Posted: 20 Oct 2011 04:30 PM PDT Blue Estate #6 Point of No Return Original Story by Viktor Kalvachev, Kosta Yanev Script by Andrew Osborne Art by Viktor Kalvachev, Toby Cypress, Nathan Fox, Robert Valley Colors by Viktor Kalvachev Cover by Viktor Kalvachev Image Comics Release Date: October 12, 2011 Cover Price: $2.99 Ever since I began reading Blue Estate it's felt like with each new issue I've been holding my breath waiting for a lull in action or dialogue, or anything to give me a moment's rest. Since issue #1, Blue Estate has been delivering a virtually unending line of pulp action and Blue Estate #6: Point of No Return is no exception. From the start, creator Viktor Kalvachev and his five-man team have made it their personal mission to drag us as readers down into the literal hell that is Los Angeles on the brink of a gang war. In Blue Estate #6 we are introduced and reacquainted with some of L.A's worst, but instead of pulling us out of the cesspool, Blue Estate grabs us by the throat and yanks us in deeper [...] |
Comic Review: Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #7 Posted: 20 Oct 2011 04:00 PM PDT Warlord of Mars Dejah Thoris #7 Written by Arvid Nelson Art by Carlos Rafael Colors by Carlos Lopez Letters by Marshall Dillion Covers by Joe Jusko, Ale Garza, Paul Renaud Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: October 5, 2011 Cover Price: $3.99 This is why we're all lucky that comics are still being published. This story would NOT work in film, television, books, or any other kind of medium. But, it totally works in comic book form. Arvid Nelson knows how to write a fun, exciting, suspenseful story specifically for the comic book art form. It's action from first page to last, always moving, and cliffhangers abound in this issue. Hey, what's not to love about scantily clad woman bouncing (and I do mean bouncing) around fighting, in chains and causing all sorts of mayhem? This is a genuinely fun, well-crafted action story with a GREAT last page shocker [...] |

Posted: 20 Oct 2011 02:00 PM PDT The Trip DVD Directed by Michael Winterbottom Starring Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon IFC/MPI Home Video Release Date: October 11, 2011 Nothing screams cinematic awesomeness like two people's vacation. Joking aside, that's exactly what the team of Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, and director Michael Winterbottom have done with their latest collaboration, a docudrama entitled The Trip. Telling the story of Coogan, who, asked by The Observer to tour the UK's best eateries, teams up with Brydon after his then-girlfriend passes on the short little vacation, the film finds our lead at his wits end when his long-time friend, Brydon, takes the vacant slot on the trip. However slight the narrative may indeed sounds, the film that we ultimately get is both charmingly entertaining and intellectually delectable, more so than it frankly has any right to be [...] |
