Wonder Woman Gets All New Origin (Again) Posted: 10 Oct 2011 08:08 PM PDT DC Comics announced on Monday that Wonder Woman, one of their top characters, was getting an all new origin. Aw yeah, origins! People love big deals. And one of the biggest deals in comics over the past few years is the DC Relaunch. And rightly so. I mean, it's one of the biggest comic book companies in the industry sort of erasing their entire history to start over. I say sort of because they didn't make a real cut, they picked and chose what to relaunch and what to keep. But still, it's a safe way to appeal to any new reader that the products could appeal. Except for Legion Lost and Legion of Super Heroes, because their number one issues certainly weren't good places to start [...] |
Check That: Netflix Decides NOT To Turn Their DVD Service Into Qwikster Posted: 10 Oct 2011 06:01 PM PDT Last month Netflix decided to offer up an explanation for the massive price increases that have resulted in the loss of around one million subscribers to the movie rental service. Ever since the announcement that they would be raising their prices, the company has been battling some of the most ferocious criticisms ever seen, and desperately trying to figure out how they can calm the waters. Some of their plans to accomplish this involved promising that they were all done with raising their prices, promising plenty of new content, and separating their instant streaming service from their DVD/Blu–ray–by–mail service, which would now be called Qwikster and require you to manage your movie rental queues on two different websites. But that last decision didn't go over quite as they expected it would, and customers were again outraged. And so, after all of this madness, Netflix has decided to vacate their plans to create Qwikster and just leave everything on the Netflix website as it's always been. Surely people would have rather they remedied the price hikes, but this will have to do for now. [...] |

Comic Review: Halloween Man #3 Posted: 10 Oct 2011 01:39 PM PDT Halloween Man #3 vs. The Invisible Man, Part 3 of 4 Written by Drew Edwards Art and Lettering by Sergio Calvet Halloween Man is a straight up indie comic book. You probably won't find it in your local comic shops, and you won't see it on the racks at any chain bookstores, but you can find it online. Before today, I had heard about the character, but I've never read a single issue. And I'm glad that has been rectified. The comic is about a reanimated corpse that fights monsters alongside his caretaker/girlfriend. It deal with horror elements, and Halloween Man wears a jack-o-lantern t-shirt, which I have to say is a style that I envy. In the current Halloween Man storyline, writer Drew Edwards is taking the title character through a very not-for-all-ages story, as the hero is trying to stop and kill an unknown monster who is murdering workers at a nearby fetish house. In the previous issue, we find out, however, that the killer is The Invisible Man, who has the opportunity to do and torture whoever he chooses because no one can see him commit his felonious acts of malice. This is the penultimate chapter in this storyline and it leaves me wanting more. […] |
Comic Review: Fullmoon Stories Posted: 10 Oct 2011 12:33 PM PDT Fullmoon Stories Story and Artwork by Johan Hoff Dusk Comics Release date August 29, 2011 Cover Price: $11.68 In today's pop culture, when a story is branded as horror, one thinks of violent serial killers slashing people to bits or monsters chasing teenagers down by a creepy lake. While these elements certainly evoke terror, it is refreshing to see a more classic take on horror every once in a while. In Johan Hoff's Fullmoon Stories, the author has collected five short pieces of classically styled horror that have all the best elements of your favorite campfire fare. In the first story, entitled "She Was Loved", our mysterious narrator tells a tale of a love lost before it's time, and the lengths a man would go to to see it restored. The masked narrator then takes us to the world of a lonely young woman who, after finding a companion in an odd place, finds herself doing something she never thought possible. An explorer gets more than he could have asked for in "Her Name Was Tragedy" after unrequited love for a member of his expedition is finally returned in a strange alternate reality. Through the narrator we also meet a projectionist who becomes obsessed with something he can't explain, and the family of a young girl who has been keeping a terrible secret from her. |

Geeks Of Doom Needs Your Questions For NYCC Posted: 10 Oct 2011 11:00 AM PDT Ever read an interview with a comic book writer or artist and say to yourself, "Hey, I can ask a better question that!"? Do you have a question you have always wanted to ask a comic professional, but never had a chance to do so? Well have no fear, Geeks of Doom is here to help. At this year's New York Comic-Con this week, I will be roaming the show floor conducting interviews with various comic writers, artists, and editors. See below for the folks I will be interviewing throughout the week, so if you have any questions for these people, now's the time to let me know: - Brian Wood (Demo/Northlanders) and Becky Cloonan (East Coast Rising/Wolves) - Christos Gage and Rebekah Isaacs (Angel and Faith) - Katie Cook (Gronk) - Ashley Eckstein (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) - Daniel Ketchum (Marvel Editor) [...] |
Spoiler Talk: The Ides of March Posted: 10 Oct 2011 09:33 AM PDT Judging by the literal handful of people at the screening I attended, The Ides of March will disappear from theaters faster than Ryan Gosling's last movie Drive. No doubt to make room for The Thing remake/prequel/whatever (I put gun to my head) or the WTeffingF Footloose remake (I pull trigger) due to infect theaters next week. Too bad. Because The Ides of March asks the eternal question "To what benefit man inherit the Earth if he were to lose his..." yada, yada. Like you care. See it because it has Ryan Gosling (again) and Paul Giamatti, along with Academy Award winners George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Marisa Tomei all at the top of their game. In that way it's a lot like last month's Contagion sporting its Oscar-studded cast, except this time the disease is... power. That was deep [...] |
