Tabloid movie poster

Tabloid
DVD
Directed by Errol Morris
Starring Kent Gavin
IFC/MPI Home Video
Release Date: November 1, 2011

With the current state of popular culture looking more and more like the pages of the tabloid rags any person is able to find at the local grocery store, it's important to see where that storied tradition of possibly slanderous, yet shockingly gripping faux-journalism has come from. You know, it's always important to know history.

And who better to take something like this on than Errol Morris?

Decades prior to when names like Brett Ratner or Charlie Sheen ever graced a single magazine, a woman by the name of Joyce McKinney came onto the scene, and took the world by storm with her larger than life persona, and even weirder (albeit alleged) actions [...]

Back in September, to celebrate the start of EMI Records' "Why Pink Floyd?" marketing campaign that will see the rerelease of 14 of the band's studio albums among other things, organizers staged a recreation of the famous cover art for the band's 1977 album Animals.

Someones Watching You!

Someone's Watching You!
Paperback | Kindle
Written by Forest Lee
Adams Media
Release date: June 18, 2011

If you've ever wondered just how plugged in we all are to the Matrix, you must read Someone's Watching You!, Forest Lee's thorough examination of how all of our personal information is gathered, stored, used, and who's collecting it and why.

When it comes to technology, we all have our personal comfort zones. We're highly selective about who we give our name, address, and phone numbers to, among other precious data. Some of us are fine with finding friends on Facebook, but panic at the notion of online banking. Some folks still refuse to shop online, lest some hack pilfer their credit card number [...]

Movie Review: Melancholia

Melancholia movie poster

Melancholia
Directed by Lars von Trier
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgard, John Hurt, Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling
Release Date: November 11, 2011

To watch Terrance Malick's distinct, creative rendering of the beginning of the universe in The Tree of Life and then experiencing Lars von Trier's incendiary vision of the universe plummeting to eventual debris is to witness two artists displaying unseen audacity as they tackle subjects (beginning and end of times) that once seemed un-filmable. The caustic, operatic, haunting and celestial opening shots to von Trier's Melancholia, which are set to the Tristan and Isolde Prelude in slow motion, depict a world, from an intimate perspective, gradually proceeding to its imminent demise. These horror-laden images, which are intimations of what will transpire later in the film, are surpassingly beautiful and an overwhelming indicator of the astonishing horror and gloom that will pervade the entire film [...]

Watch Footage From The Big 4 Metal Concert At Yankee Stadium

Big 4

If you follow me on Twitter [@eveofdoom] then you know I spent a very headbanging day at Yankee Stadium in New York at The Big 4 metal concert back on Wednesday, September 14, 2011. For an old-school metalhead like me, seeing Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax share a concert bill is a dream come true, and this 7-hour metal extravaganza did not disappoint.

Metallica recently released an official 30-minute video with behind-the-scenes footage and sound check, as well as their performance of "Blackened" (complete with lots of fire and laser-show action) and the encore jam of Motorhead's "Overkill" including members of all four bands.

Watch it here below [...]

Walt Disney Home Entertainment
Release Date: November 1, 2011

It's not always easy being a collector. If you are one of the many out there who, like me, find something they are passionate about and pursue it to the fullest, a lot of time, effort, and money can be spent doing something that others find trivial. For those of us bitten by this bug, it's not about simply possessing a thing. Anyone can possess a thing, but when you collect something, its more about what that item means to you as a whole. On the surface, I buy the Blu-Rays and DVDs I buy because I am a fan of the film first, and want to enjoy it again in my home [...]
