Neil Gaiman, Trent Reznor & Other Artists’ Open Letter To Washington Regarding SOPA, PIPA Posted: 18 Jan 2012 08:15 PM PST A group of artists have written an open letter to Washington regarding the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (PROTECT IP) acts that have led numerous websites to go dark in protest today. Artists include American Gods, Sandman, and Neverwhere author Neil Gaiman, comedian/actor Aziz Ansari, and Nine Inch Nails frontman and Oscar winning composer Trent Reznor, just to name a few. The letter was posted on the Stop The Wall website, and you can read it in full below, including a list of those who have signed it. [...] |
‘Twilight’ Vampire Joins The Cast Of ‘True Blood’ … As A Vampire Posted: 18 Jan 2012 07:00 PM PST Christopher Heyerdahl, who plays the vampire Marcus Volturi in The Twilight Saga franchise, has joined the season 5 cast of HBO's True Blood, where he will again bear vampiric fangs in a recurring role. According to EW, Heyerdahl will be taking on the character of Dieter Braun, an ancient and incredibly powerful vampire who plays a significant part in the intelligence of the Authority we've heard so much about. Apparently he's also got a special talent when it comes to torturing people. [...] |
Excelsior! Check Out The ‘Community’ Gang Envisioned As Marvel’s X-Men Posted: 18 Jan 2012 06:00 PM PST I've made it clear in the past that in recent months Community has become one of my absolute favorite television comedies of all time. So as I and millions of fans of the show around the world anxiously await its still-undated return it's time that we take stock of Community's limitless supply of awesomeness and how it can be applied to other geek-related properties. We've seen the Community's cast of characters depicted in fan artwork as Batman villains and the Avengers. Now artist Aviv Or has outdone them all with his vision of Greendale Community College's finest study group as Marvel Comics' uncanny team of super-powered mutants, the X-Men. [...] |

Single issues and trades, they're all here. [...] |
Watch Now: Kerry Conran’s Original Test Footage For ‘John Carter Of Mars’ Posted: 18 Jan 2012 04:00 PM PST In less than two months Disney will premiere John Carter, the long-gestating adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic 1912 sci-fi adventure A Princess of Mars that introduced readers to Captain John Carter and his spectacular adventures on the planet Barsoom (which we all refer to as Mars). When the Andrew Stanton-directed movie finally opens it will be the culmination of more than eight decades of failed efforts on the part of filmmakers such as John McTiernan (Die Hard, Predator), Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City), Jon Favreau (Iron Man), and even famed stop motion animation wizard Ray Harryhausen. Posted: 18 Jan 2012 03:00 PM PST G.I. Joe #9 Written by Chuck Dixon Art by Alex Cal Colors by J. Brown Letters by Shawn Lee Covers by Dave Wilkins, Wil Rosada, and Nick Runge IDW Publishing Release Date: January 4, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Cobra Command begins in G.I. Joe #9 and Cobra proves they are NOT something to dismiss easily! Finally, Cobra IS a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world -- and I get the feeling they just might. Chuck Dixon packs an awful lot of story into this first chapter of Cobra Command. He gives us a nice recap of the whole Cobra Civil War storyline in about three lines of dialogue, so the whole issue isn't a recapping of what came before [...] |
After ‘Red Tails’ Troubles, George Lucas Wants To Retire To Indie Films Posted: 18 Jan 2012 02:00 PM PST George Lucas going indie for the rest of his filmmaking career? I'll believe it when I see it, but hey, that's exactly what the director/lightning rod has revealed as his plan going further. In a profile in the New York Times, the filmmaker's producing partner, Rick McCallum, reveals that "he will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker," with Lucas departing from blockbuster titles and going on to make films that are described as being "..small in scope, esoteric in subject and screened mostly in art houses. They'll be like the experimental movies Lucas made in the 1960s, around the time he was at U.S.C. film school, when he recorded clouds moving over the desert and made a movie based on an E. E. Cummings poem." [...] |
Comic Review: The Lone Ranger #1 Posted: 18 Jan 2012 01:00 PM PST The Lone Ranger #1 Written by Ande Parks Art by Esteve Polls Colors by Marvelo Pinto Letters by Simon Bowland Covers by Alex Ross, Francesco Francavilla Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: January 4, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Dynamite Entertainment brings back the reason we all played Cowboys and Indians when we were kids. I'm happy to report The Lone Ranger #1 is an instant classic! And now inker Ande Parks has become known as WRITER Ande Parks. Writer Ande Parks totally amazed me with this issue. Yes, I've been a fan of his run on The Green Hornet and Kato titles, but I feel here that he's hit his stride. He writes The Lone Ranger like it's a creator-owned property and not like a licensed property, and therein lies the difference. Parks would do well teaching this skill to some other writers out there [...] |
‘Battle Royale’ Finally Coming To DVD and Blu-ray In The U.S. Posted: 18 Jan 2012 12:00 PM PST First released overseas more than a decade, the futuristic Japanese survivalist action-drama Battle Royale is finally coming to DVD and Blu-ray for the first time in the United States. Distributor Anchor Bay Entertainment has even cut a brand new trailer to promote the release. You can watch it here below. The film is based on a popular manga and is set in a time where overpopulation and an unstable economy forces the Japanese government to institute the Battle Royale Act, whereupon one class of students will be taken each year against their will to a small island and forced to fight for their lives. [...] |
Tommy Lee Jones Joins ‘Emperor’ Posted: 18 Jan 2012 11:00 AM PST Talk about perfect casting. Variety is reporting that Tommy Lee Jones has joined the cast of the upcoming film, Emperor, in the role of the stern General Douglas MacArthur. Jones as a cranky Army general? Yeah, that's a bit of a stretch. Joking aside, the film is helmed by Peter Webber, and will find Jones joining Matthew Fox in the project, which is a romance drama looking into the question of whether or not the then Emperor Hirohito should ultimately come to justice for the crimes he committed during WWII. [...] |
The Geeks Of Doom Round Up 2: ‘West Of Memphis’ and ‘Pogo’ Posted: 18 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST For 2nd edition of The Geeks Of Doom Round Up, Greg takes a look at the trailer for West Of Memphis, produced by Peter Jackson, which focuses on the long-running West Memphis Three case. For our music selection this week, Andy takes a listen to Pogo, and his Fresh Prince mashup song, "Jaaam." [...] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Comic Review: Danger Girl: Revolver #1 Posted: 18 Jan 2012 09:00 AM PST Danger Girl: Revolver #1 Written by Andy Hartnell Art by Chris Madden Colors by Jeromy Cox IDW Publishing Release Date: January 18, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Andy Hartnell brings the girls back in Danger Girl: Revolver #1. Like most comics in the action-spy genre this issue paid homage to the movies, comics, and novels that have defined the spy franchise. Instead of the sleek, classy, and cool agent, Hartnell re-introduces readers to his impossibly proportioned heroines. Danger Girl: Revolver #1 is an introduction to this genre done right. With dynamic art and choreography, this issue introduces a brand new Danger Girl storyline lacking any dull moments. From the second this issue started it demanded the reader's attention [...] |
Watch Now: ‘The Walking Dead’ Midseason Premiere Episode “Nebraska” Gets A Sneak Peek Posted: 18 Jan 2012 08:01 AM PST Well anyone who's been watching The Walking Dead knows that the days of wine and roses aren't coming any time, especially in the wake of the events of the mid-season finale. Last Sunday AMC aired a special sneak preview of the upcoming mid-season premiere episode titled "Nebraska" after Hell on Wheels. You can watch the video (plus a bonus video from the episode) here below. [...] |
Comic Review: Green Hornet #21 Posted: 18 Jan 2012 07:00 AM PST Green Hornet #21 Written by Ande Parks Pencils by Ronan Cliquet Colors by Ivan Nunes Letters by Marshall Dillion Covers by Phil Hester, Jonathan Lau, and Brian Denham Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: January 18, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 While reading The Green Hornet #21, I just couldn't help but think "this is a great, old fashioned, mystery man comic." Month in and month out, this title delivers on that level and I don't see it stopping anytime soon. Ande Parks hasn't been writing Green Hornet all that long, but he's really taken to his new job very quickly. I'm most impressed with his use of the reader's intelligence. A lot of his issues are "one & done" stories that reference past issues WITHOUT the use of footnotes! Can you believe that? [...] |
