Halloweekend of Doom: 13 Movies To Haunt Your Halloween Posted: 30 Oct 2011 09:23 PM PDT It's that time of year again, boys and girls! The temperature has dropped, the leaves have turned from green to varying shades of orange and red; children dress in the guise of their favorite characters, and the flickering of candles show the yellow grins of the jack-o-lanterns adorning the porches of your neighborhood. It's Halloween, folks, and while there's plenty of people out there that like cute, plastic pumpkins on their doors, we here at Geeks of Doom like our Halloweens a little more horrifying. So, it's with this, Halloweekend, that I will be bringing to you a series of horror-themed features that showcase the wicked side of geek entertainment. In the second installment of what I like to call the Halloweekend of Doom, I will be exploring 13 films that will completely fill your Halloween. Don't want to stop watching horror movies all day? I've got your back, sunshine. From midnight to midnight, this list is chock full of frightening elements. Not all are what I personally consider horror, but they're all perfect for Halloween [...] |
$5 MP3 Album Deal: Black Country Communion ’2′ Posted: 30 Oct 2011 05:59 PM PDT Another excellent deal in Amazon's $5 MP3 album sale is Black Country Communion's 2. With a line up boasting the talents of Glenn Hughes (ex-Deep Purple), Jason Bonham (the son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham), Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater), and Joe Bonamassa, Black Country Communion is one of the most exciting rock bands around [...] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2011 01:55 PM PDT Bonnie Lass #1 Written and Illustrated by Michael Mayne Co-Written by Tyler Fluharty Red 5 Comics Release Date: September 21, 2011 Cover Price: $2.99 Bonnie Lass #1 was a fun, light romp of a comic. Oozing with random violence and thinly veiled sexual innuendos, this comic seemed almost a caricature of itself. I felt like nothing was as important as making sure the reader had a good time. This is obviously a comic that doesn't take itself seriously. Bar fights, hostage situations, torn stockings that defy gravity, this has it all. Bonnie Lass is a vivacious young lady more concerned with her cleavage than her safety. The entire plot revolves around a scroll we see at the beginning but we never fully get details regarding it. After a lot of chasing, some really cool aerial views and one badass jump later, we get to see that there is a bad guy in the night...just waiting to make his move [...] |
Criterion Collection Blu-ray Review: ‘Kuroneko’ Posted: 30 Oct 2011 01:00 PM PDT Kurneko Blu-ray | DVD Directed by Kaneto Shindo Written by Kaneto Shindo Starring Kichiemon Nakamura, Nobuko Otowa, Kiwako Taichi The Criterion Collection Release Date: October 18, 2011 You can feel it in the air. The weather is changing, leaves are falling, and costumes are about to be brought out, as Halloween is just a day away. And while the majority of people will be going to the well for their cinematic slices of terror, Criterion, in their inescapable wisdom, has decided to not only follow up last year's great release of the cult horror masterpiece Hausu with yet another cult horror offering, but hell, even cats are involved with this sucker. Kuroneko is the name of this atmospheric gem, and it comes to us from the mind of Japanese auteur Kaneto Shindo. Best known for his fellow Criterion staple, the hauntingly devastating Onibaba, Kurnoeko (Black Cat) is equally as meditative and brooding, and is just as much of a masterful folk tale as that horror classic [...] |
$5 MP3 Album Deal: Mastodon ‘Crack The Skye’ Posted: 30 Oct 2011 12:00 PM PDT One of my favourite metal bands of the last few years has been Mastodon. Their first three albums showed their evolution from violently heavy sludge metal into a more progressive metal band. Album number four, Crack The Skye, was the album Mastodon fans were waiting for them to make and it's only $5 right now. Written largely by guitarist Brent Hinds, while recovering from an altercation with System Of A Down's Shavo Odadjian which left Hinds in a coma, it is a swirling, dream-like but intermittently heavy album [...] |

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 10:00 AM PDT The Ledge Blu-ray | DVD Directed by: Matthew Chapman Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Terrence Howard, Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler IFC/MPI Home Video Release Date: September 27, 2011 Movies and faith, when blended well together, make magical partners. Be it great pieces based around specific biblical events or narratives surrounding those who may be questioning their own faith due to hardships encountered in their lives, cinema plays as a wonderful vessel for filmmakers looking at giving the world distinct and singular takes on what makes organized religion so pertinent in today's culture. The Ledge isn't that film [...] |

Geek Commentary: The Walking Dead: Season 2 Episode 1 Posted: 30 Oct 2011 08:01 AM PDT Watching AMC's The Walking Dead is an all-consuming experience for me. I can't shut up about it for days after, and its really awkward when people start tripping over my dropped jaw. In the interest of my sanity, I decided to transcribe my thoughts about each episode as they happen, rather than let them build up and bubble over into one giant "SQUEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!" that can be heard several towns over. For Season 2, Episode 1: What Lies Ahead, I've compiled a running commentary here, complete with approximate minute marks for reference [...] |
