Music Review: School Of Seven Bells ‘Ghostory’ Posted: 01 Mar 2012 07:00 PM PST School Of Seven Bells - Ghostory Audio CD | MP3 Vagrant Records Release Date: February 28, 2012 Every music geek has a pair of headphones they value above all others. Maybe it's those earbuds that shut out the other commuters on the subway, or maybe it's the full studio set that lets you hear bits in your favorite songs you've never heard before. Whatever your pair, the reason you own them is to experience music on a different level. Music can be enjoyed in many different ways, but there are albums that come along that seem to be tailor made for headphones, and the new School Of Seven Bells record, Ghostory, certainly belongs in that category [...] |
‘Game of Thrones’ Director Brian Kirk Adapting Robert Ludlum’s ‘The Osterman Weekend’ Posted: 01 Mar 2012 06:00 PM PST Despite losing the opportunity to call the shots on Thor 2, acclaimed veteran television director Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) has kept busy lining up other jobs in the meantime. Recently he signed on to direct a new film adaptation of Robert Ludlum's 1972 suspense novel The Osterman Weekend, from a screenplay by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand) and Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family). The plot of the film, according to The Playlist, "centers on John Tanner, who is told by a reporter that his friends aren't who they say they are. The reporter then turns up dead, forcing John to go on the run and figure out the conspiracy before he winds up dead himself." [...] |
Creator Owned Comics That You Should Be Reading Posted: 01 Mar 2012 04:30 PM PST Creator owned books are probably the greatest thing about the comics industry for a variety of reasons. As a punk rock, do-it-yourself kind of guy, I love the lack of corporate involvement in creator owned comics. You see, when you read a book from Marvel or DC Comics, you're reading a book that has editorial mandates and corporate interest from Disney and Warner Bros., respectively. To emphasize what that means, it restricts creator input in a series that you're putting your hard-earned money towards. You're not just reading a comic from Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham, you're reading a comic by those two, Jim Lee, Dan DiDio, Mike Marts, and many others who should have no business having input on a comic made by incredibly creative people. You're not reading a comic that's sole intention is to be good, you're reading a comic that a company thinks will sell units. The primary goal of these comics is to make money. So, in essence, you're losing so much with editorial involvement that's not there when you read a creator owned book. No one tells these people what they can and cannot have within the pages of their creations. And while I adore characters like Batman and many other mainstream heroes, there's something magical and pure about reading a comic written and drawn by the creators of the property. So, it's in honor of Creator Owned Day that we wanted to take the time to have a look at some Creator Owned Comics That You Should Be Reading if you're not already [...] |
‘Creator Owned Heroes’ Coming In June Posted: 01 Mar 2012 03:28 PM PST Steve Niles, Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, Kevin Mellon and Phil Noto are pushing the creator owned comics movement even further with Creator Owned Heroes from Image Comics starting in June. Details of the upcoming series are still scarce at this point, but as it appears on the official Facebook page, the series will feature two stories in pseudo-magazine/anthology format. Included in the first issue of the ongoing series is American Muscle from Niles and Mellon, an interview with Neil Gaiman and Trigger Girl 6 by Palmiotti, Gray and Noto. The series is set to focus on new creator owned properties from some of the tops names in the creator owned comics movement. [...] |
Comic Review: The Strange Case Of Mr. Hyde Posted: 01 Mar 2012 03:00 PM PST The Strange Case Of Mr. Hyde Script by Cole Haddon Art by M.S. Corley Colors by Jim Campbell Lettering by Richard Starkings and Comicraft Dark Horse Comics Release Date: February 22, 2012 Cover Price: $14.99 I absolutely love classic stories re-imagined and The Strange Case Of Mr. Hyde is better than most. Imagine, if you will, the immortal tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde mashed up and mixed with a little actual history. We get all new characters and plots that extend what Robert Louis Stevenson presented us over a century ago. Our protagonist on this adventure is Detective Thomas Adye of Scotland Yard. He enters the story on the trail of Jack the Ripper, Victorian England's most famous serial killer. We are quickly introduced to Dr. Jekyll, a not quite reformed murderer who is literally "off the sauce." No longer just the brilliant scientist, he is now a man who battles his personal demons in public [...] |
Watch Now: The Final ‘John Carter’ Trailer Brings The Excitement Posted: 01 Mar 2012 02:00 PM PST With less than two weeks to go before it premieres, it's now do-or-die time for Disney's mega-budget blockbuster franchise hopeful John Carter. The studio has released a final trailer for the film that is vastly more action-packed and plot-driven than previous trailers have been. You can watch the trailer here below [...] |
Comic Review: King Conan: The Phoenix on the Sword #2 Posted: 01 Mar 2012 01:00 PM PST King Conan The Phoenix on the Sword #2 Script by Tim Truman Art by Tomas Giorello Colors by Jose Villarrubia Letters by Richard Starkings and Comicraft Cover by Andrew Robinson Dark Horse Comics Release Date: February 29, 2012 Cover Price: $3.50 I really REALLY wanted to like King Conan: The Phoenix on the Sword #2. Honestly, I did. But, for a variety of reasons, I just couldn't. First off, let's get this outta the way. Tim Truman is a legend in the business. That being said, everyone has an off day. The biggest problem that I had with this issue is that Conan is hardly in it. He doesn't show up until the last quarter of the book, and then it's just for a reveal that really doesn't mean that much. This issue will probably read better in trade than it does in single issue format [...] |
Watch Now: Nathan Fillion & Tim Daly Get Into Character In ‘The Daly Superheroes’ Posted: 01 Mar 2012 12:00 PM PST Nothing can brighten your day quite like a pair of veteran actors playing superheroes on a lazy off day. The latest episode of the web series The Daly Show starring actor Tim Daly (Diner, Wings) and his son Sam finds the elder Daly embracing his inner Man of Steel, requiring an intervention from none other than actor/geek god Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Slither). You can watch the hilarious video, entitled "The Daly Superheroes," here below ...] |
Marvel Comics Now Available In The Apple iBooks Store Posted: 01 Mar 2012 11:00 AM PST I think one of the worst things old school publishing companies can do as they transition into the digital age (kicking and screaming) is lock themselves down into their own application or portal. Apparently someone at Marvel Entertainment thinks so too because Marvel announced this week that a bevy of their most popular graphic novels are now available in the Apple iTunes iBookstore [...] |
Watch Now: ‘Gotham By Gaslight’ Video Game Test Footage Posted: 01 Mar 2012 10:00 AM PST Test footage for an abandoned game based on the events of the 1989 Batman story Gotham by Gaslight has been surfacing recently, and I've gotta say, I pretty much love it. Gotham by Gaslight was a story that placed Batman and his cohorts in a turn of the century one-shot that showed Bruce Wayne returning from his training to become Batman to a Gotham City when notorious serial killer Jack The Ripper hit the streets of his beloved city. If you haven't read the comic, it's an absolute blast, but I could easily talk about Gotham by Gaslight for a whole day. No, this article is about the test footage that has recently been leaked all over the Internet that showcases some of the mood, setting and design of a Gotham by Gaslight game that never was. You can watch the footage here below [...] |
Comic Review: Soulless: The Manga, Vol. 1 Posted: 01 Mar 2012 09:00 AM PST Soulless: The Manga, Vol. 1 The Parasol Protectorate Paperback Written by Gail Carriger Adapted & illustrated by REM Yen Press Release date: March 1, 2012 Last year, I wrote about a deal for the Kindle ebook for Soulless, the first book in Gail Carriger's The Parasol Protectorate series. I had never heard of it, but two pages into the book's online preview, I knew I'd love it. While this first book came out in 2009, a manga version of the novel, Soulless: The Manga, Vol. 1, was released today by Yen Press that's a great adaptation for both fans of the series as well as manga enthusiasts. Soulless takes place in Victorian England in a world where vampires, werewolves, and ghosts live amongst humans. Along with the supernatural and the regular humans are extraordinary people, like Alexia Tarabotti, an unmarried half-English half-Italian young woman who's not only considered a spinster, but also a little bit odd. People in this uptight English society find Alexia unusual because of her intelligence as well as her Italian physical features and seemingly hot-blooded temperament. Little do they know that she's what's known as a preternatural; she has no soul, and when she comes into contact with the supernatural, they lose their powers [...] |
‘Ghostbusters 3′ Officially Loses Bill Murray, But Will the Movie Still Be Made? Posted: 01 Mar 2012 08:01 AM PST Much like the R-rated Spawn movie Todd McFarlane keeps saying is going to happen but most likely never will, Ghostbusters 3 is a movie that is now apparently being kept barely alive through the sheer force of will belonging to the most vocal of its proponents, Dan Aykroyd. Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two Ghostbusters movies, and Harold Ramis, Aykroyd's co-star and co-writer on the original 1984 comedy blockbuster and its less-successful 1989 sequel, have openly expressed interest in doing a third movie, while Bad Teacher scribes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg have written a screenplay that would feature the original Ghostbusters passing their proton packs on to successors who would be younger and more accessible to modern movie comedy audiences [...] |
Comic Review: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Annual #1 Posted: 01 Mar 2012 07:00 AM PST G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Annual #1 Written by Larry Hama Art by Ron Frenz, Ron Wagner, and Herb Trimpe Inks by Sal Buscema Colors by Rachelle Rosenberg Letters by Shawn Lee IDW Publishing Released February 29, 2012 Price: $7.99 I said plenty of times how much I am loving IDW's line of G.I. Joe comics and one of the things I love the most is the Real American Hero series, which picked up from the end of the classic Marvel comics run, and wisely brought back G.I. Joe writer Larry Hama to bring back some of the old magic. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Annual #1 is a great one-off story that perfectly captures the feel of those old stories and speaks straight to the 10-year-old in me [...] |
