Give a single Android ROM the Boot (Manager) Posted: 11 Aug 2011 01:52 PM PDT Install up to four ROMs on your SD card and keep one on your phone as well. Boot up to 5 ROMs and switch between them with just a reboot. Official support is limited to mostly HTC devices. Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster Posted: 11 Aug 2011 11:52 AM PDT One click; just one single well-aimed click. That’s all you get in Boomshine. That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles. It’s been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic – it sounds like drums). At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn’t get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don’t get points for trying. There’s no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I’ve found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues. What level did you reach? Screenshots please! Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only Posted: 11 Aug 2011 09:52 AM PDT It’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android. Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however. Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space. The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look. LG, Sony drop patent infringement lawsuits, strike cross-licensing agreement Posted: 11 Aug 2011 07:52 AM PDT The testy patent battle between LG and Sony has finally come to an end, now that the companies have decided to lay down their arms and call a truce. In a statement issued today, an LG spokeswoman declared that the two parties have “agreed to drop patent infringement lawsuits against each other,” adding that they’ve struck a cross-licensing deal on the TVs, smartphones and other gadgets in question. A Sony representative confirmed this, but did not offer further details. The spat began back in December, when Sony filed a complaint with the ITC over a handful of allegedly patent infringing LG mobile devices. The Korean manufacturer later struck back with an ITC complaint of its own, targeting Sony products like the Bravia and PlayStation 3. Now, however, the two have apparently learned how to play nice, though details on their settlement remain scarce. As soon as we have them, we’ll pass them along. A Visit from the Ghost of Linux Future Posted: 11 Aug 2011 05:52 AM PDT Industry pundits may typically favor the start of a new year for making long-term predictions, but here in the Linux blogosphere — where the dog days of summer have us effectively trapped in a small set of heavily air-conditioned bars and saloons — we like August. When else, after all, are the hours so plentiful or the tempers so hot? HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser Posted: 10 Aug 2011 10:52 PM PDT While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it’s still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources — like MP3 and OGG files. Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string — results load as you type. There’s a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool. Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It’s also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up. This new round is in addition to earlier investments from Y Combinator and StartFund (in fact, both SV Angel and Yuri Milner, who make up StartFund, have made additional investments). Samsung Galaxy R officially announced for Europe and Asia, nobody surprised Posted: 10 Aug 2011 05:52 PM PDT That Samsung Galaxy R we’ve heard about? Yep, it’s real. Not that it’s much of a surprise to us, considering we’ve seen leaked press renders and even a four-minute video about the device, but Samsung and NVIDIA have finally banded together to give the “mystery phone” its official blessing. Here’s the skinny: the Galaxy R will house a 1GHz Tegra 2 CPU, a 4.2-inch WVGA (800 x 480) Super Clear LCD, dual 5MP / 2MP cameras in the rear and front (respectively), and Gingerbread with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. The phone’s already available in Sweden as the Galaxy Z, but it’s finally on its way to parts of Europe and Asia (including China). No word on if or when we can plan on seeing the R in North America, but it’s likely that its launch would be quickly obscured by its older brother, the Galaxy S II, if it made an appearance. A full press release and demo video can be found after the break for your enjoyment.
