Sony Could Mimic Marvel Cinematic Universe With ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Venom

If you told me four years ago that a movie like The Avengers would be made, I would have laughed in your face. To create a film based on a team like that would require a lot of time and would need major financing. So instead of just making a straight-up film based on The Avengers, Marvel went forward with focusing on the individuals who make up The Avengers, eventually leading up to the team-up.

Warner tried to go with just with a straight-up film based on the Justice League, but with problems with financing and the writer's strike, the film was put on hold for a couple of years. Seeing the successful formula that Marvel has created, WB might want to replicate that with Batman entering a reboot phase after The Dark Knight Rises [...]

The Longhunters

The Longhunters #1-3
Story by Buck Weiss, Ben Ferrari, George A. Meyers

Letters by Brandon DeStefano, Niki Foxrobot, Phil Wrede
Covers by Ben Ferrari, Victor Moya, Cedric Nocon
Eartbound Comics
Release Date: April 2012
Cover Price: #1: $3.99, #2: $3.50, #3: $2.99

Originally, I had not heard of Earthbound Comics or The Longhunters. As a long-time fan of independent comics, I was more than willing to give it a shake. We get a chance to meet Tom Straw, the Sleepbringer, and watch his journey unfold over the course of a dozen years or so.

The first two issues are a reprint of the graphic novel originally entitled The Sleepbringer, now unavailable unfortunately. Luckily for us, the reissuing of these stories grants us a look into the life of Tom Straw and tells the story of how he came to be known as the Sleepbringer. These first issues also introduce a few of the other characters including the legendary Daniel Boone. The stories jump around in time quite a bit but really serve to enlighten the reader as to who Tom Straw really is [...]

Christopher Nolan Says He Won’t Direct A Sequel To ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Christopher Nolan

It goes without saying that if you are the director of a big blockbuster movie like The Dark Knight Rises, you will probably come across sequel questions during your press rounds. So even though you have stressed, constantly said, and swore that you would never ever continue your Batman franchise for a fourth film, there are those who pester Christopher Nolan with that question. Well, Nolan is saying that he will not, in fact, go on for a fourth film.

While at the Produced by Conference, Nolan responded to the question of doing a forth film with a "No." He backed up that "no" with the following quote [...]

Stephen King’s ‘It’ To Be Adapted Into Two Films By Cary Fukunaga

Stephen King's IT

Another classic Stephen King novel is being adapted into a feature film... make that two feature films. Interestingly enough the project has also attracted an up-and-coming director.

The author's epic 1986 horror tale It, which had been previously made into a four-hour miniseries for ABC in 1990 under the direction of Tommy Lee Wallace (Halloween III: Season of the Witch), is on track to become a two-part movie with Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga calling the shots. Fukunaga will also be teaming with relative newcomer Chase Palmer to write the screenplay adaptation.

Fukunaga previously filmed another literary adaptation: last year's Jane Eyre, based on the celebrated Charlotte Bronte novel. Prior to working on It, Palmer tackled the writing duties on the long-in-development film of Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic Dune [...]

Comic Review: Double Jumpers #1

Double Jumpers #1
Story, Script and Letters by Dave Dwonch
Art and Colors by Bill Blankenship
Action Lab Comics
Release Date: May 30, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

Here's what Action Lab Comics say about there release of Double Jumpers #1: "The chaos begins after Jason and his team of programmers gets stuck in their own virtual reality game and must find a way to get back to the real world. Unbeknownst to them, the fantasy characters they inhabit have taken control of their bodies… and now wizards and warriors run free in Las Vegas during the biggest videogame convention of the year!" Now, I have to admit, reading that description didn't get me very excited, but I was VERY pleasantly surprised at how much I loved the actual comic itself!!

Writer Dave Dwonch knocks it out of the park with this book!!! The story is original, and so are the characters. Yes, they are a group of "stereotypical nerds," but they're really not stereotypical at all. By making them all high functioning nerds, he really makes the story more enjoyable. Moreover, this group of characters is under the gun, not just victims of circumstance like in other stories along this vein that I've read before. This comic is refreshing, new, original and TONS OF FUN! [...]

Check Out These Beautiful ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Illustrations By Frank Frazetta

Lord of the Rings by Frank Frazetta

I know I'm not alone when I say that the late Frank Frazetta will forever be the greatest fantasy artist who ever lived. His illustrations gave new life to marginalized icons of pulp fiction like Conan the Barbarian and John Carter of Mars and inspired countless writers, artists, and filmmakers. Frazetta's artwork stands out from the rest of the pack for its merging of grungy realism and fantastic visuals; his iconic drawings and paintings depicting brawny warriors and chesty maidens battling horrific mutants and monsters made him a legend in the realm of genre storytelling.

When Frank Frazetta died of a stroke more than two years ago his passing left a great hole in the hearts of geeks the world over, but he left behind a legacy of awe-inspiring visions of the fantastic and the frightening that will continue to influence generations of imaginative storytellers until the end of time. Yeah, Frazetta was that damn good an artist.

Frazetta composed a set of seven illustrations inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. These drawings offer an unique perspective of a beloved fantasy classic from a legendary artist you wouldn't typically associate with hobbits and wizards. You can check out Frazetta's artwork here below [...]

E3 2012: ‘The Unfinished Swan’ Gameplay Demo Wows

The Unfinished Swan

Some folks love finding enjoyable new smaller games to download and play from the Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Network. Not being one of them personally, it's only every once in a while that one really grabs my attention. The last big one to blow my mind was Limbo, the hauntingly beautiful tale of a boy making his way through a dark and deadly dream world.

But there's a new game that fits this description that has me incredibly intrigued, and that game is called The Unfinished Swan. [...]

Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish Join Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman In ‘RoboCop’ Reboot

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 12:17 PM PDT

RoboCop

Say what you will about remakes and reboots (yes, they're usually a horrible idea and a classic money-grab technique), but when someone takes the time to put one together, there is always that chance it could be good.

We're still far from knowing whether or not MGM's reboot of the still-incredible 1987 Paul Verhoeven sci-fi classic, RoboCop, will pleasantly surprise us, but what is known is that the studio and director Jose Padilha are doing a fine job putting together an intriguing cast. [...]

Premiere: Mind MGMT #5 and Fatima: The Blood Spinners

Covers, we got covers! And that starts with C and that rhymes with C and that stands for comics. Sorry, I slipped into The Music Man for a second there, but we've got something great for you to check out today and that is our exclusive premiere of covers for Dark Horse Comics' Mind MGMT #5 and Fatima: The Blood Spinners #4.

Fatima comes to us from the mind of Love and Rockets creator Gilbert Hernandez. In this final issue of the mini-series, Fatima and her zombie hunters discover a civilization they couldn't imagine and then face off against a horde of monsters and the horrible truth about the future of humanity. How will the series wrap up? I got no clue, but it sounds exciting [...]

Marvel Comics Begs George Lucas For A ‘Howard The Duck’ 25th Anniversary Blu-ray

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Howard the Duck

I have a complicated history with Howard the Duck.

One of the movies that is synonymous with egregious Hollywood waste and the empirical hubris of a post-Star Wars George Lucas (who produced the movie and with his longtime collaborators Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz writing it and Huyck directing - it would be his last film as a director), Howard the Duck was one of the costliest flops of the 1980s and for years was widely regarded as a bad film. With the advent of cable television and the advancements in home entertainment technology the movie began to develop a healthy cult following and its notorious reputation mostly faded over time.

Howard the Duck was also the first big-budget movie to be based on a Marvel Comics title. Twelve years passed before the next one was released: Blade [...]

Rumor For Your Thoughts: Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Costner To Join Tom Cruise In ‘Magnificent Seven’

The Magnificent Seven

Sometimes a rumor enters your eyespace that you feel has to be made up by someone who has far too much time on their hands and wanted to score some easy traffic for their site. Those are the rumors you scoff at and ignore, mumbling something no one will ever hear you say as you move on to other more reliable news sources. Then there's the times where those rumors surface, and, no matter how fabricated they feel, must be shared with you the masses.

Last month we were surprised to find out that MGM (who's trying to make a big comeback from near death with multiple remakes) was developing a new remake of the western classic (and remake in its own right of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai), The Magnificent Seven with Tom Cruise attached to star. [...]

Doom Digest

Every day here at Doom HQ we receive tons of tips from our readers about really cool stuff from the world of geek, as well as promotional materials for new films, comic books, collectibles, and much more. Hence why we've resurrected our long-defunct column Bits Of Doom, now rebranded and revamped as Doom Digest, a collection of easily digestible bits of news, videos, photos, and other goodies.
