AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool Posted: 04 Aug 2011 05:52 PM PDT A while back, we told you about AVG’s new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG’s odd choice of monikers — LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud. LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it’s lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG’s strong presence on Android we wouldn’t be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future. The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can’t even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out. If you’re not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account. Capture for iPhone Puts Johnny a Little Closer to the Spot Posted: 04 Aug 2011 01:52 PM PDT Depending on how often you find yourself in bizarre, hilarious or thrilling situations, many events in life deserve to be caught on video. But the unexpected moments tend to pass right by, undocumented, simply because it’s usually pretty cumbersome to whip out a video cam and get it going in time. Motorola Photon: Many Glowing Reviews, a Few Dark Glares Posted: 04 Aug 2011 11:52 AM PDT Motorola’s latest high-end Android smartphone, the Photon, has hit the shelves at Sprint stores for $200 and a two-year contract. Online customers had a head start — the Photon was available at Sprint’s website days ahead of its brick-and-mortar arrival. The Photon runs on Android 2.3 — Gingerbread — and works on both 3G and 4G networks. Time Inc. aims to please advertisers and your eyes, making all mags tablet-friendly by year’s end Posted: 04 Aug 2011 09:52 AM PDT Do you love reading Time magazine on your tablet, but wish you had the same luxury with all of its related offerings? Oh boy, do we have fantastic news for you. As it stands, select Time Inc. publications are supported on the iPad, Android Marketplace, TouchPad, and Next Issue Media’s store, but now the company has announced plans to make all 21 of its mags available on tablets by the year’s end. Furthermore, support for the Nook Color will be added by the end of August with digital versions of Time, Sports Illustrated, People, and Fortune. Current subscribers to the print editions won’t be left out either when it all rolls out, as they’ll be able to opt-in for free upgrades with digital access. The decision is apparently tied to increasing “digital reach” for advertisers, but hey, ad-support isn’t totally lame. Right? Full PR just past the break. Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game Posted: 04 Aug 2011 07:52 AM PDT Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is “above” the windows. It doesn’t push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything. Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid – and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around. Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It’s a very tricky game – one I wouldn’t recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad. Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.
