Watch Now: The Latest Trailer For ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Piles On The Thrills

Amazing Spider-Man

Just in time for the release of The Avengers across the country tonight at midnight comes the third and final trailer for Sony Pictures' The Amazing Spider-Man.

You can watch it here below.

I must say, I really like this trailer. Obviously not everyone is going to be as impressed as I am, but history has taught us that if you try to please everyone you end up pleasing no one. After this trailer your mind will be made up. Personally I'm intrigued by the film's story that explores the backstory of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and the mystery of what happened to his parents (Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz). I love how the filmmakers have embraced the science geek side of Peter, as well as his wiseass nature when he takes to the streets and skies of New York City to fight crime; the Sam Raimi trilogy seemed to mostly gloss over those aspects of the character. The police manhunt led by Captain Stacy (Denis Leary), the father of Peter's girlfriend Gwen (Emma Stone), also plays an important role in the film [...]

Comic Review: Dogs of Mars

Dogs of Mars
Trade paperback
Story by Johnny Zito, Tony Trov and Christian Weiser
Art by Paul Maybury
Image Comics
Release Date: May 2, 2012
Cover Price: $15.99

Dogs of Mars is a comic rooted in restraint. Nearly every panel of this Sci-Fi horror comic is a detailed study in delicacy. Everything from relationships to brutal violence is explored in Dogs of Mars. Yet, none of it is fully exposed to us as readers. When many comics sprint from one extreme to the next, Dogs of Mars plants the first seeds of terror from page one. The result is a completely visceral experience that will leave you checking to make sure your doors and windows are locked.

Dogs of Mars has a pace and tone that should exist organically in this genre of comic yet rarely does. Writers Johnny Zito, Tony Trov, and Christian Weiser have crafted something that will genuinely make you uneasy. That sense of discomfort is in part due to the fact that the writers of this comic have done everything in their power to alienate the reader. Characters are far from home, on an uninhabitable planet and they are being hunted. These are not careful calculating aliens hunting the unfortunate astronauts either. These are rabid and vicious beasts with snapping jaws that will eviscerate everything that comes in their path [...]

You know how your mother always said that if you don't have anything nice to say then you shouldn't say anything at all? Well, screw that. This movie was so utterly ridiculous that I cannot help but try to warn you off before you spend your hard earned cash on it or worse yet, actually watch it. I did manage to entertain my wife while I watched it, though. Mostly by my throwing my headphones off my head in disgust. 7 Below, indeed...this title is likely to represent the watcher's IQ after having viewed it. I really do feel like I lost at least that many points after having viewed suffered through ninety minutes of this.

Imagine a van full of strangers. Okay, well, a van with two brothers, a married couple and two others...but whatever. Anyway, they are on their way to a resort and after a seemingly meaningless pit stop in a podunk town, a few of them start having odd hallucinations. One of which causes the van to wreck and strands them on the side of the road. Luckily, Jack (Ving Rhames) is driving by and gives them a ride back to his place. He rushes them all into his pickup, though I am unsure how all these people got into a single cab truck. His reasoning for hurrying: a "storm is coming." He says it so many times in the beginning of the film that I keep envisioning the original ads for Game of Thrones before the first season started. I even walked around the house repeating it, much to my wife's chagrin. But she's a good sport, she kept it alive for the rest of the night mainly because [...]

Mondo Reveals Tyler Stout’s Poster For ‘The Avengers’ Series

Posted: 03 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Avengers Mondo poster preview

The Avengers is just hours away from release, and to celebrate this momentous occasion, Mondo has decided to release one last poster from their Avengers Series. Posters for S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Hawkeye and Black Widow quickly sold out when they were put up for sale, as did the posters for Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor. But what makes this final poster stand above them all is the fact that all the heroes are assembled and fitted nice and snug inside The Avengers logo.

We've already reviewed the film (which you can read here) and I've given my seal of approval, so getting this poster from Tyler Stout would just make any fan of The Avengers more than happy, especially after it took four years to get to this point [...]

The Lizard Sports A Familiar Garment In This New Photo From ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Posted: 03 May 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Amazing Spider-Man

The Avengers is smashing box office records Hulk-style around the world and The Dark Knight Rises looks to do the same when it opens in July, but the third of this summer's heavily-hyped superhero blockbusters The Amazing Spider-Man is the one both thrill-seeking audiences and longtime fans of the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko creation will watching the closest.

Trailers and stills from the much-derided reboot released in recent months have been greeted with mixed reactions. Most of their vitriol directed at the movie centers on the look of the latest villain to oppose Spidey (this time played by Andrew Garfield) on the big screen: Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), the brilliant scientist whose quest to grow back his missing arm results in his transformation into the Lizard [...]

Comic Review: Marksmen

Marksmen TPB

Script by Dave Baxter
Art by Javier Aranda, Jessica Kholine and Garry Leach
Cover by Tomm Coker

Release Date: May 2, 2012
Cover Price: $15.99

There is a delicate balance between interjecting a message subtly into a story and becoming overly preachy. In some ways, a compelling story has to contain substance and a level of depth to justify itself to readers. On the other hand, when an author has his characters shout from a podium about a hot button issue, it can become tiresome very quickly. Throughout this entire comic, Marksmen walked that line between tactful narrative and evangelization. The creative team behind this comic is enormous, so I can see why some ideas may come off stronger than others. The problem is that, when you are dealing with a comic of this scope, a cohesive tone is paramount. Marksmen would be an incredible and fun comic, if only it would stop telling us what bad people we are [...]

Watch Now: The New Trailer For ‘The Expendables 2′ Is Pure Man Candy

Posted: 03 May 2012 01:35 PM PDT

Expendables 2

Yesterday no less an authority than President Camacho himself, Terry freakin' Crews, promised us that a new trailer for The Expendables 2 would be arriving online today to put a blood-and-skull-splattered boot in our collective ass. Sure enough as I sit here with The Dirty Dozen, the original (and still best) of the all-star superteam action-adventures, playing in the background I sit here writing this: Today Crews' loud and awful snarly promise was fulfilled.

You can watch the mighty new trailer here below.

I'm a huge fan of the first Expendables, but having re-watched it on Blu-ray recently it's clear that the movie has serious problems when it comes to the narrative structure and the staging of the action sequences. Don't get me wrong, Sylvester Stallone did a fine job directing the movie overall, especially when you take into account that he was also writing and starring in the movie at the same time (and taking some near-paralyzing injuries in the process). But when the aging but still active action hero announced that a new director would take the helm of The Expendables 2 while he stuck to acting duties I took a great amount of relief in that news [...]

Music Review: Europe – ‘Bag Of Bones’

Europe - Bag Of Bones

Europe
Bag Of Bones
Produced by Kevin Shirley
earMUSIC
UK Release date: April 30, 2012 CD | MP3
U.S. Release date: May 8, 2012 CD (Import)

Love it or loathe it, the fact is Swedish rock band Europe will always be the band responsible for "The Final Countdown." Twenty-six years on from making one of the most iconic rock songs of all time, new album Bag Of Bones demonstrates a significantly different band.

The current line-up of singer Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist John Leven, drummer Ian Haugland, and keyboard player Mic Michaeli have been together since 2003 (but also played together for most of the '80s) and have worked hard to make the transition from hard rock hair metal to a hard rock blues band. Songs like "Riches To Rags" with its superb guitar solo – a sonic sugar-rush as the tempo kicks up a level and Norum shreds – and lead single "Not Supposed To Sing The Blues" are the perfect example of Europe's hard rock blues [...]

Release date: May 2, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99

Epic Kill, a five-issue miniseries from Image Comics, tells the story of a trained assassin named Song who doesn't remember who she is or where she is. Song is living in a school for troubled girls, but doesn't remember why she's there and how she got there. Parts of her memory are slowly coming back to her and she remembers how to defend herself against a massive amount of armed men who want her dead. She also remembers her main objective: to assassinate the President.

Epic Kill #1 was one fun read. This first issue sets up the entire miniseries very nicely. I'm a fan of action films so I truly feel that Epic Kill will definitely bring the action [...]

Over 7,000 Guitarists Playing Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe’ Break World Record

Posted: 03 May 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Jimi Hendrix

On May 1st in Poland, a musical world record of sorts which will gain entry in the Guinness Book of World Records was broken as more than 7,000 guitarists gathered at the Thanks Jimi Festival with a performance of Jimi Hendrix's version of "Hey Joe," reports Guitar World.

Every form of guitarist style, ranging from classical to acoustic and electric, performed the Hendrix cut, which has been one of the more high profile songs associated with the late guitarist, but was one of the few songs that he performed throughout his short career that he didn't write. Billy Roberts penned the song in the mid 1960s and it passed through renditions by groups like The Leaves and The Standells before it found its way into Hendrix's repertoire [...]
