‘Chronicle’ Director Josh Trank In Talks For ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff ‘Venom’

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 07:00 PM PST

Venom

We've been hearing about a possible spinoff movie based on the Spider-Man villain Venom for a long, long while now, and now the project looks to have a brand new director in line to make it a reality.

It's being reported that Josh Trank, the director behind the low-budget found footage hit, Chronicle, has entered into negotiations to direct Venom for Sony Pictures, who are preparing to release their reboot of the Spider-Man franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man. [...]

Locke and Key header

Cryptozoic Entertainment announced the release of Locke and Key: The Game, a brand new game based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's Locke and Key.

The card game, based on the critically acclaimed IDW Publishing comic book series about a New England family, their home, and a set of mystical keys, is perfect for a night in with geeky friends who, like myself, will get excited about the massive amount of detail applied. It features loads of cards to give the place the players in specific situations, give the players strength, and even 15 specialized key cards based on the keys of the comic's Keyhouse [...]

Comic Review: King City

King City TP
By Brandon Graham
Image Comics
Release Date: March 7, 2012
Cover Price: $19.99

Brandon Graham's King City represents everything I love about creator-owned comics. In the way that Martin Scorsese directs films that pay homage to cinema, Brandon Graham crafts King City like a love letter to the comics and culture that raised us all. From ninja cats to world destroying elder gods, the collected King City drips with adoration for everything geek.

Joe has returned home to King City after leaving California. In California, Joe trained to become the perfect thief and ninja known as a catmaster. As a catmaster, Joe is able to use his cat, Earthling J.J Cattingworth, as a tool or weapon depending on what injection he uses. Other residents of King City include Pete, a lovesick petty criminal who just fell in love with the alien he helped deliver to some pretty awful people. Joe's ex-girlfriend also haunts the pages of King City as she paints mustaches on billboards and worries over her drug-addicted Xombie War veteran boyfriend [...]

Watch Now: ‘The Muppets’ Channels ‘The Hunger Games’ In This DVD Trailer

The Muppets

For the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray launch of The Muppets Disney has released a new promotional trailer that channels in more than a few ways another much-anticipated release, The Hunger Games.

You can check out the video here below.

I missed The Muppets in theaters last year so I'm anxious to catch the movie in the comfort of my own home. It's good to hear that the big-screen comeback of Jim Henson's cherished creations did well enough at the box office for Disney to green-light a sequel, even though star/co-writer Jason Segel won't be back next time due to a full dance card [...]

DARPA’s Robot Cheetah Can Outrace Humans; Be Glad It’s On Our Side

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 03:00 PM PST

DARPA

Confirming the fact that we are creating the SkyNet/Terminator world that will inevitably spell the destruction of the human race, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), the U.S. government experimental lab devoted to creating state-of-the-art tech weaponry, released a video demonstrating their "Cheetah," a quadruped robot designed to mimic its flesh-and-blood counterpart.

The Cheetah, built by Boston Dynamics (previously responsible for the equally creepy four-legged Big Dog and humanoid PETMAN, and probably one of the basis for FRINGE's Massive Dynamic), reaches a top speed of up to 18 miles per hour (a new record for legged robots, btw). That's nowhere near a real cheetah's top speed of 70 mph, but it's faster than the average human running speed of 15 mph. Not to mention, it never gets tired [...]

Comic Review: EXO-1 and the Rock Solid Steelbots

EXO1

EXO-1 and the Rock Solid Steelbots
Written by Shawn Pryor and Adam Besenyodi
Art by Daniel Logan
Action Lab Comics
Release date: February 29, 2012

Transforming robots and super-powered humans are what you can expect to find in EXO-1 and the Rock Solid Steelbots. Though it doesn't have the most original idea, this graphic novel has a unique perk. Action Lab released EX0-1 and the Rock Solid Steelbots as a limited release with only 500 signed and numbered copies. Signed and numbered anything demands my attention as a collector of all things geek. That being said, I only wish the content within the book was as strong as the limited collection aspects of EXO-1 and the Rock Solid Steelbots.

Almost every standard comic book staple makes an appearance in EXO-1 and the Rock Solid Steelbots. There are giant transforming robots, time warps, aliens, ordinary people infused with super powers, werewolves, ancient artifacts, and finally a ghost. It's almost like the writing team behind this comic wanted to make 13 different comics but had to settle on throwing them all together into one [...]

Blu-ray Review: J. Edgar

J. Edgar Blu-ray

J. Edgar
Blu-ray l DVD
DIRECTOR: Clint Eastwood
WRITER: Dustin Lance Black
STARRING: Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer
Warner Brothers
RELEASE DATE: February 21, 2012

When a historical drama directed by the one and only Clint Eastwood (who also produced and created the original score) starring Leonardo DiCaprio comes along, it fits quite perfectly into what has come to be known as "Oscar Bait": a movie that looks made specifically for awards season.

But when the Academy Award nominees were announced back in January, not only did J. Edgar get passed over for the biggest category, Best Picture, but it was passed over for all categories. No nod for DiCaprio's performance. Nothing for Eastwood's directing or music. Not even a nomination for makeup. [...]

Comic Review: Cow Boy: A Boy And His Horse

Archaia Entertainment
Release Date: March 28, 2012
Cover Price: $19.95

Most all-ages comics try to avoid the hard, harsh realities of growing up. The idea is to typically remind readers that being young is supposed to be full of wonder and magic. Nate Cosby and Chris Eliopoulos take the alternate road in their graphic novel Cow Boy: A Boy And His Horse. The story's main character, Boyd, is a 10-year-old bounty hunter on the hunt for his own criminal family. Growing up just got a little harsher. Cow Boy: A Boy And His Horse is a beautifully written and illustrated graphic novel that reminds us that sometimes our parents are not always good people [...]

Hey Everybody, Here’s The First Look At DC’s Shazam!

Shazam!

DC Comics released some new art on Monday showing off the brand new look and concept for the classic character Captain Marvel, er, um... I mean Shazam!

DC announced back in January that Captain Marvel's name would officially be changed to Shazam, the word used to transform the young Billy Batson into the powerful superhero. And, now, the first image of the newly named Shazam has been released. Check it out in full here below.

So, this is the new Billy Batson that we'll see written by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank? Huh... Well, I don't want to seem too critical because I think it's a decent design. Although, one of the things I actually liked about the magical hero formerly known as Captain Marvel was when he was written with youthful enthusiasm as being a hero considering he's actually a little kid that can be a superhero with one magical word. Based on the artwork, which honestly is not a lot to go on, it appears that the joy is gone. The art's pretty dark, no? [...]

The Lowdown

For every movie that gets released each year hundreds or thousands more don't even make it past the script stage. Some even get cancelled just as filming is about to begin. It's all part of working in the business. Writers know this. Those who are just starting out with dreams of one day writing for the movies scour trade publications such as Daily Variety and Hollywood Reporter and camp out in Internet chat rooms and film fan forums to read in wide-eyed wonder at the joy they found in news stories about young screenwriters who sold their first script to a major studio for untold sums of money. Sometimes those stories are true, but for most screenwriters before you manage to sell one script you will have to write another ten or twenty that will get tossed in some studio executive's waste basket or get locked away in your desk drawer for the rest of time [...]

‘The Killing’ Star Joel Kinnaman Cast As Lead In ‘RoboCop’ Reboot

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 08:01 AM PST

RoboCop

MGM has found their lead for the planned reboot of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi classic, RoboCop.

It's being reported that Swedish-American actor Joel Kinnaman has landed the coveted role of a cop who's gunned down on the job and rebuilt as a part man/part machine supercop who's unleashed to put an end to crime in viciously violent fashion.

The reboot is being directed by Jose Padilha (Bus 174, Elite Squad), and is written by Josh Zetumer. [...]
