DC Relaunch: New DC Comics (Final Week) Posted: 27 Sep 2011 08:53 PM PDT As most of you may know by now, DC Comics is relaunching their entire line of comics this Fall alongside a day and date digital comics initiative. What you might not know, however, is that it all started three weeks ago with the releases of the last issue of DC's summer event Flashpoint, and the beginning of the new universe with Justice League #1. This Wednesday is the last big week of releases and I'm picking up a lot of these book, and there are still a lot of books to look forward to in these upcoming weeks, as well as plenty that you and I will probably want to stay away from for varying reasons. So, in the order of kindness and assignments from my editor, I will be breaking down each title with their creators, what they're about, and what you can expect from each of the new books. And, guess what? I'm not in love with a lot of the decisions that they've made! So, this should be fun... |
Lionsgate Options Rights To Make ‘Dead Island’ Movie Posted: 27 Sep 2011 08:12 PM PDT Back in February it was announced that the new video game title from Techland and Deep Silver, Dead Island, would be turned into a movie before the game itself even hit store shelves. The news was later denied by Deep Silver, who said that many parties were interested in turning it into a movie, but no deals had been struck yet. One thing was for sure, however, and that is that the buzz was clearly not coming from the game itself (no gameplay footage had been released at that point) but from an incredible cinematic trailer that had been released a few days earlier and took the world by storm. As it turns out, the man who was first reported to have acquired the rights to make a Dead Island movie, Sean Daniels and his Sean Daniel Company, is involved in the project along with Stefan Sonnefeld. But its Lionsgate who has stepped in to option the rights to develop the movie, putting all the pieces into place to get this bad boy moving forward. [...] |

DVD Review: Carlos (Criterion Collection) Posted: 27 Sep 2011 04:07 PM PDT Carlos Blu-ray | DVD Directed by Olivier Assayas Written by Olivier Assayas and Dan Franck Starring Edgar Ramirez, Alexander Scheer The Criterion Collection Release Date: September 27, 2011 THE FILM:: Some stories have to be told in a longer time period than most films are allotted. Criminal Charges Threatened On College Professor For ‘Firefly’ Poster Posted: 27 Sep 2011 02:56 PM PDT A University of Wisconsin–Stout theater professor, James Miller, has come under fire after putting up a poster for the Joss Whedon sci–fi western cult classic, Firefly, on his office door. The poster (seen here) included one of Captain Malcolm Reynolds' (Nathan Fillion) many classic quotes: "You don't know me, son, so let me explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake. You'll be facing me. And you'll be armed." But apparently there's a lot of very stupid people involved with monitoring the happenings of The University of Wisconsin–Stout, because campus police saw the poster, blindly only saw the words "kill you," and removed it because clearly some kid was going to wander by, see it, and kill someone. Chief of Police Lisa A. Walter e–mailed Miller, informing him that they had removed the poster and that "it is unacceptable to have postings such as this that refer to killing," even though it's clear that Captain Mal is simply stating that he only kills if he has to, and not because a poster made him do it. Comic Review: Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest #1 Posted: 27 Sep 2011 12:48 PM PDT Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest #1 Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi Art by James Harren Colors by Dave Stewart Letters by Clem Robins Covers by Dave Johnson, Francesco Francavilla Dark Horse Comics Release Date: September 28, 2011 Cover Price: $3.50 Abe Sapien: The Devil Does Not Jest #1 was a twisty little read. Abe is one of my favorite characters from Mike Mignola. Unfortunately, a lot of folks have only the most basic exposure to this character thanks to the Hellboy movies, which don't portray him in his best light. This comic brings a combination of Abe's intellect and badassery to the printed page. A simple trip to meet an acquaintance's relative leads us to the beginning of a warped tale. A lot of this story is a build up to the last few pages, of which I can tell you nothing without spoiling it for you. That said, in this issue Abe brings the pain. Everything he does to his enemies is calculated and deadly...totally laid the smackdown on the hellish minions [...] |

Comic Review: Frank Miller’s Holy Terror Posted: 27 Sep 2011 10:18 AM PDT Holy Terror Written by Frank Miller Art by Frank Miller Legendary Comics Release Date: September 28, 2011 Cover Price: $29.99 To say that Frank Miller's Holy Terror is offensive would be an understatement. It's certainly not for the weak at heart, nor is it for those that would prefer not to read a comic laced with profanity and innuendo. But when you read a Frank Miller comic, you pretty much know what you're getting in to. Considering the history behind the comic and its creator, Holy Terror is certainly a comic book written and drawn by Frank Miller [...] |
Metallica’s Cliff Burton: 25th Anniversary Of Bassist’s Death Posted: 27 Sep 2011 09:08 AM PDT Today commemorates 25 years since the death of Metallica bass player, Cliff Burton. We all know Metallica as the metal behemoth it is today: headlining Big 4 concerts and selling countless albums across the world. All of this is built on the foundation of the band's early days and the three albums that in the same amount of years turned them from exciting new band to greatest band in the world [...] |
Music Review: Sebastian Bach – Kicking & Screaming Posted: 27 Sep 2011 07:01 AM PDT Sebastian Bach Kicking and Screaming Frontiers Records Released September 26, 2011 (UK) CD | MP3 September 27, 2011 (U.S.) CD | MP3 No matter how many years go by, how many reality TV shows he appears on, or how many times he defends Axl Rose, Sebastian Bach will always be the voice of Skid Row. It may be 15 years since he was part of that band and he has even tried to distance himself from that era. Despite these attempts it is clear on his new album Kicking & Screaming that this kind of music is what he does best [...] |
