Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Retelling ‘Maleficent’ Gets A Release Date Posted: 09 Apr 2012 07:00 PM PDT Walt Disney has settled on an official release date for Maleficent, the retelling of their Sleeping Beauty fable that focuses more on the 1959 animated classic's villain. Maleficent is now set to arrive in theaters on March 14, 2014, so anyone who's been excited to see the movie will have to wait a bit. The live-action retelling will star Angelina Jolie as the dark fairy Maleficent, Disney's "ultimate villain." It will tell the story of how she came to be, and what eventually led her to curse the main character of Sleeping Beauty, Princess Aurora. [...] |
Ben Kingsley In Talks For ‘Iron Man 3′ Villain … Will He Be The Mandarin? Posted: 09 Apr 2012 06:00 PM PDT Marking the exit of Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau and the entrance of new director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), it's been wondered how much---if at all---things would be shaken up for trilogy-maker Iron Man 3. We won't really known the answer to this question until we start seeing goodies from the movie released, but today comes word of a potential villain for the film. It's being reported that the great Ben Kingsley has entered into negotiations to join the cast, and that if everything goes smoothly he would be playing the movie's villain after Jeff Bridges' and Mickey Rourke/Sam Rockwell's turns in the first two installments. Big Things Have Small Beginnings: Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ & Its ‘Alien’ Origins Posted: 09 Apr 2012 05:00 PM PDT Warning: This analysis of Ridley Scott's upcoming film, Prometheus, and its shared mythology with Alien includes potential spoilers, or it could just be a Xenomorph-induced fever dream... "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" This ancient causality dilemma has evoked questions from philosophers of how life and the universe began. Now the question is: Which came first, the Queen Alien or the egg? In Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien, Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger's design for the titular beast was influenced by an aesthetic he termed biomechanical, a fusion of the organic and the mechanic. From the first moment it appeared on screen, the Alien became an iconic movie monster with its elongated, cylindrical (and extremely phallic) skull. The Alien's mouth contained a second, inner set of pharyngeal jaws located at the tip of a long, tongue-like proboscis - a terrifying, phallic weapon that could stab and penetrate human flesh. As Ash (Ian Holm) notes in Alien, "You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? The perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility." [...] |
‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Gets A PG-13 Rating Posted: 09 Apr 2012 04:00 PM PDT The MPAA has given out its rating to The Dark Knight Rises, the third and final Batman film from Christopher Nolan, and that rating is PG-13. Now, what does this all mean? Not a whole lot considering the fact that both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were both released with a PG-13 rating. Both are dark and violent without being overtly dark and violent for the sake of being dark and violent. Does that make sense? Anyway, the only real notable things about this rating are the reasons that are listed for its rating. In The Dark Knight Rises' rating description, it lists: intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language. So, let's look at this [...] |
Posted: 09 Apr 2012 03:00 PM PDT Rebel Blood #1 Story by Alex Link, Riley Rossmo Art & Cover by Riley Rossmo Release Date: March 21, 2012 Cover price: $3.50 "Nobody's sure what's going on here. The only way to describe it is that something… some infection… Something like rabies is sweeping the city." - Rebel Blood #1 While I'm not an exclusive horror reader, my reviews have so far suggested as much, and well, to hell with switching it up, here goes another with Image's new series, Rebel Blood. I was really intrigued by the solicit for Rebel Blood #1 which teased the book as being a world that's "hell in a hand basket": "A highly infectious disease has turned every living thing into zombies. Your neighbors will rend your flesh with their bare teeth. So will the rats. And if the rats don't, the squirrels will. Save yourself. Stay in the woods. Pray it hasn't reached the wolves...and keep your gun loaded." [...] |

Watch The ‘Total Recall’ Trailer With Commentary By Director Len Wiseman Posted: 09 Apr 2012 12:30 PM PDT The trailer for the new adaptation of Total Recall (I hesitate to use the term "remake" since this movie, much like Paul Verhoeven's 1990 movie, is based on Philip K. Dick's 1966 short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale") was unveiled a week ago to little fanfare and the expected gnashing teeth of devoted fans of the Verhoeven movie and haters of remakes and reboots in general looking to justify the kind of boiled-over rage directed at this movie that you wouldn't often find outside of Tea Party gatherings and Bill O'Reilly's dressing room. To help alleviate rising concerns about the film's fidelity - or lack thereof - to its source and the fact that it looks like just about every futuristic actioner out there (OOH! FLYING CARS!) the trailer for Total Recall is being presented complete with a few audio comments from the movie's director Len Wiseman. You can watch the trailer with Wiseman's commentary here below [...] |
Comic Review: Archeologists Of Shadows: Vol. 1: The Resistance Posted: 09 Apr 2012 11:02 AM PDT Archeologists Of Shadows: The Resistance Created by Lara Fuentes & Patricio Clarey Written by Lara Fuentes Art by Patricio Clarey Septagon Studios Release Date: December 14, 2011 Cover Price: $0.99 Okay, I'm a bit late to the party with this one. I'm like the guy that shows up with a six pack of Shiner after getting off work late, only to find everyone has finished drinking. That said, the symbiosis of illustration and prose in Archeologists Of Shadows: The Resistance was astounding! I can only sit here, stunned and amazed. Imagine a world where all things organic are being mechanized. People, animals, bugs...everything. Our protagonists, Baltimo211447w and Alix1739413x (known as files, not people), are unwilling to continue the process that is converting their world to machines. Resistance is futile or so they are told (Yeah, I used a Star Trek/Borg reference, get over it). They are offered a chance to escape this living nightmare and they take it. This is the beginning of our adventure and we are completely submerged into a beautifully rendered (both in words and art) story [...] |
TV Review: Game of Thrones 2.2: The Night Lands Posted: 09 Apr 2012 09:49 AM PDT Game of Thrones Season Two, Episode 2 – The Night Lands Directed by: Alan Taylor Written by: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Starring: Mark Addy, Alfie Allen, Emilia Clarke, Liam Cunningham, Charles Dance, Stephen Dillane, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Fairley, Aidan Gillen, Jack Gleeson, Iain Glen, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Conleth Hill, Carice van Houten, Harry Lloyd, Richard Madden, Patrick Malahide, Rory McCann, Sophie Turner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, and Issac Hempstead-Wright. Game of Thrones continues some world building in order to set the stage for what's to come in the week's ahead, but how does it compare to last week's outstanding season two premiere? Found out after the break. One of the things that Game of Thrones does so well is the ability to handle multiple plots without wasting a single character or moment in order to accomplish great storytelling that gets me engaged in each character introduced. I think a lesser show wouldn't be able to handle the amount of juggling that's needed for this series, and that's why the show has been a master class in character development. Each character featured throughout the episode has at least one, if not more, important moment that not only reinforces, but advances their plot and their character [...] |
Watch Simon Pegg Get Surreal In New ‘A Fantastic Fear of Everything’ Trailer Posted: 09 Apr 2012 08:17 AM PDT In recent years Simon Pegg, the multi-talented British actor/writer who has become a hero to geeks everywhere thanks to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, has been balancing out roles in big-budget Hollywood blockbusters like Star Trek and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol with smaller and odder films like Paul and Burke and Hare. Most of Pegg's fans tend to forget that he started his career in wonderfully out there British television series like Asylum, Big Train, and of course Spaced - the cult classic comedy he created with Edgar Wright and Jessica Hynes. Now that Pegg is a bonafide star and confirmed good luck charm for any franchise that wants to employ his talents (even the Ice Age movies), he has the clout to make darker, riskier films where he can do more than deliver funny lines with that priceless British comic timing of his. Such a movie is Pegg's latest, A Fantastic Fear of Everything, and the movie now has a trailer. You can watch it here below [...] |
Watch Guy Pearce Kick All Kinds Of Ass In The First 5 Minutes Of ‘Lockout’ Posted: 09 Apr 2012 07:13 AM PDT The first five minutes of the upcoming Luc Besson-produced sci-fi action flick Lockout have been released. You can watch the action-packed clip here below. The movie gets right into the thick of the action with a cheeky introduction to our hero Snow (Guy Pearce), an ex-CIA agent who gets set up, double-crossed, and sent to prison. The introduction intercuts his interrogation-cum-face pounding with the backstory as to how he got there. There's a thrilling chase, some close quarters fisticuffs, and Pearce gets plenty of wiseass one-liners. Don't know about you folks but I'll take this over that Total Recall remake any day. Lockout may be derivative as hell, but it sure ain't afraid to wear its influences with a shit-eating grin of pride [...] |
