Holiday Geek Gift Guide: Batman Edition

Put on your capes and cowls, everybody! There's pine needles on the living room floor, snow on the ground, and a scent of cinnamon in the air. Your dogs and cats are tearing apart wrapping paper, your family's in town and you can't stop drinking sparkling cider for some reason. That could only mean one thing, folks, it's the nondescript religious holiday season! And that means that it's time to go into credit card debt so that you can show those closest to you that you care, you know? And to make it a little bit easier on you guys, we here at Geeks of Doom have been shoveling our driveways so that we can deliver to you this, The Holiday Geek Gift Guide - Batman Edition! The best bat-gifts possible for the geeks on you gift-giving list!

As you can see, I've changed up the intro a smidge, and that's simply because today we celebrate the holiday in the best way possible, with The Batman. Yes, The Batman. And while it may not make much sense to you that we're doing this, you fail to realize that Batman makes everything better. In fact, the presence of Batman-centric holiday gift guide on this site makes not only this site better, but also it makes the world better. And isn't that truly what the holidays are about? Making things better or something like that? Sure, why not! Anyway, it's been a pretty big year for The Dark Knight, and that will certainly be evidenced by the majority of this list. We'll also be making it a little easier on you by narrowing this list down by separate topics such as comics (and comic-inspired items), statues, Batman: Year One, and Arkham City. Sure there will be some overlap, but that's all right because we're talking about Batman! So let's start of with the merriest of merries, comic books! [...]

Blu-ray Review: Kevin Smith: Too Fat For 40

Kevin Smith: Too Fat For 40

Kevin Smith: Too Fat For 40
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Joey Figueroa
Starring Kevin Smith
Shout! Factory
Release Date: October 18, 2011

Virtually anyone who was alive in the Nineties knows the name Kevin Smith. His movies are both epic and notorious. His ability to draw in the viewer is no different whether he is in front of the camera or behind it. Kevin Smith: Too Fat For 40 is his fourth Q&A-styled video presentation and his only one filmed on his birthday.

Filmed in the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey (Smith's hometown), this was originally aired as a two-hour special, but the video release is an uncut three-and-a-half hour version! Let me say that I have been a huge fan ever since Clerks and have thoroughly enjoyed all of his films (I refuse to speak of *cough cough* Jersey Girl *cough cough*) and his Q&As [...]

Comic Review: Brimstone and the Borderhounds

Brimstone

Brimstone and the Borderhounds #1-4
Written by Brimstone, M.H Carnevali
Art by Sajad Shah, Thiago Castro, Allen Chickering
Hound Comics
Cover Price: $3.99

Brimstone and the Borderhounds, if anything, is the progression of several artists and writers as they try to understand the intricacies of creating a comic. I have chosen to review all four issues of Brimstone and the Borderhounds because it needs to be examined in its entirety. I was fortunate enough to get all four issues instead of one at a time and thankfully it made a world of difference to this review and me.

The first issue of Brimstone and the Borderhounds left me feeling so underwhelmed that I could never have imagined that it could pick itself up and actually become a decent comic [...]

Marvel Comics Digital App 3.0

Marvel Comics has launched the 3.0 version of their application for Android and iOS. The new design mirrors that of the updated DC Comics and the Comixology apps. The new version sorts comics not only by new and featured, but also by creator. It features larger thumbnail images of the art and a full screen interface for information about a given book rather than the pop-up window that the previous incarnation of the app utilized. [...]

Ray Bradbury Finally Okays ‘Fahrenheit 451′ eBook

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 01:00 PM PST

Fahrenheit 451

Oh the irony!

This week, Simon & Schuster released the eBook version of Ray Bradbury's classic novel Fahrenheit 451.

The famed 1953 dystopian classic about a future America in which people are ruled by electronic devices, reading is banned, and firefighters are ordered to set fires to burn books expressed Bradbury's deep-seated belief at the time that society was heading down a bad path where people's interest in literature and learning would eventually be replaced by television [...]

‘Fright Night’ Remake Writer To Pen ‘Ouija’

Ouija Board

This sucker will just, not, die.

THR is reporting that Marti Noxon is set to pen the newest draft of the screenplay for the upcoming project Ouija.

That's right. The board game that aides youngsters in getting in touch with the other side is still hellbent on making its way to the big screen, this time, in the hands of the same scribe behind this year's shockingly entertaining Fright Night remake [...]

The show is a reboot of the beloved 1960s series, and has recently gotten a pilot order from the company, and now has Singer as its pilot's director [...]

Geek Gear: Nathan W. Pyle’s Dark Knight Shirt

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 10:58 AM PST

The Dark Knight - Chess

Woot has an incredible t-shirt available today that features one of the best marriages of two concepts ever. Batman and chess.

I'm kinda in love with this shirt, to be honest. I mean, who doesn't love a good game of chess? It challenges you to think, at the very least, one step ahead. And what is the most popular character to also do that? Batman. Just brilliant! It's an awesome shirt and it's only $10! Oh, and it glows in the dark! [...]

Nothing is known yet about her role, but she joins an impeccable cast bringing back the crew from the first film, as well as Benicio del Toro, who will play the role of villain for the new one. The movie hits on May 17, 2013 [...]

Watch Now: The Second ‘John Carter’ Trailer Is Up

Posted: 01 Dec 2011 08:01 AM PST

John Carter

The latest trailer for John Carter, the big-budget adaptation of the classic 1912 sci-fi novel A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, has been released and you can watch it here below.

When the first teaser trailer for the film was released back in July it was greeted with a decidedly mixed reception. The casting of Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) in the coveted lead role of a Confederate soldier who finds himself on Mars (called Barsoom by its inhabitants) caught between two warring Martian groups didn't seem justified [...]
