Release Date: June 6, 2012

Very few comics can pick up right where they left off 20 years ago and still maintain the level of creative goodness that G.I. Joe A Real American Hero #179 does. I believe that's due in part to the creative team, but also to the minds of the audience. All it takes is opening the cover and you're right back where you were a couple of decades ago. Sure, you might have a kid or two, a family, a house of your own. But inside we're all the same 10 or 12 year old kids that loved reading this book. The book hasn't changed. We have. A little.

Every G.I. Joe fan needs to buy Larry Hama a drink. If for nothing else, for the fact that he's just awesome. This issue is action from cover to cover. I'll be honest with you, there's not much Joe action here, it's a Cobra-centric issue as the forces of Cobra take on the Blue Ninja Clan, with the help of a Joe or two [...]

Blu-ray Review: John Carter

John Carter Blu-ray Cover

John Carter
Blu-ray | Blu-ray 3D | DVD
Directed by Andrew Stanton
Starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy

Release Date: June 5, 2012

Written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, A Princess of Mars is the first book in the John Carter of Mars series, which tells the story of a Civil War veteran transported to Mars.

For nearly 100 years, Hollywood has failed in its attempts to bring Burroughs' classic science-fiction fantasy to the silver screen, though the ideas presented were borrowed by countless other works.

Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series is so old that it actually influenced other influences. From Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian series to the pulpy Flash Gordon serials of the '30s and '40s that inspired George Lucas's Star Wars, the themes and elements of Burroughs' work have been mined so thoroughly that most moviegoers will find Disney's live-action film adaptation, John Carter, to be rather irrelevant – but that's not to say it isn't entertaining [...]

‘Misfits’ TV Director Tom Green To Helm ‘Monsters: The Dark Continent’

Monsters

Gareth Edwards' Monsters was an unsuspected hit in 2010, and because of its success, Legendary Pictures hired him to helm the reboot of Godzilla. The low budget film features some awesome set pieces and spectacular visuals that looked so real, you thought the it'd ran a huge tab. Of course since the film was a hit, talks of a sequel swirled.

But even after the success of the film died down, those talks of a developing a sequel went with it. Until now. According to Screendaily (via The Playlist) Tom Green has been hired to direct the sequel to Monsters; Monsters: The Dark Continent [...]

Eviscerated Panda - A Metal Tale

Eviscerated Panda – A Metal Tale
By Sarah Tipper
Kindle: U.S.
Paperback: UK
Upfront Publishing
Release date: May 21, 2012

As a huge fan of heavy metal music I'm a sucker for a 'metal tale'. I've read more than my fair share of the things, but often come away from the page, eyes suitably rolled at a whole book based around a simple premise along the shaky lines of, "what story? Didn't you see I just wrote 'Satan' and 'horns' in the same sentence? In a book!" and my faith in my metal-loving friends with an ability to use a typewriter wilts in despair. So it was with understandable caution that I approached my next book, Eviscerated Panda – A Metal Tale.

All anxieties were swiftly blown away by an imaginary Marshall stack: Hell's Bells is this good! [...]

Check Out 2 New Posters For Movie Based On The KISS Album ‘Music From The Elder’

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:00 PM PDT

The Elder Movie

Depending on who you talk to, the ninth album by rock band KISS is either a hugely brave and accomplished album which marks the band's unsurpassed greatest moment or a steaming heap of pretentious bile (admittedly, the former is quite rare). Still, 31 years later one man has taken his love of the album one step further than the average Knight In Satan's Service and decided to turn Music From 'The Elder' into a movie, simply titled The Elder.

And not just a short film, either. This will be a feature "post-apocalyptic road movie" by Seb Hunter, the British writer of the excellent book Hell Bent For Leather – Confessions Of A Heavy Metal Addict. Hunter has recently released two new posters for his movie and you can check them out below [...]

Comic Review: Saga #3

Saga #3

Saga #3
Written by Brian K. Vaughan
Arty by Fiona Staples
Letters by Fonografiks
Image Comics
Release Date: May 16, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99

Within the arguably isolated realm of comic fans, mostly everyone has heard of Saga by Issue #3 and my awesome local comic shop cannot even keep it on the shelves. Even without the unintentional controversy over the first cover, the huge amount of press it has received is almost infamously positive. While there is a rebellious streak in me that doesn't want to like what everyone else likes, with this title I am honored to join the happy choir.

Why does Saga engender such good feelings and good reviews to match? Honestly, this series does not break exceptionally new ground in terms of premise. Fans of Firefly are no strangers to intelligent soap operas being played out in space, and fans of Game of Thrones are familiar with fantastical kingdoms vying for supremacy where the personal is political. Feel free to insert many other references of your own, because as far as settings go, many would apply. What makes writer Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' Saga such an imperative to check out is the nuanced blend of sci-fi and fantasy. The series also seems interspersed with enough politics, sex, drama, and action sequences to catch all the other folks who may or may not care about either of those genres [...]

‘Little Shop Of Horrors’ Coming To Blu-ray This Fall With Original Ending Restored

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 11:15 AM PDT

Little Shop of Horrors

This Fall, the 1986 Little Shop of Horrors get the Blu-ray Book Pack treatment, with a Director's Cut edition which will include a 20-minute restored alternate ending and 40-page booklet.

Little Shop of Horrors began life as a horror-comedy that was shot in three days by director and B-movie legend Roger Corman and released in 1960. More than two decades it was brought back to life as an off-Broadway stage musical that ran for over 2,200 performances and at the time was the highest-grossing off-Broadway production ever produced. In 1986, movie producer and music mogul David Geffen took Little Shop of Horrors back to the big screen in a $25 million musical extravaganza directed by legendary Muppet performer and filmmaker Frank Oz and starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene (who also starred in the off-Broadway show), Steve Martin, Vincent Gardenia, James Belushi, John Candy, and Bill Murray in an inspired cameo based on Jack Nicholson's performance in the 1960 original. It went on to become one of the year's big hits in theaters and on home video, and at the following year's Academy Awards the movie earned two nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Original Song. Unfortunately the film lost in both categories to Aliens and Top Gun, respectively [...]

TNT's science-fiction series Falling Skies is a satisfying blend of Jericho, V, and The Walking Dead, a post-apocalyptic drama that chronicles the aftermath of a cataclysmic, debilitating alien invasion.

Created by screenwriter Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) and executive producer Steven Spielberg, Falling Skies is a 21st century spin on The Spirit of '76 - an American Revolutionary War where the oppressors are extraterrestrials. In only a matter of days, the invaders neutralized our technologies and annihilated 90 percent of the world's population, leaving only pockets of resistance to fight back [...]

Happy 70th Birthday, Paul McCartney!

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 07:19 AM PDT

Paul McCartney

Happy Birthday to Paul McCartney! One of the greatest songwriters currently living today, the ex-Beatle celebrates his, are you ready, 70th birthday today!

McCartney, who grew up in the unassuming town of Liverpool, England on June 18, 1942, went on to become of the most seminal figures of music in the 20th century, churning out a regular assembly line of memorable songs, spanning countless genres, beloved by fans globally, and covered by scores of musicians playing styles ranging from Arpeggio to Zydeco. It would take a book the size of a city's telephone guide to explain the whole machinations of McCartney's body of work and talents, and many scribes have attempted to put the man in biographical and critique form. One of the wealthiest musicians and biggest-selling ones of all time, the McCartney train shows no signs of slowing down or letting up even into the 21st century, as he still tours, performing Beatles songs and ones from his large body of solo work, still releasing albums, guesting on documentaries, charting new genres of music, this jack of all trades remains one of the greatest figures in musical history with his still youthful, whimsical, and witty zeal [...]
