Music Review: Band Of Skulls ‘Sweet Sour’ Posted: 17 Feb 2012 04:00 PM PST Sweet Sour Band Of Skulls CD | MP3 Vagrant Records Release Date: February 14, 2012 As a music geek, one of my favorite pastimes when listening to a new artist is picking out all of their influences. I can usually figure it out right away, but then there are bands like Band Of Skulls. The English power trio so effortlessly blends styles like blues, classic rock, pop, folk, and garage rock on their new album Sweet Sour that pinning down one or two major influences becomes nearly impossible. Fans of 2009's Baby Darling Dollface Honey need not worry about a sophomore slump. The way that record was produced, it felt as though the band would leap from your speakers into your living room, rocking out right in front of you with every spin. Everything that made the former effort sound fresh and exciting is still here, just tightened and refined without sounding forced or insincere [...] |
Comic Review: Winter Soldier #1 Posted: 17 Feb 2012 02:00 PM PST Winter Soldier #1 Written by Ed Brubaker Art by Butch Guice Color Artist: Bettie Breitweiser Letters by VC's Joe Caramagna Cover by Lee Bermejo Marvel Comics Release Date: February 1, 2012 Cover Price: $2.99 For decades, we all thought that Bucky Barnes was one of the two characters in the Marvel Universe who WAS dead and would actually STAY dead. After reading Winter Soldier #1, I'm sure glad that surviving death is a regular occurrence in the Marvel U. Here's where Ed Brubaker's years of writing Bucky and Captain America pays off. Yes, it's paid off for several years now, but this is different. If it was anyone else but Brubaker writing this series, it might not go over so well. But, Brubaker knows this character like the back of his hand and it shows. It almost feels like you're reading an issue of Captain America where Bucky takes over as the central character [...] |
‘Valley Girl’ Getting Remade By MGM and Clay Weiner Posted: 17 Feb 2012 12:21 PM PST Apparently people are just Nicolas Cage crazy. Here's the story. Deadline is reporting that MGM is, in their imminent wisdom (read: odd insanity) set to remake the 1983 musical, Valley Girl, which was one of the launching pad for the now beloved and often maligned thespian. The studio has tapped Clay Weiner to direct. Wait, who? [...] |

The Drill Down: Inside Blogball Posted: 17 Feb 2012 07:00 AM PST This week, Andrew Sorcini, Devindra Hardawar, Dwayne De Freitas, and Christopher Burnor take a look at other companies that are storing your data without your permission, following last week's coverage of the Path debacle, and later we examine former TechCrunch reporter turned Crunchfund partner MG Siegler's claim that tech journalists today are foregoing putting research and expertise into their work in favor of using sensationalism to chase page views. But first, the headlines... Google develops a home entertainment system, two Kickstarter projects hit the $1 million mark, SNL pokes fun at Verizon marketing, Steve Jobs earns a posthumous Grammy, Twitter beats MSM on news of Whitney Houston's death, The Pirate Bay says goodbye to .torrent files, Apple readies the iPad3 (and tests an 8-in. tablet), and Apple invites inspections of its suppliers [...] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
