IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon died after fiery crash; He was 33. Posted: 16 Oct 2011 08:43 PM PDT A very sad day for the racing fans! The racing world was stunned over the tragic death of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon, who died Sunday (October 16) after a horrific 15-car accident at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. During lap 11 of the Las Vegas Indy 300, Wheldon's car flew over another vehicle and landed in a catch fence just outside Turn 2. He was airlifted and was taken to University Medical Center. His death was announced about two hours later. IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard made the official announcement of Wheldon's untimely death.
The Las Vegas Indy 300 was cancelled but his fellow drivers solemnly returned to the track for a five-lap tribute to him. Dan Wheldon won Indy 500 in 2005 and again Last May 2011. He won 16 times in his IndyCar career The 33-year-old champion became the first IndyCar driver to die on the track since rookie Paul Dana was killed in practice on the morning of race day at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2006. He is survived by his wife Susie Behm and their two young sons, Sebastian and Oliver. It is a $5 million payday if he had won. One thing -- despite all the safety precautionary measures, the possibility of accident is very high in auto racing. The sports got the highest high but also got the lowest low.
