Watch The First Trailer For ‘Argo,’ Ben Affleck’s Amazing Historical Drama

Posted: 08 May 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Argo

Ben Affleck's remarkable transformation from talk show punchline to acclaimed filmmaker is one of the most remarkable Hollywood comeback stories of recent years. After starting out in 2007 with the excellent Dennie Lehane adaptation Gone Baby Gone and following that up three years later with the hit crime drama The Town, Affleck has returned with his most ambitious directorial effort yet, the true-life drama Argo.

Today Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Argo. You can watch it here below.

The film is based on the true story of "the Canadian Caper," an unusual operation undertaken by the CIA in 1979 to rescue six American diplomats who evaded capture after the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was seized by Iranian revolutionaries [...]

Comic Review: I’m Not A Plastic Bag

Im Not A Plastic Bag

I'm Not A Plastic Bag
Story and Art by Rachel Hope Allison
Forward by Jeff Corwin
Edited by Rebecca Taylor
Design by Fawn Lau
Archaia Entertainment
Release Date: May 8, 2012
Cover Price: $19.95

I've read comics with some pretty strange protagonists before, but this one was definitely a first. The main character of I'm Not A Plastic Bag is a large island made entirely of garbage, based on an actual place -- specifically, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a large spot in the Pacific Ocean which, due to currents, collects most oceanic debris. By debris I mostly mean trash that washes out to sea, water bottles, tires, plastic bags, etc., and by large I mean estimated to be twice the size of Texas. So, very, very large.

Writer and artist Rachel Hope Allison's book is an odd and pretty ballet. This large, unruly mass of trash (loosely resembling Aqua Teen Hunger Forces' Meatwad) tries desperately to interact with the beautiful oceanic landscape it exists in, only to destroy whatever it touches, meanwhile getting bigger and bigger. There are touches of the Frankenstein monster here, which I suspect is what Allison was coyly referring to in the title. It's almost entirely wordless with beautiful colors that tastefully know when to incorporate photography and mixes crazy layouts with lovely splash pages [...]

Watch Now: ‘They Live’ Panel Discussion From Texas Frightmare Weekend

Posted: 08 May 2012 05:00 PM PDT

They Live

I don't know if John Carpenter, one of my favorite directors of all time, will ever again make a movie as good as the genre classics he used to blast out back in the golden days before old school directors like him would be forced to slog away in the salt mines of direct-to-video filmmaking. But during that wonderful near-two decade period when he was without equal in the ranks of America's finest and most prolific directors, Carpenter made many classics that would endear him forever to fans of science-fiction, horror, and action cinema, and his 1988 film They Live was possibly the last truly great feature he would ever sit behind the camera on.

Held over the weekend in Dallas, TX and co-sponsored by Rue Morgue Magazine, the horror convention Texas Frightmare Weekend hosted a panel discussion with the three stars of They Live - former WWF (now WWE) superstar Roddy Piper, Keith David (who also co-starred in another Carpenter classic - 1982's The Thing), and 1980's genre mainstay Meg Foster (Blind Fury, Welcome to Arrow Beach). Rue Morgue's managing editor Dave Alexander moderated the hour-long panel.

You can watch a 16-minute compilation of highlights from the spirited discussion here below [...]

Comic Review: Frankenstein Alive, Alive! #1

Frankenstein Alive, Alive!

Frankenstein Alive, Alive! #1
Written by Steve Niles
Art by Bernie Wrightson
IDW Publishing
Release Date: May 9, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

Steve Niles is a master of horror comics. His ability to craft deeply frightening, personal horror stories is second to none. Niles is able to capture the darkest moments that any person can experience and reduce them to a conversation or a handful of panels. So, when it was announced that he would be working on a Frankenstein comic with IDW, it was not all that surprising. Frankenstein is just as synonymous to horror as Dracula or zombies. The shocking part of Niles' Frankenstein comic, Frankenstein Alive, Alive #1 came from the content within the comic. Instead writing Frankenstein Alive, Alive #1 as a horror comic, Niles has infused this comic with a story about sorrow, despair, and the agony of being a monster [...]

The always popular Mr. Sean Bean has landed a new gig for himself, and it should last him a few years.

Book Review: Bitterblue By Kristin Cashore

Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore

Bitterblue
Hardcover | Paperback | Kindle Edition
By Kristin Cashore
Dial Books
Release Date: May 1, 2012

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore – lucky because this book is cover-to-cover enchantment. Cashore's richly drawn characters, lush settings, and gorgeously detailed descriptions paint a vivid picture in the mind's eye of Queen Bitterblue's world, a world still healing eight years after the death of King Leck. This extended healing period is most definitely not due to the loss of a beloved king, though. Oh no. Quite the opposite, for King Leck was a mad sadist with the extraordinary Grace (that's 'superpower' to us mortal geeks) to get deep inside people's heads and make them do stuff. Bad stuff. We're talking the most heinous, unforgivable crimes imaginable – and quite a few that would never pass through a sane mind even in its most depraved nanosecond. And he did these things purely for his own pleasure [...]

Check Out The Trailer For Jonathan Demme’s ‘Neil Young Journeys’ Doc

Posted: 08 May 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Neil Young Journeys

Neil Young is the subject of an upcoming new documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Jonathan Demme, entitled Neil Young Journeys and by the looks of the trailer, this appears like another bullseye for the seminal, legendary rocker and on equal par filmmaker, both who have storied, rollercoaster-style, yet ultimately successful careers.

Watch the trailer here below.

Young remains at 65 years old one of rock and roll's curious and influential enigmas, with his youthful vitality and earnest approach to his songs, which range from sublime quiet numbers to high octane out and out rockers. He's been on the music scene since the 1960s, trailblazing his way through a bunch of different bands along the way, like Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, as well as his own Crazy Horse lineup. His influence stretches wide and far to this day as each generation of rock and rollers embrace Young as an at-once elder statesman in the rock community and a still viable artist [...]

Interview: ‘Reset’ Writer and Artist Peter Bagge

Reset #1

Take a second and think back on all those life-changing regrets you have in life.

Now suppose you have the chance to relive those missed opportunities. You can say and do all those things you wished you'd said or done. What would you do? What's it going to take to get closure?

If you're has-been comedian and actor, Guy Krause, these questions aren't hypothetical anymore. In Dark Horse Comic's new series Reset veteran underground comics artist/writer Peter Bagge brings his unique brand of humor to this story. Discovered by a rep from a small tech firm during a D.U.I. class, misanthrope Guy is recruited to be a guinea pig for a virtual reality product that lets him hit 'reset' on his life.

Probably most well known for his seminal 90's funny book Hate, which famously mixed the Seattle grunge scene with curmudgeonly cartoonish aesthetics, we recentlly talked with Bagge about his comics career [...]

‘Where the Wild Things Are’ Author Maurice Sendak Passes Away At 83

Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak, the author best known for the children's book Where the Wild Things Are, passed away today in in Danbury, CT, at the age of 83. According to the NY Times, Sendak died from complications from a recent stroke.

Where the Wild Things Are was introduced into the cinematic world via Spike Jones' adaptation of the beloved children's novel in 2009. But the author was also known for novels such as Outside Over There and In the Night Kitchen. Sendak's stories have touched people of all ages and his passing is a great loss in the literary world.

Though Sendak has written many stories, he is best known for Where the Wild Things Are, published in 1963. But it was no ordinary children's book, it was a story that explored the sensations and dangers of a fantasy in a manner that was effective towards a reader of any age. Basically it told children that adults also have dreams [...]

Jessica Chastain Won’t Be In ‘Iron Man 3′

Posted: 08 May 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Jessica Chastain

Back in April, it was reported that The Help star Jessica Chastain was in talks to appear in Iron Man 3 as a sexy scientist and the female equivalent of Tony Stark. Chastain would have joined Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Don Cheadle, all of whom are reprising their respective roles, and newcomers Ben Kingsley and Guy Pierce. But even with the allure of being a part of a blockbuster superhero franchise like Iron Man 3, Chastain could not find a way to fit the film into her schedule and had to pass on the role [...]

Comic Review: Dark Shadows #5

Dark Shadows 5

Dark Shadows #5
Written by Mike Raicht
Art by Guiu Vilanova
Colors by Carlos Lopez
Letters by Troy Peteri
Cover by Francseco Francavilla
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: May 9, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

Dark Shadows #5 is very entertaining. In a lot of ways. You can take it seriously or not, but either way you're going to enjoy it. It seems that main character Barnabas Collins doesn't really WANT to be a vampire, which is interesting. I'm not an expert on vampires, but usually once people turn into them, they really seem to enjoy it.

Series writer Mike Raicht turns out a interesting story for this issue. While it's fun for us, the reader, it's no fun for any of the characters involved. There are a lot of what some people would call "soap opera" elements to comic story telling, but this title is a STRAIGHT-OUT soap opera, just with horror theme to it. It's really nice to read a comic once in a while where there are NO super powers, no fights or super weapons, just good, solid drama and that's what this comic is. Sure, there's a vampire element to it, but Raicht really gets the reader invested in Barnabas Collins the MAN, not Barnabas Collins the VAMPIRE [...]

‘The Avengers’ Destroys Opening Weekend Record; Can It Beat ‘Avatar’?

The Avengers Assemble

It's looking more and more like it's going to be a big summer at the box office. If The Hunger Games The Hunger Games passing $600 million wasn't enough (I know, it came out in March---movies don't follow the seasons accurately), now the ultimate in superhero movies, The Avengers, has arrived, and it is laying waste to all that stand before it.

The movie, which is directed by geek god Joss Whedon, had already scored multiple hundreds of millions of dollars overseas before finally being released this past Friday here in the States. [...]
