Watch Young Joaquin Phoenix as a Daydreaming Geek in ‘The Adventures of Superboy’

Joaquin Phoenix
This isn't exactly a hot news item, and it's not really an unearthed treasure from the history of television obscura, but it's just too good not to share.

While reading John Kenneth Muir's insanely comprehensive The Encyclopedia of Superheroes on Film and Television the other day, I came across something very interesting in the episode guide for the first season of the late 1980's/early 1990's syndicated series The Adventures of Superboy.

The show's 19th episode, entitled "Little Hercules" and first airing on April 15, 1989, revolved around a bullied kid named Billy Hercules who inadvertently triggers a U.S. submarine's nuclear missile launch sequence, and obviously only Superboy can save the day [...]

$3 eBook Deal: Robert A. Heinlein’s ‘The Door Into Summer’

Robert Heinlein The Door Into Summer

As part of Amazon's monthly deal of 100 Kindle ebooks for $3.99 or less, sci-fi master Robert A. Heinlein's The Door Into Summer is on sale for only $2.99.

Originally serialized in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and published in hardcover in 1957, The Door Into Summer follows Daniel Boone Davis, a businessman in 1970 who gets screwed over six ways to Sunday by his partner and his girl and decides to take a 30-year cold nap in suspended animation. His plan to exact his revenge later on doesn't quite work out so well, but that's okay because there's time travel. Time travel, people!! Gotta love Heinlein's brilliance. I wonder if he imagined bad 70's hair, too [...]

Social Blend

The
Social Blend podcast is back, and this week with a bit of a Geeks of Doom tang to it. Fellow Geeks of Doom contributor, and Associate Editor Hunter Camp aka MK2Fac3 joins us on the podcast this week – and we focus a lot on the latest details on Watchmen, Superman: The Man of Steel, Game of Thrones, and more.

Our first geek diversion in the show is looking at the new trailer for Iron Sky, which leads us into a whirlwind discussion of some of the work by Zack Snyder, including Sucker Punch and more. We debate the merits (or lack thereof) of the Before Watchmen prequel comic series from DC Comics. [...]

Patton Oswalt To Become A ‘Working Class Hero’ In New Fox Animated Series

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 10:00 AM PST

Patton Oswalt

The Fox Network's Sunday "Animation Domination" is about to add another high-profile, not-exactly-for-kids cartoon to its line-up. Not letting the failure of the Jonah Hill-starring Allen Gregory and the highly-hyped but under-performing Napoleon Dynamite deter them, the network has granted a "presentation order" to Working Class Hero, a prospective series set in a world where superheroes are underpaid government employees. Actor, comedian, author, and rising geek god Patton Oswalt will provide the voice for the main character, a super-powered father who often finds that battling villains with designs for world domination is a cake walk compared dealing with his rowdy friends and overbearing family. Working Class Hero will be co-written and executive produced by Mike Barker, who executive produced and co-created the similarly-themed Fox hit American Dad with Seth McFarlane [...]

Jamie Benning To Journey ‘Inside Jaws’ For Next ‘Filmumentary’

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 10:00 AM PST

Over the past year Jamie Benning has impressed us film geeks with his own specialized brand of fan-made documentaries he calls "filmumentaries," which are assembled from behind-the-scenes footage, audio and video interviews, commentaries, and so forth to create a comprehensive collage of the making of beloved genre films. So far Benning has produced amazing docs about the Star Wars trilogy and his most recent focusing on the first Indiana Jones adventure called Raiding the Lost Ark. Now the filmmaker has set his sights on the subject of his next "filmumentary." Prepare yourself for Inside Jaws [...]

DVD Review: ‘The Moment Of Truth’ [The Criterion Collection]

The Moment Of Truth The Moment Of Truth DVD | Blu-ray Directed by Francisco Rosi Starring Miguel Mateo The Criterion Collection Release date: January 24, 2012 Some of the best things come in the smallest of packages. And this goes for most things ranging from a present given on a birthday or a new DVD release. Continuing in Criterion's recent run of releasing DVD and Blu-ray packages with few to no special features for $10 less than their normal counterparts, the company has given the world a cavalcade of underseen masterpieces from some of cinema's greatest artists. Be it Antonioni's Identification Of Woman, or last month's release of The Moment Of Truth from auteur Francesco Rosi, Criterion may have shocked fans with these feature-free releases, but they've also given us wonderful films. And as mentioned above, Truth is absolutely no different [...]

Fox Business News Accuses ‘Arriety’ and ‘The Lorax’ of Brainwashing Children

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 08:00 AM PST

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax

As if their fruitless attack on The Muppets wasn't pathetic enough, the propagandatrons at Fox News are continuing to attempt to scare their viewers with that most dreaded of boogeymen - Liberal Hollywood!

Recently Fox Business News anchor Lou Dobbs accused the recently released Disney/Studio Ghibli animated Japanese import The Secret World of Arriety and the soon-to-be-released CGI-animated kids' comedy Dr. Seuss' The Lorax of indoctrinating America's youth into an evil, anti-capitalist, eco-friendly liberal mindset.

Comic Review: Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi #1

Comic Review: Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi #1

Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi #1
Story by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema
Pencils and Cover Art by Jan Duursema
Inks by Dan Parsons
Colors by Wes Dzioba
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: February 15, 2012
Cover Price: $3.50

The debut issue of Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi is, in essence, a Creation Myth, telling the very beginnings and origins of the Jedi and the Sith. Set tens of thousands of years before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, the story tells of how the original order, called the Je'daii, came into being, and how their approaching conflict with the Rakatan Infinite Empire set their course away from balance and into division.

Dawn Of The Jedi, for the Star Wars continuity geek (such as myself – I like to consider myself a bit of an in-universe SW historian) is a dream come true - the publication we've long waited for. From start to finish, Dawn Of The Jedi #1 is chock full of new information about the deeply unexplored ancient history era of the Star Wars universe, providing a solid glimpse into a time where swords were used instead of a lightsaber [...]
