Forget Dice Rolling and Stop-Motion Animation, ‘Community’ Goes 8-Bit

Posted: 16 May 2012 08:57 PM PDT

Cast of Community

Community has prided itself with superior comedic writing, strong character development, creative episodes (the "Remedial Chaos Theory" episode immediately comes to mind), and having fun with being self-aware. We've seen the study group dive into the world of stop-motion animation, have fun with the cult hit Doctor Who, and take pillow fights and blanket forts to a whole new level.

But the study group is about to venture into a world that sitcoms rarely venture into, the world of 8-bit reality. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the study group "become video game characters to help Pierce (Chevy Chase) stay in the one percent." The trade has the first look at Abed, Pierce, Britta, Shirely, Annie, Troy, and Jeff as 8-bit characters, and you can take a look at their 8-bit forms in the two images below [...]

James Badge Dale Takes The Role of Coldblood In ‘Iron Man 3′

Posted: 16 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT

James Badge Dale as Coldblood

Iron Man 3 is scheduled to begin production within a few weeks, but the casting process isn't quite yet complete. The third installment of the Iron Man franchise as already added Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, and Rebecca Hall to the cast, and now comes word that The Pacific star James Badge Dale will be joining them as Eric Savin.

According to Variety, Savin is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army who accidentally steps on a landmine while on a mission. In order to save his life, cybernetic surgery is performed and he becomes Coldblood. Think of it as Marvel's version of RoboCop. This could mean that Iron Man 3 could be cluttered with three villains instead of two. Pearce would be playing as Aldrich Killain, a man who sells a dangerous technology to villains, and Kingsley would play as the main villain (rumored to be The Mandarin) [...]

A few years ago, a circle of five friends attend Comic-Con International: San Diego, nickname themselves 'The Wrecking Crew 4 Lyfe,' and vow to return every year together. Flash forward to today, they've all come to the Con but jealousy and competitiveness have torn them into factions. All of a sudden, folks that thought they were suffering from Con-rot, that feeling of weariness and nausea most of us have when we've spent way to much time on the floor of a Con, have become flesh-eating zombies.

By the time we get to Fanboys vs. Zombies #2 the Wrecking Crew 4 Lyfe are among the few survivors left at Comic-Con. Now one of our heroes, Rob, is fixated solely on rescuing a celebrity crush. On top of that, the convention center has been rigged as a disaster relief center, built to withstand bombs and hurricanes, trapping them inside. And worst of all, they're facing off against a horde of zombie D&D Cosplayers [...]

Steed & Peel #5
Written by Anne Caulfield

Letters by Ellie DeVille
Covers by Ian Gibson
BOOM! Studios
Release Date: May 16, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

You know, BOOM! Studios should've just named Steed & Peel "The Avengers". I mean, c'mon, that's the actual name of the television show that this comic is based on, so they wouldn't technically be lying. And it would have sold much better, and then a lot more people would be exposed to this fun little comic. Just a suggestion. This MAY be why I'm not in the marketing field.

I've been in love with this series since issue #1. It's a nice, charming mystery/spy thriller that never takes itself seriously, manages to throw in a lot of humor without turning the book into a comedy, and there's plenty of cliffhangers, page-turners, and such that make it really enjoyable [...]

‘Anchorman: The Legend Continues’ Teaser Poster Celebrates Shiny Shoes

Posted: 16 May 2012 02:00 PM PDT

Anchorman

The gang from Adam McKay's Anchorman is coming back for a sequel and if Will Ferrell's announcement on Conan a few months back wasn't enough, and they have shot a teaser trailer that will be attached to showings of The Dictator, it doesn't get any more official than a teaser trailer. But the cherry on top with all this pre-production excitement is the brand new poster that has just appeared online. And if you have a news anchorman foot fetish, it's just everything you want and more.

The new poster for the forthcoming Anchorman sequel confirms that the film will forgo the number in the title and have The Legend Continues in the subtitle. Other than that, the new poster looks like a cool way to sell some shoes. Check it out here below [...]

Comic Review: The Shadow #2

The Shadow 2

The Shadow #2
Written by Garth Ennis
Art by Aaron Campbell
Colors by Carlos Lopez
Letters by Rob Steen
Covers by Alex Ross, Howard Chaykin, John Cassaday, Jae Lee, and Ryan Sook
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: May 16, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

The Shadow #2 is, to put it bluntly, a mystery. But, a really FUN mystery. Filled with action and adventure, if you liked the first issue, you'll love the second. It's Garth Ennis and Aaron Campbell at their best.

I have to wonder what made Garth Ennis take this assignment? Does he have a love for the character? Did he want to prove something to himself by writing a licensed book? Did Nick from Dynamite throw tons of cash at him? Who am I to say? But whatever the reason, I'm sure glad he did. I can't imagine anyone else writing this series. It's not too over the top on blood and guts like a lot of Ennis books are, but I'm sure that's because of the nature of the project. It does have enough edge to it to make it feel deadly serious, and not just another watered-down version of a pulp hero. The pacing is perfect, it speeds up when it needs to and slows down and gets into the heavy story beats when you need them. Something that I LOVED about this issue was that it's SO full of story. This isn't something you're going to read in 5 minutes and forget about in 10. This is a comic that your actually going to get $4+ of entertainment out of [...]

TV Review: Game Of Thrones 2.7: A Man Without Honor

GOT - A Man Without Honor Review

Game of Thrones
Season Two, Episode 7 – A Man Without Honor
Directed by David Nutter
Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss
Starring Mark Addy, Alfie Allen, Emilia Clarke, Liam Cunningham, Charles Dance, Stephen Dillane, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Fairley, Aidan Gillen, Jack Gleeson, Iain Glen, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Conleth Hill, Carice van Houten, Harry Lloyd, Richard Madden, Patrick Malahide, Rory McCann, Sophie Turner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, and Issac Hempstead-Wright

Early on in Games Of Thrones Episode 7, "A Man Without Honor," Theon (Alfie Allen) states, "It's just a game," which obviously serves to comment on the series as a whole, but it also describes most of the characters' intentions throughout the episode: each one of them is playing a smaller game in the context of a much larger and deadlier one.

Arya (Maisie Williams) and Tywin (Charles Dance) continue to be my favorite part of the show week to week. After last week's killing, Tywin is searching top to bottom for the man who "made an attempt on his life" punishing those who aren't giving up the proper details. The two go back and forth in another powerful scene, each trying their hardest to either get or hide information from one another. The scene is a perfect example of how the entire series works as a whole, scaled down and played out over the course of several minutes and plays for beautiful television [...]

Comic Review: Choker, Vol. 1

By Lucid Crash

Choker, Vol. 1

Choker, Vol. 1
Story by Ben McCool
Art by Ben Templesmith
Letters by Tom B. Long
Image Comics
Release Date: May 16, 2012
Cover Price: $16.99

In Choker, Johnny Jackson is a hard-boiled Private Investigator or Gumshoe and he has the cigarettes, trenchcoat, cramped messy office, surly demeanor, and the contempt for the police force that canned him to prove it. What the reader is supposed to assume is he now leads a life of obscurity blurred by booze (even if the first scene finds him spying on the mayor's dalliances), but is about to get his one shot at public redemption when the cops call upon him to catch the drug dealer "Hunt Cassidy" he locked up years earlier.

Jackson is surely an antihero with a vulgar mouth and skeletons in the closet, but he is not without his charms. At his most human we see him caring for his kind and nerdy assistant Seaton Price. With a backstory that is highlighted by the Shotgun Police Force forcing him to take an experimental drug called "Man Plus" which is supposed to turn ordinary civil servants into robocops, Jackson evokes sympathy after being left with a serious side effect that comes to define him. A vise-like gripping hand that has a mind of its own earns him the unfortunate moniker "Choker," and robs him of his badge and dignity after being deemed a danger to others [...]
