Book Review: Halo: Primordium

HALO Primordium

Halo: Primordium
The Forerunner Saga, Book Two
By Greg Bear
Tor
Release date: January 3, 2012
Hardcover | Paperback
| Kindle

In his second book in the Halo: Forerunner saga, the prolific sci-fi author Greg Bear begins Halo: Primordium where he left off in Cryptum, the first book. While Cryptum was told from the point of view of Bornstellar, Primordium is told in first person by Chakas, one of the humans Bornstellar hooked up with on Edyre-Tyrene, a.k.a. Earth, during the events that took place in Cryptum.

Chakas is no longer human, though, as he explains to the ones he calls the Reclaimers in his new form as an AI construct – actually, a failing duplicate of a Forerunner monitor. The Reclaimers, an ONI science team, try to retrieve information from Chakas on the Didact, a Promethean who was the supreme commander of the Forerunner military, and on the human-Forerunner war. Chakas begins his story recounting his childhood friendship with Riser, a tiny human called a Florian, and the events covered in Cryptum, where he and Riser, both following their "geas" (a sort of biological GPS installed by the Librarian to guide humans toward doing the bidding of the Forerunners) on a treasure hunt with Bornstellar, the Forerunner equivalent to a human teenager who rebels against his Builder father, to Djamonkin Crater on Earth where they rouse the Didact from hibernation [...]

It Came From The Interwebs!

With a jetpack fueled by insomnia and an easily amused mind, It Came From The Interwebs scours and sifts through everything that has ever appeared on the internet (more or less) to find a few things that you should know about every week. These things come from the interwebs, hence the clever name.

This week, we return from a few days of getting lost in Tom Hiddleston's eyes to bring you the vampire unicorn cyborg of web junk columns, featuring: the hip hop stylings of Jon Hamm, the meteorological rise of a prince, the gravitational fall of dominoes, and an Icelandic invasion [...]

Doom Digest: Mother’s Day Edition

Doom Digest

Every day here at Doom HQ we receive tons of tips from our readers about really cool stuff from the world of geek, as well as promotional materials for new films, comic books, collectibles, and much more. While we do our best to bring you as much of it as possible, we don't always have enough geek manpower available to cover it all on a daily basis. But we hate the idea of all of this really cool stuff wasting away in our inbox. How could we NOT cover it? Hence why we've resurrected our long-defunct column Bits Of Doom, now rebranded and revamped as Doom Digest, a collection of easily digestible bits of news, videos, photos, and other goodies.

In honor of Mother's Day today, we're dedicating today's edition of Doom Digest to all things Mother's Day [...]

Lance Henriksen Wants ‘Millennium’ Movie

Lance Henriksen Wants Millennium Movie

Out of the realm of television from the 1990s, Chris Carter's Millennium has to be my favorite. An offshoot from The X-Files, the show focused on Frank Black – played by Lance Henriksen – working for a group known only as the Millennium Group, who consults the FBI and local law enforcement on odd crimes and serial killers. I've often made the case for the possibility of a Millennium movie, continuing from where the show left off – and now Henriksen echoes those sentiments of the cult following of the series.

Through press appearances for the upcoming animated series of TRON: Uprising, Henriksen let the cat out of the bag to Coming Soon about his hopes for a Millennium film [...]

SNL's 100th Digital Short

Saturday Night Live has seen some great success with their SNL Digital Shorts, some of which were the most memorable segments of the decade for the show. There was "Firelight," the Twilight parody with Frankenstein; "Laser Cats 5," which poked fun at James Cameron; "Natalie Raps," the hilarious profanity-laced rap video from Natalie Portman; and, of course, the awesome shorts starring Justin Timberlake, like "D*** In A Box" and "Motherlover," the latter of which was created for Mother's Day a few years ago.

This weekend, SNL aired their 100th digital short, which contained flashbacks to some of the most memorable moments from the previous shorts, as well as updates on those shorts, including lots of celebrity cameos.

Watch the SNL's 100th Digital Short here below. I've included some of the most popular digital shorts here below as well [...]
