Paramount Changes Title Of Tom Cruise Actioner ‘One Shot’ To ‘Jack Reacher’ Posted: 29 May 2012 07:00 PM PDT Ads and banners tend to fly and flap in the winds or cover various walls during all kinds of film festivals. Some confirm that a movie is inevitably coming and others confirm that a title has change. This recently happened with director Christopher McQuarrie's new Tom Cruise action/thriller from One Shot, which will now be known as Jack Reacher. McQuarrie's adaptation is an adaptation of Lee Child's novel One Shot, and is actually the ninth book in a series of novels that involve the Reacher character. [...] |
‘Hatchet 3′ Adds ‘Gremlins’ Star Zach Galligan, Dee Snider’s Son, Bear McCreary, Rileah Vanderbilt Posted: 29 May 2012 06:10 PM PDT With filming set to kick off this week near Louisiana, the services of a handful of talents have been enlisted for Hatchet III, the third installment in the saga of feared swamp dweller Victor Crowley. It's been announced that a trio of new actors have joined the cast, starting with '80s star Zach Galligan. The actor is best known for playing the lead in the beloved 1984 Joe Dante horror-fantasy Gremlins, as well as Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Galligan also starred in Waxwork and its sequel, and has continued acting in small-budget features with short TV stints sprinkled in here and there since then. [...] |
Posted: 29 May 2012 05:00 PM PDT Bionic Woman #2 Written by Paul Tobin Art by Leno Carvalho Colors by Mark Roberts Letters by Simon Bowland Cover by Paul Renaud Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: May 30, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Poor Jamie Summers. In Bionic Woman #2, she really gets put to the test of her new "powers." This after thinking she lost her long-time boyfriend, Steve Austin, in a tragic explosion, then surviving an accident that left her almost dead. But thankfully, she got better. Better...stronger...faster. Author Paul Tobin knows how to write two things really well: women and action. In a world where the only super powers that the main character has is being "really strong" Tobin makes this book exciting and intriguing all at the same time. Yes, being a cyborg isn't really a huge super power in the current comic universe, but what I love about this is that Tobin MAKES it awesome in this world. One thing that I really like about the character of Jamie Summers is that she doesn't feel sorry for herself. There's no "I'm a machine, not a woman" tears or breakdowns or anything like that. Just straight-up butt kicking! [...] |
‘The Watch’ Trailer: Exploding Costcos and Alien Photo-Ops Posted: 29 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT Fox has released a toned-down trailer for The Watch. Akiva Schaffer's new sci-fi comedy, formerly known as Neighborhood Watch, stars Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, and Richard Ayoade as a group of local neighborhood watchmen who stumble across an alien plot to destroy the world. Although the trailer tones it down, it is definitely better than the red-band trailer that was released earlier this year. You can check out the new trailer below. We also get a better look at the aliens the neighborhood watch group will be facing in the movie. Vaughn debuted the new trailer on Conan last week [...] |
Book Review: The Book Of Alien Posted: 29 May 2012 03:00 PM PDT The Book of Alien Written By: Paul Scanlon and Michael Gross Published by: Titan Books Release Date: May 29, 2012 Paperback The Book of Alien by Paul Scanlon and Michael Gross was originally published by Heavy Metal Books in 1979. Ridley Scott's return to science-fiction with Prometheus has sparked a renewed interest in the Alien mythos once again, so Titan Books has reprinted this 112-page art book, which features conceptual designs and illustrations that would come to define Ridley Scott's Alien as a science-fiction masterpiece. The book features minimal information about the genesis of Dan O'Bannon's script and the film's production. Instead, The Book of Alien is an art book that focuses strictly on the visual aspects of Alien, filled with countless illustrations and photographs from the film's production. Artists Ron Cobb created hundreds of preliminary sketches of the interiors and exteriors of the Nostromo ship, which went through many design concepts, as well as the escape shuttle, Narcissus. Joining Cobb on the more human aspects of the film was artist Chris Foss, known for his covers of science-fiction novels and spaceship illustrations [...] |
Comic Review: Orbit #8: JRR Tolkien: The True Lord of the Rings Posted: 29 May 2012 02:00 PM PDT Orbit #8: JRR Tolkien The True Lord of the Rings Written by Brian McCarthy and Michael Lent Pencils by Luis Chichón Color by Luis Chichón Letters by Luis Chichón Cover by Hyunsang Michael Cho Bluewater Comics Release Date: May 30, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 Love JRR Tolkien's writing or hate it, you have to respect the intricate fantasy world he built for his hobbits' grand adventures. JRR Tolkien influenced an entire genre of fiction and his most famous offering, Lord of the Rings, inspired generations of devoted fans and writers. Orbit #8: JRR Tolkien: The True Lord of the Rings gives readers a brief, 28-page glimpse into his life. The writers, Brian McCarthy and Michael Lent, manage to cover the major points in Tolkien's life story. The comic book is a quick read, but the narrative never feels rushed. It's like skimming a beautifully illustrated version of Tolkien's Wikipedia page [...] |
Jazz Geek Picks: 3 Classic Blue Note Albums For $5 Each Posted: 29 May 2012 01:00 PM PDT Jazz as a whole is still the most misunderstood and easily dismissed of any music in any genre. Most folks patiently let jazz zealots play their endless amounts of records for them (the jazz genre has multitudes upon multitudes of releases) and quickly denounce them as background soundtrack noise, jumbled notes, and arrangements better heard during shopping at convenience stores or waiting to be whisked up in elevators, than to give it the proper attention it deserves. For the most part, it's one of the few musical genres that is decidedly rooted in American roots, and that's not a statement of jingoism, simply pride. Jazz divides people like no other. Other than the rare popular jazz release or its usage in another forms of medium, (Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue," John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Herbie Hancock's electronic "Rockit" or hip hop artists that liberally sample jazz sounds for example) ultimately, it seems like either one likes jazz music or they don't. To cap, as Frank Zappa so eloquently and hilariously put it as only he could on his 1974 Roxy and Elsewhere album, "Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny." As part of Amazon's monthly $5 MP3 Album Deal for May 2012, there's a great deal on three classic jazz albums in MP3 format right now for only $5 each, and all are encouraged to check them out before the sales ends. - Moanin' by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Somethin' Else by Cannonball Adderley - Speak No Evil by Wayne Shorter [...] |
Comic Review: Star Trek/Doctor Who: Assimilation 2 #1 Posted: 29 May 2012 12:00 PM PDT Star Trek/Doctor Who: Assimilation 2 #1 Written by Scott & David Tipton with Tony Lee Art by JK Woodward Lettering by Shawn Lee & Robbie Robbins Covers by JK Woodward, David Messina & Joe Corroney IDW Publishing Release Date: May 30, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 As the world's first and foremost NON fan of Doctor Who, I went into Star Trek/Doctor Who: Assimilation 2 #1 expecting to like the Star Trek parts and hate the Doctor Who parts. Well, you learn something new every day, right? While I'm not going to go out and buy one of those weird R2-D2-like trashcan things from Doctor Who, I now have a different view of the franchise than I did before. What I loved about this issue is that it starts off with NONSTOP action, something that's not really the norm in the Star Trek universe, but it's a heck of a lot of fun. This issue, the Star Trek part anyway, takes place in the Next Generation universe. Writers Scott & David Tipton, accompanied by Tony Lee, lay out a really interesting comic here. There's two big A-List villains teaming up, but we're not sure how or why - a nice mystery that will come into play later in the series, I'm sure. Then, we switch over to the Doctor Who half of the story. I found this surprisingly entertaining. Again, I know next to nothing about Doctor Who and I came away from this issue actually liking the character of The Doctor. Now THAT'S writing! If you can make a reader interested in a character that they had NO interest in, you've done your job and then some [...] |
Watch Now: ‘Blade Runner’ Behind-The-Scenes Convention Sizzle Reel From 1982 Posted: 29 May 2012 11:00 AM PDT Ridley Scott's sci-fi noir masterpiece Blade Runner (my second favorite film by the way) will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next month, a few weeks after the theatrical debut of Scott's long-awaited return to tentpole idea-driven science-fiction Prometheus. Now that Scott is currently at work on a sequel to Blade Runner alongside original screenwriter - and the man who first gave the project life back in the late 1970's - Hampton Fancher and a three-disc Blu-ray collector's edition set of the original hitting stores later this year (no release date has been set but you can pre-order your copy here), a reappraisal of one of genre cinema's landmark achievements is in order. Several months before Blade Runner's June 1982 theatrical release the Los Angeles-based company M.K. Productions assembled a short 16mm behind-the-scenes promotional film to be screened at sci-fi, fantasy, and horror conventions across the country to drum up buzz about the much-anticipated movie. You can check out the full 13-minute featurette here below [...] |
Book Review: Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual Posted: 29 May 2012 10:15 AM PDT Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual Written by Lee Brimmicombe-Wood Titan Books Release Date: May 29, 2012 Paperback "All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the Corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the Corps!" -- Sgt. Apone, Aliens Originally published by HarperPrism in 1996, Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual serves as a guide to the equipment and procedures of the United States Colonial Marine Corps - those bad-ass Space Marines from the Aliens franchise. Written by Lee Brimmicombe-Wood, a revised edition of the technical manual has been re-released by Titan Books today as a tie-in to Ridley Scott's upcoming science-fiction film, Prometheus. The book is packed with sketches, diagrams, technical schematics, and plans, taking a detailed look at the weapons, vehicles and ships of the USCMC, and the men and women who use them [...] |

Marvel Studios Pres. Says There Will Be A Major New Villain In ‘Thor 2′ Posted: 29 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT With success of The Avengers well behind us, it's time to look ahead at what could be appearing in future entries of the Marvel cinematic universe. Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are all scheduled to hit theaters next year and we pretty much know who the villain is going to be in the former, but we don't know to much about the villain in the latter. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased us on who the villain could be in the sequel about the god from Asgard. In an interview with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Feige says that we will see an Asgard that was left out of the first film and his description of the holy place isn't as pristine as once thought [...] |
Watch This New ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ Trailer Posted: 29 May 2012 07:15 AM PDT A second full-length trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has as popped up online, and once again, it just doesn't do anything for me. With the movie's release just a few weeks away, Fox is attempting to muster up some excitement for the film. Again, this film seems just way too ridiculous and tries to take itself way too seriously. You can check out the new trailer below. The release just happens to coincide with the Memorial Day holiday. Benjamin Walker stars as the 16th President of the United States who moonlights – because we all know vampires can't possibly walk during the day – as a vampire hunter after seeing his mother being bitten by the bloodthirsty beast. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire hunter is based on Seth Grahame-Smith's novel of the same name. Grahame-Smith also wrote the screenplay. Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead also star [...] |
