Geek Gear: Stephen King The Dark Tower ‘Nineteen’ Shirt Posted: 11 Apr 2012 04:50 AM PDT The $10 t-shirt deal of the day over at TeeFury today is inspired by Stephen King's The Dark Tower called "Nineteen" by bisqueets. The sale began at Teefury today, Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at midnight EST, and will continue for 24 hours from then, and once it's over, it will not be sold on the site anymore [...] |
‘The Simpsons’ Creator Matt Groening Finally Reveals Town Of Springfield’s Real Location Posted: 10 Apr 2012 07:04 PM PDT When dealing with mysteries that are embedded into hit TV shows, it's the one that's embedded into perennial animated favorite The Simpsons that stands high above the rest. The mystery? WHICH Springfield, exactly, does this never-aging family reside in?! OK, so perhaps it's not all that important a mystery. Still...the question evolved into a long-running joke which has maddened fans for the over two decades the show has existed, leading many to go to great lengths just to figure out where it might be. DC Comics Introduces National Comics To Debut In July Posted: 10 Apr 2012 06:00 PM PDT DC Comics announced on Monday that it would be introducing a new done-in-one brand named National Comics to explore single characters within the DC universe. This new series of one shots will focus on four announced characters that exist within the "New 52" universe, but do not have a complete home or place, so far. The titles announced are Eternity, Madame X, Rose and Thorn, and Looker. Each comic centers around previously explored characters in the old, even pre-Crisis DC Universe. Which makes all of this very interesting. We'll take a look at the idea of National Comics as a brand after we take a look at each series and the creators that are involved. Ready to go? [...] |
Posted: 10 Apr 2012 05:00 PM PDT Demigods #1 Writer & Creator Jesse Grillo Pencils by Luigi Teruel Inks by Robert Grant Colors by Heather Breckel Letterer & Post Production by Danny Cooper Bleeding Ink Comics Release Date: January 18, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 There's some potential in Demigods #1, but I'm afraid it currently falls a bit short of where it needs to be. I'm sure with a little work and some more issues under their belt, this creative team can turn out a pretty fun comic. But, for now, it's average. I give writer and creator Jesse Grillo an A for effort. He's on the right track. This book has a decent premise at its core -- think X-Men, Gen 13, New Mutants, that sort of thing. A few problems are that 1) It's been done before, and 2) It's been done better. With just a little more originality, I would be on board for this [...] |
Posted: 10 Apr 2012 04:00 PM PDT Titanic (3D presentation) Directed by James Cameron Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane Rated PG-13 Release Date (3D Version): April 4, 2012 I've now officially contributed twice to the highest grossing motion picture in history. I had the opportunity to go out to the movies the other night, and I had a lot of choices, including a remake of 21 Jump Street I'd heard was quite funny, and a reunion sequel to American Pie, but my decision in the end was determined by a film whose experience I couldn't replicate at home: James Cameron's 3D post-conversion of Titanic (1997). The last time I saw Titanic was in the theaters fifteen years ago. It's not that I hadn't enjoyed it; I had always meant to see it again. I'd even picked up a DVD at one point (okay, so I contributed thrice), but I'd never unwrapped it. My recollection of it was that it was technically brilliant, but flawed in many ways. I just never felt that compelled to revisit it. Cameron's year-long, $18 million 3D conversion gave me a good excuse to do just that [...] |
Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ Finally Hitting Blu-ray This August Posted: 10 Apr 2012 02:00 PM PDT Almost four decades ago a movie about a giant killer shark terrorizing a New England tourist community, a concept ripe for a 1950's exploitation cheapie that would pack in the crowds at drive-ins all throughout the deep South, came out of nowhere to become the highest-grossing film ever made and the movie that would forever define what an "event movie" could be. It was the first of the modern summer blockbusters and to this day remains one of the best. It's also one of my absolute favorite movies, one of the few perfect films I've ever seen in fact, and now it's finally about to debut on Blu-ray, which is as good a time for me to invest in a Blu-ray player as any. Jaws, the landmark Hollywood adventure epic that launched the career of its director Steven Spielberg, will be making its high-definition debut this August. Today, Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced a release date for the new disc and premiered a teaser trailer for the release and a video about the pain-staking restoration work done on the film for its Blu-ray debut. You can check out the videos along with some before-and-after restoration comparison stills here below, along with the Blu-ray box art [...] |
Comic Review: Dollhouse, Vol. 1: Epitaphs Posted: 10 Apr 2012 01:02 PM PDT Dollhouse, Vol. 1: Epitaphs Written by Andrew Chambliss, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon Pencils by Cliff Richards Inks by Andy Owens, Cliff Richards Colors by Michelle Madsen Letters by Nate Piekos Cover Art by Phil Noto Dark Horse Comics Release Date: April 11, 2012 Cover Price: $18.99 Dollhouse, Vol. 1: Epitaphs is the trade paperback that collects the first five volumes of the post-apocalyptic follow up to Joss Whedon's short-lived Fox series. For the unfamiliar, Dollhouse was about the secretive Rossum Corporation, who serviced a high-class clientele by providing them with male and female escorts who would be anybody (and do anything) they'd want. To achieve this, they leveraged a technology allowing them to wipe the minds of their escort "actives" and imprint custom personalities to suit the client. After each mission, the actives would get back a docile blank personality and have no memory of their escort mission [...] |
HBO Renews ‘Game Of Thrones’ For Third Season Posted: 10 Apr 2012 12:07 PM PDT HBO announced today that they have renewed Game Of Thrones for a third season, with series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss at the forefront. The highly anticipated premiere of Season 2, which debuted on April 1, 2012, had a reported gross audience of 8.3 million viewers. Season 2 is scheduled to run 10 episodes. The HBO series is based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy book series A Song Of Ice and Fire, and Martin has been an an integral part of the television show's production as one of its executive producers [...] |
Presenting ‘Titanic Super 3D’ As Envisioned by George Lucas, J.J. Abrams & Michael Bay Posted: 10 Apr 2012 10:00 AM PDT The 3D-converted re-release of James Cameron's 1997 Oscar-winning blockbuster Titanic didn't exactly set the box office afire this weekend as it had did back in its day, forcibly ensconced in the number three spot behind The Hunger Games and American Reunion. But considering that the movie had already grossed over $1 billion worldwide in theaters and millions more on video and DVD and that 3D re-releases aren't usually huge ticket sellers unless it's a really slow weekend (and the summer movie season is currently in our cross hairs), this could hardly be considered a major loss for Cameron and the studio. In any case the director still has his deep sea scientific expeditions and the Avatar franchise, which should resume sometime before the bicentennial of the sinking of the Titanic, to consume his livelihood for the rest of time [...] |
Comic Review: Conan The Barbarian #3 Posted: 10 Apr 2012 09:00 AM PDT Conan The Barbarian #3 Script by Brian Wood Art by Becky Cloonan Colors by Dave Stewart Letters by Richard Starkings and Comicraft Cover Art by Massimo Carnevale and John Paul Leon with Dave Stewart Dark Horse Comics Release Date: April 11, 2012 Cover Price: $3.50 Conan The Barbarian #3 features the third part of the eagerly anticipated, by many Conan fans, Queen of the Black Coast. One of the most beloved Conan short stories that Robert E. Howard ever wrote about the world's favorite barbarian. Conan's first meeting with the Pirate Queen Belit is epic in every sense of the word, and thankfully, this comic is too. Brian Wood creates, with help from Robert E. Howard, a very bittersweet tale in this issue. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is SO unlike any other Conan comics before it. Totally different storytelling style, totally different art, and a totally different feel to the book. While I won't go into story details for spoiler reasons, this is NOT your typical Conan story. This is more about Conan the MAN than Conan the BARBARIAN. In fact, there's little to no sword play or action at all, and that's OK. Very well done, all in all [...] |
Roberto Orci Reveals ‘Ender’s Game’ Release Date Posted: 10 Apr 2012 08:01 AM PDT Orson Scott Card's classic 1985 sci-fi adventure novel Ender's Game has been targeted for the celluloid treatment for several years, at one point with Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) in the director's chair. Last year, Summit Entertainment finally got an Ender's movie into production with Gavin Hood (Tsotsi) directing and writing the screenplay adaptation. The project has attracted a cast of acting heavyweights and up-and-coming young stars with 15-year-old British actor Asa Butterfield (Hugo) in the title role of a brilliant child who joins a program designed to produce military officers out of bright children for a war Earth is waging with an alien known as the Formics, or "buggers." Joining Butterfield are Abigail Breslin (Zombieland), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Ben Kingsley (Sexy Beast), recent Oscar nominee Viola Davis (The Help), and Harrison Ford - no stranger to fighting in interstellar wars on screen [...] |
Book Review: Dracula (Illustrated Classics) Posted: 10 Apr 2012 07:00 AM PDT Dracula Illustrated Classics Edition By Bram Stoker Illustrations by Becky Cloonan Harper Design Release date: April 10, 2012 Hardcover | Kindle Vampires are all the rage these days, with Twilight and True Blood, and no doubt Johnny Depp will make his mark on the genre next month with Tim Burton's Dark Shadows. But everyone knows there would be no vampire tales today if not for the granddaddy of them all, Dracula. Now, Harper Design has released a new illustrated edition of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel with art by illustrator and comic book artist Becky Cloonan (American Virgin, Conan The Barbarian). This illustrated classics edition is not a mash-up or an redo -- this is the full version as written by Stoker, the words are exactly the same, nothing has been changed or deleted. What is different about this version of the novel is that it is now a 384-page hardcover book which contains more than 50 original illustrations by Cloonan and it's damn gorgeous [...] |
