Doom Digest: The Amazing Spider-Man, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Rises, Jaws, Dredd Posted: 20 Jun 2012 06:00 PM PDT Every day here at Doom HQ we receive tons of tips from our readers about really cool stuff from the world of geek, as well as promotional materials for new films, comic books, collectibles, and much more. While we do our best to bring you as much of it as possible, we don't always have enough geek manpower available to cover it all on a daily basis. But we hate the idea of all of this really cool stuff wasting away in our inbox. How could we NOT cover it? Hence why we've resurrected our long-defunct column Bits Of Doom, now rebranded and revamped as Doom Digest, a collection of easily digestible bits of news, videos, photos, and other goodies. Today: Video blogs for The Amazing Spider-Man, Star Trek: The Next Generation theater event, a new TV spot for The Dark Knight Rises, two clips from the Jaws Blu-ray, 10 seconds of Dredd, plus Bits Of Doom [...] |
REMINDER: ‘Futurama’ Season 7 Premieres Tonight! Posted: 20 Jun 2012 05:00 PM PDT If you've been reading Geeks of Doom for a while now, you're aware that we like to offer a friendly reminder whenever Futurama is returning to the airwaves. After its premature cancellation, the battle fans put forth to revive it, and their eventual success, it's hard to feel like the beloved animated series is ever really safe. Because of all of that, Futurama stands as the most important show to remember to tune into when it's on. [...] |
Remembering ‘Jaws’ On Its 37th Anniversary Posted: 20 Jun 2012 04:00 PM PDT Happy 37th anniversary today to one of the great films of all time, Jaws! The great white shark of a film reshaped the cinema circuit when released, and it is generally considered the first summer blockbuster film ever made when it first was exhibited in theaters back on June 20, 1975. Jaws, one of the earliest works by director Steven Spielberg, was a production that seemed as unlikely to become no more than a B-picture when put into production, as there were many doubts plaguing it: the choice of Spielberg as a director, budget and schedule overruns, the way shots weren't working out, logistics and weather terrorizing the production. But most of all, there was the out and out physical fakeness of the shark itself, a large, almost dilapidated life-size mechanized great white, which looked more like an oversized stuffed piñata and evoked giggles when dailies were screened after each shooting day rather than succeeding as Richard Dreyfuss' character, the ichthyologist Matt Hooper so succinctly puts it in the film, "an eating machine." Mondo Celebrates The Summer Of ’82 With Reprint Of Drew Struzan’s ‘The Thing’ Poster Posted: 20 Jun 2012 03:14 PM PDT Avid movie poster collectors would appreciate this piece of news. Alamo Drafthouse will be hosting a release of The Thing as a part of their celebration for "Summer of 82" and to commemorate the release, Mondo will be reprinting the iconic poster that Drew Struzan did himself. Struzan was one of the actual artists who drew the poster for the John Carpenter classic, but the reprint will feature no taglines, to title, cast, or crew, just the striking image of a man with light emanating from his face. Check out the poster below [...] |
Comic Review: Merciless: The Rise of Ming #2 Posted: 20 Jun 2012 02:21 PM PDT Merciless: The Rise of Ming #2 Written by Scott Beatty Art by Ron Adrian Colors by Roni Setiawan Letters by Simon Bowland Cover by Alex Ross Dynamite Entertainment Release Date: June 20, 2012 Cover Price: $3.99 In Merciless: The Rise of Ming #2, I'm not sure what happens. Either Ming's already beyond-repair black soul falls deeper and deeper into the abyss of Hell or more of his own personality comes out. Maybe it's a little of each. All I know is, it's pretty fun to watch. Imagine the creation of Darth Vader. No, not THAT one, the 1983 one. The one that you envisioned in your head after you saw Return of the Jedi and Obi-Wan explained, without too much detail (thanks for that, Ben!) that Anakin Skywalker had indeed fallen to The Dark Side of the Force and became Darth Vader. Remember the story you came up with in your head on the way home from the theater? Well, that's pretty much what Scott Beatty has done here for Ming the Merciless [...] |
‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Kit Harington To Voice Villain In ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2′ Posted: 20 Jun 2012 01:27 PM PDT The sequel to DreamWorks Animation's hit 2009 title How to Train Your Dragon has found itself a villain. Kit Harington, the fast-rising star of the rabidly popular HBO series Game of Thrones, has entered into negotiations to join How to Train Your Dragon 2. Details on who exactly Harington will be voicing are being kept under wraps at the moment, but the character is described as being a "villainous warrior." [...] |
Comic Review: Alabaster: Wolves #3 Posted: 20 Jun 2012 12:00 PM PDT Alabaster: Wolves #3 Written by Caitlin R. Kiernan Art and Letters by Steve Lieber Colors by Rachelle Rosenberg Cover by Greg Ruth Dark Horse Comics Release Date: June 20, 2012 Cover Price: $3.50 Set in the deep South, this is the tale of Dancy Flammarius and her quest to destroy the evil that haunts this world. Alabaster: Wolves #3 is a story within a story, another stepping stone on the path to redemption. Unfortunately for her, Dancy had a parting of ways with the angel who originally stood at her side. Imagine a time, in the not too distant future, where society has collapsed, magic and monsters are real, and no one is to be trusted. Simply wandering through a town can be deadly if you cannot defend yourself. So what teenage girl in her right mind would take on the task of traveling about in these conditions? Perhaps that is the real dilemma. Dancy is armed with not just her wits and skills, but also travels with a talking raven for a guide and a companion in the form of a ghost (of the werewolf she killed) [...] |
Jim Carrey Now Out Of The Farrelly Brothers’ ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ Posted: 20 Jun 2012 11:18 AM PDT It is really sad to see a promising comedy fall apart, especially if it's a comedy that everyone has been waiting for. Let's pretend for a moment like the Dumb and Dumber prequel Dumb and Dumber: When Harry Met Lloyd never happened. Or if you are of the group that never watched it in the first place, then you need not worry. But if you did, pretend it never happened. Everyone has been waiting for a true follow-up to Dumb and Dumber, and for a moment it looked like it was going to happen. Warner Brothers was setting up a sequel, Dumb and Dumber To, which would have the original stars of the film Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels come back and reprise their respective roles. Now it appears that Carry is unhappy with WB's unenthusiastic interest for the sequel, and as a result, he has pulled himself out of the project [...] |
Jim Henson Company Teams With BBC For New Puppet TV Series ‘No Strings Attached’ Posted: 20 Jun 2012 10:00 AM PDT There's been a severe lack of puppetry in our lives lately, something that was finally and mercifully sated by the recent hit, The Muppets, which delivered most 20 and 30-somethings right back to their childhoods. Now, thanks to the success of that movie, The Jim Henson Company can branch out to some other projects. BBC One has announced that they've entered into a partnership with the late, great puppeteer's company for a new series titled No Strings Attached. [...] |
The GoD List: Comics For June 20, 2012 Posted: 20 Jun 2012 09:15 AM PDT Each and every week "Americana Assassin" MK2Fac3 and "Midwest Marauder" Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn't? So, let's take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we'll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of June 20, 2012. Single issues and trades, they're all here. Whhaaaaat?!!? You remember me, right? Well, I apologize for the lack of fac3 (faceless?) time on these here websites. A lot has changed recently and Tuesdays and Wednesdays have become even busier for me recently, what with the new job and all... (pausing for congratulatory high fives), so I've been away for like a week or something and some have said that I phoned in the previous week's, but to those people (HENCHMAN!!!), I say this, "I'm back, BABAY!" And there have been some truly amazing comic books over the last few weeks. Did you guys read Creator Owned Heroes? I may be jumping the gun a little bit since it's only been one issue, but I honestly think it could be a game changer. And while this week may not be jam packed full of potential game-changers, there's some really good stuff to look forward to. So, follow me past the break, so that we can talk about all the great comics that are coming out this week. This is The GoD List, after all [...] |

It's being reported that Jon Bernthal has just signed on to the project, where he'll play a drug dealer and money launderer. Bernthal is best known for his work as Shane on the hit AMC series, The Walking Dead. He's also set to star in Walking Dead series creator and former showrunner Frank Darabont's new TNT series L.A. Noir. [...] |
