPS powers too). More »

FOSS and the Freeloader Factor Posted: 12 Jul 2011 11:52 AM PDT It was almost exactly two years ago that Linux bloggers were bemoaning organizational FOSS users’ tendency not to give back to the community, and now here we are again, facing the same fact. Spurred once again by a discussion originating in the Eclipse community, bloggers have been wrestling not just with the reality of inconsistent enterprise-user contributions to FOSS, but also whether it really matters. Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:52 AM PDT It’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android. Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however. Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space. The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look. Words With Friends for Android updated, promises “smoother game experience” Posted: 12 Jul 2011 07:52 AM PDT As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience… and that’s being rather charitable. You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up. Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What’s nice is that it doesn’t lose your saved games – this screenshot shows a game I’ve started before the update and continued after updating. How’s the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments! Words With Friends for Android updated, promises “smoother game experience” originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:00:00 EST. OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:52 AM PDT I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I’m all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene. OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version). I’m of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it’s beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background? OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing — in case something like WriteMonkey’s dark background is just too oppressive for you. After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter’s features and creative soundscapes. Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers Posted: 12 Jul 2011 12:52 AM PDT HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example. We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years. Clickfree trots out C6 Easy Imaging backup hard drives, takes ‘em to 2TB Posted: 11 Jul 2011 10:52 PM PDT Your favorite no-touch backup company’s coming back around again, this time with yet another HDD to tempt your paranoia. Clickfree‘s newest backup solution is the C6 Easy Imaging, capable of holding backups for as many PCs as necessary (provided there’s enough space). It’ll work seamlessly with Windows 7, Vista and XP, and it’ll get all the juice it needs from a spare USB port. As with the outfit’s prior products, this one’s also designed for those who aren’t exactly “hip” with technical lingo, which means that power users will likely be flustered with the inability to really control too much of what’s happening just as soon as this thing’s plugged in. That said, the drive does allow users to categorize which files they want backed up, and it’ll enable users to restore only personal files should the need arise. The full spiel is hosted up after the break, and you can catch the portable version right now in the US and Canada for $140 (500GB) / $180 (1TB), while the desktop model goes for $150 (1TB) / $180 (2TB). Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video) Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:52 PM PDT Corel seems to be on a roll lately; after releasing WinZip System Utilities just last week, this morning the company announced VideoStudio Pro X4. VideoStudio Pro is aimed at home users and small business professionals who want to create professional-looking videos, but without the hassle, steep learning curve and price of Adobe Premiere Pro and the likes. This new version introduces several features:
I’ve had a chance to play around with a pre-release version for a few days, and have put it through its paces editing a short video for my day job. Overall, I’ve been impressed with how easy it was to create pro-looking results. If you do any sort of video editing but are leery of the investment other apps require (both in dollars and effort), VideoStudio Pro is well worth checking out. To see a bit of the interface itself and what the app can do, watch the video after the jump. Note: We’ll be running a give-away of ten VideoStudio Pro X4 licenses later today, each worth $100 USD. Keep your eyes peeled for the giveaway post!
