Book Review: Zone One: A Novel Posted: 23 Apr 2012 07:21 PM PDT Zone One: A Novel By Colson Whitehead Hardcover | Kindle Doubleday Release date: October 18, 2011 Zone One begins not with the outbreak of a zombie plague, but a few years into its aftermath, when survivor camps and a new government, the American Phoenix, has already been established. In most other places - the great 'out there' - the dead still roam in search of live human food. Colson Whitehead tells the story from the point of view of an extraordinarily average young man called Mark Spitz who is part of a sweeper unit sent out by the military, which has set up a command station in Chinatown, to kill and dispose of the walking dead all over the island of Manhattan, beginning in Zone One, lower Manhattan [...] |
Lionsgate Chooses Director For ‘Hunger Games’ Sequel ‘Catching Fire’ Posted: 23 Apr 2012 06:00 PM PDT This news is a few days old now, but for those who have not yet heard, a director has been chosen to fill in the space vacated by The Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross for the upcoming sequel, Catching Fire. Stepping in for the blockbuster sequel, currently set for release on November 22, 2013, will be Francis Lawrence. Lawrence, who has directed such titles as I Am Legend, Water For Elephants, and Constantine, appears to have been chosen only because he was one of the few whose schedule was clear...something that may not bode well for the constantly growing fanbase. Gina Carano In Talks To Join ‘Fast & Furious 6′ Posted: 23 Apr 2012 05:00 PM PDT Gina Carano was the face of Steven Soderberg's action thriller Haywire, but now she is going from running on the ground to driving fast cars. Thanks in part to the humble success of Haywire, the film brought many opportunities to Carano's doorstep, among those opportunities, a chance to appear in Fast & Furious 6. Whatever the title of the sixth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise may be doesn't really matter. The film was obviously looking for a woman who can kick some ass and seeing as Michelle Rodriguez is out of the picture, it seems fitting that they ask Carano for her services [...] |
RoboCop: Electric Dreams and Cybernetic Wishes… Posted: 23 Apr 2012 04:00 PM PDT Electric Dreams and Cybernetic Wishes... José Padilha's RoboCop remake "Dead or alive, you're coming with me..." Director José Padilha is relatively unknown by American audiences. The Brazilian filmmaker studied business, politics, and economics in Rio de Janeiro before taking up English literature and international politics at Oxford. Padilha emerged onto the film scene in 2002 with the documentary Bus 174, but he is best known for his fiction films Elite Squad and its sequel, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (the highest-grossing film in Brazilian history). The Elite Squad films are action-packed, filled with intense violence, police corruption, and political commentary - which is probably why Padilha was selected to helm MGM and Sony's RoboCop remake. Paul Verhoeven's 1987 film about a police officer (Peter Weller) who is brutally murdered and recreated as a powerful cyborg is by far one of my favorite films. RoboCop was incredibly violent (originally Rated X by the MPAA) and stood out from other action movies as it addressed larger issues regarding media, corruption, and privatization with humor and satire [...] |
‘Dark Shadows’ Original Cast Reunion Photo Posted: 23 Apr 2012 03:04 PM PDT Tim Burton's Dark Shadows will be in theaters next month, and with it comes renewed interest in its source material, the gothic television soap opera that ran from 1966 to 1971, and starred Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, a vampire who returns to his home estate after 200 years locked inside his coffin. (Johnny Depp plays Barnabas in Burton's film.) Sadly, Frid passed away last week at age 87. But Frid and several other original Dark Shadows cast members have cameos in the upcoming film, which comes to theaters on May 11, 2012. Below is a recent photograph taken of some of the original Dark Shadows cast members reunited - David Selby, Lara Parker, Jonathan Frid, Kathryn Leigh Scott, John Karlen, and Marie Wallace [...] |
The Geeks Of Doom Round Up 11: Remembering Levon Helm, Dick Clark, and Greg Ham Posted: 23 Apr 2012 02:00 PM PDT The eleventh episode of The Geeks Of Doom Round Up is here, and Andy pays tribute to Levon Helm from The Band who passed away this week, as we review a clip from the movie, The Last Waltz. For our music selection this week, it's a week of tribute to the fallen, as we pay tribute to Dick Clark and his dedication to rock and roll through the years, with a clip of him introducing KISS playing "Rock And Roll All Night." Later, we also take a look at Bethesda's new upcoming game called Dishonored, and review the recent casting news for Iron Man 3. Finally, we also pay tribute to Greg Ham from Men At Work who also died this week as we close our show with the song "Who Can It Be Now?" Interview: Original Whitesnake Guitarist Bernie Marsden Posted: 23 Apr 2012 01:00 PM PDT From a 'secret' stint with English hard rock outfit UFO guitarist Bernie Marsden has just about done it all. After brief turns in Wild Turkey, Babe Ruth (the English rock band) and Paice, Ashton & Lord, he grabbed the attention of a certain David Coverdale who approached him to join the new band he was putting together. Marsden and Coverdale collaborated on some of Whitesnake's best and most popular songs including "Fool For Your Lovin'" and the magnificent "Here I Go Again." With all this in mind, Marsden and I had plenty to talk about and he was happy to recount his early days with Whitesnake and his surprising appearances with the band last year - when he shared a tender moment with current guitarist Doug Aldrich... Geeks of Doom: Your first big break was with UFO, but that was never an ideal situation for you was it? [...] |
Titan Books To Publish ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Official Novelization Posted: 23 Apr 2012 12:00 PM PDT Last week, Titan Books announced that novelist Greg Cox is set to pen the official novelization of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. You can now pre-order the paperback* edition of the novelization; the book will also be available for the Kindle this July. One notable piece of information here is that this is the first novelization of the Christopher Nolan Batman films that legendary comics scribe Dennis O'Neil has not written. Fans of these Batman novelizations shouldn't worry though, because Cox is no stranger to the concept. Cox has previously written novelizations of other comic book-related work such as Infinite Crisis, Countdown, Final Crisis, as well as novels based on properties like Star Trek, Underworld, Warehouse 13, and original tie-in novels based on Terminator: Salvation and CSI, so his work should be at home with the adaptation of The Dark Knight Rises [...] |

Along with the new album, Asia will also release Resonance, a DVD concert film from the group's 2010/2011 Omega World Tour, as well as a collectors' edition of their eponymous 1982 debut album, which contains their hit song "Heat Of The Moment," which you might remember featured prominently in the Steve Carell comedy 40-Year-Old Virgin [...] |

In the category of Extremely Obvious But Awesome All The Same News today, Warner Bros. made the announcement on their WB 411 Exhibitor Services website that a new trailer for their forthcoming Bat-blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises will debut before The Avengers, when it opens almost two weeks from now. The trailer will run before 2D, 3D, and IMAX 2D and 3D showings of the Marvel superhero spectacle [...] |

TV Review: Game of Thrones 2.4: Garden of Bones Posted: 23 Apr 2012 08:01 AM PDT Game of Thrones Season Two, Episode 4 – Garden of Bones Directed by: David Petrarca Written by: Vanessa Taylor Starring: Mark Addy, Alfie Allen, Emilia Clarke, Liam Cunningham, Charles Dance, Stephen Dillane, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Fairley, Aidan Gillen, Jack Gleeson, Iain Glen, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Conleth Hill, Carice van Houten, Harry Lloyd, Richard Madden, Patrick Malahide, Rory McCann, Sophie Turner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, and Issac Hempstead-Wright Before I sat down to watch "Garden of Bones," I knew that Game of Thrones really needed to kick into gear with this episode. As great as the past episodes have been, I'm tried of plot building and I'm more than ready to see some of the various plots come together with real consequence. I was not disappointed. With a title like "Garden of Bones," I wasn't expecting to see very much in terms of happiness, but this week's episode ratcheted up the intensity of the conflict, while finally moving the plot forward in many ways [...] |
