Book Review: Dracula, My Love

Dracula My Love

Dracula, My Love
By Syrie James
HarperCollins
Release Date: July 20, 2010
Paperback

If when you read Dracula by Bram Stoker you wished you could get into the head of one of the characters and get an intimate first-person account, then you're in luck. Dracula, My Love is a revisionist novel that retells Stoker's novel from the point of view of Mina Harker (neé Murray). The author, Syrie James, is no stranger to this subset of the historical fiction subgenre, having produced such novels as The Lost Memoirs of Charlotte Brontë and The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen. Through beautifully written prose, she tackles the chain of events in Dracula from Mina's mind and presents what happened in a highly defined manner that gives new context to the original.

Thankfully, it's not told in the epistolary format, through diary entries, or through newspaper clippings. Instead, the reader gets Mina's recollections after the fact. Although there are some changes and additions to Mina and to her history, as well as the sequence of events, James hasn't made too many departures from Stoker's tale and she has, for the most part, lent a sense of discovery that fans will gobble up. She presents a fresh new look that considers many different angles.

Lucy's sleepwalking problems are more drawn out in this novel, and a focal point of the plot. But if you're expecting a lesbian makeout scene a la Francis Ford Coppola's 1993 interpretation of Dracula, you won't find it in this book [...]

Diablo III

The Diablo game franchise has some of the most passionate fans out there, and those passionate fans have been waiting over a DECADE for the newest installment in the series, Diablo III, which finally reached their hands this week.

But where you would expect pure elation from said passionate Diablo fanbase, there's an unexpected amount of anger mixed in with some of the praise. [...]

Daniel Radcliffe Interested In Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’

Posted: 18 May 2012 02:24 PM PDT

Pinocchio

It's great to see that Guillermo Del Toro is finally finding his footing after he had to leave The Hobbit and At the Mountains of Madness. It is expected that after del Toro completes his work on Pacific Rim, he will immediately jump in to co-direct his first stop-motion animated film, Pinocchio, with Mark Gustafson (animation director for Fantastic Mr. Fox).

But this won't be a kid-friendly Pinocchio; no, the film will be based on Gris Grimly's dark interpretation of the story that takes place in Italy between World War I and World War II. Looking at del Toro's IMDB profile, this should not come as a big surprise. The film will also be in 3D [...]

Exclusive Preview: Dark Horse’s ‘Crime Does Not Pay Archives Vol. 2′

Dark Horse: Crime Does Not Pay Archives, Vol. 2

Dark Horse Comics does a great deal to show they love comics as much as many readers do. One of those ways is by collecting material like Creepy, Eerie, Crime Does Not Pay, Journey Into The Unknown, Silver Streak and Forbidden Worlds, which led to the massive censorship of the medium with the Comics Code. I'm a huge fan of the pre-Comics Code books, and Geeks Of Doom was lucky enough to get an exclusive look at several pages of the upcoming second volume of the Crime Does Not Pay Archives, which we've provided here below for your viewing pleasure.

The book looks really cool, and if you're into crime comics like Stumptown, Gotham Central, Queen and Country, and the many other works from Greg Rucka, you should really check out where the genre started with books like Crime Does Not Pay. And speaking of Rucka, he actually has written the forward to this book. So, if you love crime comics, pre-Comics Code books, or just comics in general, make sure to get your hands on a copy of these archives [...]

New ‘Blade Runner’ Film Officially A Sequel; Original Screenwriter On Board

Blade Runner

You would be hard pressed not to hear any questions about the new Blade Runner film during the press tour for Ridley Scott's forthcoming Prometheus. There was a debate amongst fans if the film should be a sequel, a prequel, or something along the lines of Prometheus, but a new press release from Alcon Entertainment confirms for the first time that the film will be a sequel. It also offers a few new details about the film.

Hampton Francher, the original screenwriter who penned the first Blade Runner, has been hired to develop, not write, an original story, according to Warner Bros. As some of you may know, Blade Runner is based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? So just how original the story is while staying true to Dick's universe remains to be seen [...]

Comic Review: The Cast Of Doctor Who

Comic Review: The Cast Of Doctor Who

The Cast Of Doctor Who
Written by Paul J. Slamoff
Art by Jaime Martinez Rodriguez
Colors by Dario Reyes
Cover Art by Joe Phillips
Bluewater Comics
Release Date: March 14, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

Bluewater's unauthorized The Cast Of Doctor Who takes a glance into the backgrounds of a few of the actors who have taken on the role of The Doctor through the years. Without a standard comic storyline, the book serves more as an introduction to the series, specifically designed for newer fans that are interested about the Classic Doctor Who series.

The comic book oddly only looks at four official Doctors (plus a fifth outside canon which we will get to later). I'm guessing this limited examination was restricted based on space available for the publication of the comic. Overall, the comic examines William Hartnell as the First Doctor, Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, and Matt Smith as the current Eleventh Doctor [...]

NSFW ‘Maniac’ Trailer: It’s Elijah Wood Like You’ve Never Seen Him Before

Posted: 18 May 2012 09:11 AM PDT

Manaic

Elijah Wood has played a wide array of characters ranging from penguins and hobbits to Ad-Rock and a man who speaks to a pot-smoking dog. But none of them can even compare to the character he will play in Franck Khalfoun's Maniac. Wood will play as Frank, a man bent on gruesomely murdering random women by scalping them, and using their scalps as a part of the mannequins he creates. He does all of this to cope with the loss of his mother, who had abused him as a child.

Beware, the trailer is not for the faint of heart, it's full of brutal violence, nudity, and rape, so take not it's NSFW. But take a look at the trailer here below if you are interested in the film [...]

The Drill Down 234: Code of Calling

Posted: 18 May 2012 08:16 AM PDT

This week, we look at some new Facebook-related changes on the cusp of their Initial Public Offering, and whether those changes are enough to keep advertisers interested after Facebook goes public. Then, to code or not to code...that is the question.

But first, the headlines...Yahoo's fibbing CEO Scott Thompson gets his comeuppance, and Yahoo gets an interim CEO, Pebble breaks all Kickstarter records at $10 in pledges, Apple moves away from Google Maps, Apple may offer an iPhone with a larger screen and a thinner MacBook, how Yahoo killed Flickr, Google introduces a knowledge graph, and Aaron Sorkin will script Steve Jobs' life [...]

Prepare To Be Boarded...
More Like Bored-ed

Battleship was first released by the Milton Bradley Company in 1943 as the pad-and-pencil game, Broadsides: the Game of Naval Strategy, and then as a traditional board game in 1967. Of course, if you're reading Geeks Of Doom, you're probably most familiar with the 1989 Electronic Talking Battleship and the classic catchline, "You sunk my battleship!"

After the success of toys-to-films franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, toy mega-giant Hasbro reviewed its catalog and selected Battleship as its next project, with director Peter Berg (Hancock, Friday Night Lights) at the helm. In the film adaptation, NASA discovers an extrasolar, Earth-like planet with conditions suitable for life. Using a high-tech communications array in Hawaii, NASA transmits a signal to the far-off planet in an attempt to make contact with potential intelligent life forms [...]
