I Hurricane NY

I Hurricane NY

We here at the main GoD headquarters in the New York City "Zone C" area are bracing for Hurricane Irene, which is set to hit tomorrow (Sunday) morning. As we get ready to shut down for the night, the seriously heavy rains and winds have already begun, so if things are quiet here at GeeksofDoom.com tomorrow, chances are either the power/internet went out and/or we're busy bailing water.

In the meantime, here's some gems I learned from the stellar local round-the-clock news coverage of Hurricane Irene:

-- Sheepshead Bay is a bay, that's how it got it's name.
-- Do not try to stand outside in the hurricane, even though you see the news reporters doing it [they are immune to the affects of harsh weather!].
-- Hurricanes are bad.
-- The surf is getting frothier and frothier.
-- Water is wet.
-- We're screwed. [...]

Check Out This David Bowie-Inspired Children’s Book ‘Space Oddity’

Space Oddity - Andrew Kolb

Artist Andrew Kolb as created an illustrated children's book based on the David Bowie song "Space Oddity."

Kolb took the lyrics to the Bowie song, and added his own awesome illustrations to it.

Have you ever listened to a song and your mind's eye is immediately filled with visuals?

David Bowie's classic space epic is one such song for me. Every lyric paints such a vivid picture that I figured "Oh hey, I guess I'll make that into a children's book!" Yes, I talk like this.

New ‘RAGE’ Gameplay Trailer ‘Gearhead Vault’ Released By Bethesda

RAGE Gearhead Vault

A brand new gameplay trailer for the upcoming new title from developer id Software, creators of Doom and Quake, and publisher Bethesda Softworks, RAGE, has been released online.

The trailer, titled "Gearhead Vault," shows off a quest where the player has to infiltrate a bank and find a vault containing a combination of plutonium and feltrite, which, in this devastated post apocalyptic land, would be incredibly useful as a power source. In order to pull the mission off, the player will have to deal with one of the game's many gangs, the Gearheads, who do not make it easy for you.

This is yet another impressive video to go along with the six that were recently released and anything else we've seen of RAGE, which hits stores on October 4th.

Check out the new trailer below now. [...]

‘Source Code’ Writer Hired For ‘Flatliners’ Remake

Flatliners

Sony has signed Ben Ripley, who wrote the screenplay for the Duncan Jones mind-bender Source Code, to pen a remake of the 1990 film Flatliners, which starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, and William Baldwin.

The original Joel Schumacher film centered on a group of medical students conducting near-death experiments.

Laurence Mark will produce the new film, which Deadline reports will be "a contemporary reimagining." Right, remake, exactly, except let me guess: the group uses the Internet -- better yet, Facebook! -- to conduct the experiments! [...]

Movie Review: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

Don't Be Afraid the Dark

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark
Directed by Troy Nixey
Starring Bailee Madison, Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce
Release date: August 26, 2011

When it comes to remakes, horror movies seem like the most popular option. It's far rarer, however, that the film was a made-for-TV special, but such is the case for the new Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

The film opens in the late 19th century at Blackwood Manor, a large mansion set in a remote woodsy area. A housekeeper is called into the basement by Mr. Blackwood only to be trapped and have her teeth bashed out with a chisel. An apologetic Blackwood, who is missing teeth himself, collects her shattered teeth and places them in a bloody dish. He places the dish inside a nearby fireplace, all the while begging to have his son back. Whispers respond, and Blackwood is painfully pulled into the fireplace.

Jumping forward to the modern day, architect Alex Hirst (Guy Pearce) and his interior decorator girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) are in the middle of an extensive renovation of Blackwood Manor. Things become complicated when Alex's daughter Sally (Bailee Madison) arrives, having been sent by her mother to live with Alex. Sally quickly discovers the now barricaded basement and fireplace, and soon the whispers start again. Revealing more of the plot might ruin the scares for some people, but needless to say something scary calls Blackwood Manor home [...]
