Amidst Loss Of 1 Million Customers, Netflix Offers Explanation; Announces Video Games, Qwikster

Qwikster

To say people were angry when Netflix announced even more price increases in July would be an outrageous understatement, to say the least.

But instead of people just complaining and moving on like we so often tend to do, the negative reaction was matched by significant losses. Netflix shares have dropped nearly 20% so far, and the company's previous estimation of around 25 million subscribers by the end of the third quarter has now been lowered to 24 million, meaning at least a million people have already decided to bail on the service.

Instead of just leaving things be and see how they turn out, Netflix is making some more big changes (though none to prices, no worries).

Company co–founder and CEO, Reed Hastings, wrote a lengthy blog post Sunday doing something he should have done a long time ago: explain exactly why they decided to increase prices. He also revealed plans to integrate video games into their rental options, and Qwikster, the new name of their DVD service. [...]

This Day In KISStory: The Unmasking Of KISS, 28 Years On

KISS

28 years ago on this day in KISStory, a bewildering moment arrived for rock and metal fans that for many seemed to have come out of nowhere. KISS had announced they were unmasking, dropping the make-up, costumes, and personae they had previously "worn" for ten years, and moving forward as an "unmasked" band.

The band officially unmasked on MTV (see video below), and the announcement sent shockwaves through the metalhead communities at the time, which was the beginning that this decision was a good move by the band. Up until this stage, KISS enjoyed the height of their career in the 1970s, and as they journeyed into the earlier 1980s, things were beginning to look somewhat dire for the band [...]

Foo Fighters Respond To Westboro Baptist Church Protests By Playing Show For Picketers

Foo Fighters in Kansas City

On Friday night, the Foo Fighters played a show at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and on hand to show their own special brand of support were members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, who brought out their trusty signs and hate-filled chants to express their umbrage at any person, group, or organization that doesn't share their black-hearted hostility towards homosexuals. In their own puckish manner, the Foos decided to show their appreciation for the Westboro group's venom by putting on a special concert just for them. They filmed the performance and their preparation and you can watch the video of it all here below [...]

Spoiler Talk: Drive

Drive 01

Emma Stone.
Rose Byrne.
The talent black-hole that is Channing Tatum.
Natalie Portman.

When this year is over and done with, you'll realize that every single movie released in 2011 headlined one of these actors, though, like you, I have yet to see Channing Tatum, actually "act" in a movie. With the exception of Tatum, seeing these stars over and over isn't necessarily a bad thing as the projects they've appeared in have been good overall (sorry, Your Highness), and after October's Ides of March, you can add Ryan Gosling to the Honorary Samuel L. Jacksons.

But before you can see Gosling and George Clooney compare abs in Ides, Gosling opens in this week's 70ish thriller Drive. As befitting a person on the shortlist for Best Actor of His Generation, Gosling's character in Drive is nothing like his reformed player in Crazy, Stupid Love or his possible cross-dressing murderer in last year's excellent All Good Things. In fact, Gosling is THE reason to take the Drive, as he's the best thing about the film, a deliberately paced (read: slow at times) throwback to 70's noir thrillers when mood and character (read: lingering close ups) meant more than cheap gratification [...]
