Genndy Tartakovsky Helms New Adaptation Of ‘Popeye’ Posted: 25 Jun 2012 06:52 PM PDT Sony Animation must like what they are seeing with Genndy Tartakovsky's Hotel Transylvania (watch the latest trailer here), because they will now reteam for an adaptation of the popular cartoon strip Popeye. According to Variety, the creator of classic Cartoon Network titles such as Dexter's Labatory, Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack, will make Popeye his second directorial effort. Variety says that this Popeye will be in 3D (of course it will be). Known for his ability to gain tremendous strength when he consumes a can of spinach, disproportionate arm girth, and possible speech impediment, Popeye has been through countless cartoon incarnations and one live-action movie starting Robin Williams [...] |
Watch Now: Whimsical First Trailer For ‘Robot and Frank’ Posted: 25 Jun 2012 06:00 PM PDT The last time I saw such wonderful chemistry between a human and a robot was Duncan Jones' Moon. While Frank and Robot doesn't possess the same dark tones that Moon had, it does have a lighter and more whimsy look at the relationship between man and machine. Since the film was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, I have been waiting to see some form of footage from it. Now, Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the first trailer for the film, which you can check out below. Based on the reviews I have read and the trailer that I just saw, Robot and Frank has a lot of heart, and there is just enough tomfoolery in the film to keep me interested. In it Frank, an aging jewel thief, is given a robot caretaker. When he finds a reason to take up the crime he retired from, he trains his robot caretaker in the craft of stealing jewels [...] |
Comic Review: The Voyages of the She Buccaneer, Collected Volume One Posted: 25 Jun 2012 05:03 PM PDT Voyages of the She Buccaneer, Collected Volume One Written by Heidi Hughes Art by Will Hughes Cover by Will Hughes Red 5 Comics Release Date: May 9, 2012 Cover Price: $7.99 Red 5 Comics does us ALL a favor and has published The Voyages of the She Buccaneer Volume One digitally. Yes, I'd LOVE a physical copy of this excellent collection, but beggars can't be choosers and hopefully if this does well enough, maybe Red 5 can convince the Hughes' to put out another She Buccaneer comic that's not digital. I loved this comic back in 2008 and I love it just as much now! Writer Heidi Hughes does an awesome job of spinning a perfect pirate tale with a strong female lead character. And yes, The She-Buccaneer is a buxom brunette bombshell, but after a while you don't even notice that, because the story is so entertaining, you get lost in the characters and events. OK, I'm lying. You TOTALLY notice it ALL through the book. Despite that, this a book that will lose you in its pages for an afternoon. You are quite literally transported to another time and place and withing the first few pages you are sucked into this incredible world and almost nothing short of your house being on fire will tear you away from these pages. Thank your lucky stars that you're reading this as a collection, because a one-month wait between issues would be a killer (and believe me, it was!) [...] |
Good Idea/Bad Idea: Watch 25 Minutes From ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Posted: 25 Jun 2012 04:02 PM PDT A movie studio's marketing team generally releases tiny and sometimes insignificant clips to movies to drive up public interest, which hopefully in turn will make some amazing box office numbers. But when does it become too much? Is 5 minutes worth marketing clips too much? 10 minutes? What about 25 minutes worth of footage? Well apparently Sony has cross that threshold and released 25 minutes worth of footage from The Amazing Spider-Man. Not consecutively of course. But it was just enough for someone to piece together and make a condensed version of the full movie. Check out the video below. Oh and big spoilers will follow [...] |
Book Review: Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: Watching The Clock Posted: 25 Jun 2012 02:31 PM PDT Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: Watching The Clock The Next Generation By Christopher L. Bennett Simon and Schuster | Pocket Books Paperback | Kindle Release Date: April 26, 2011 Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: Watching the Clock is one of the most unique Star Trek: The Next Generation books I have read. Even though this book has been out for a year, I decided to read it anyway and find out what it was all about. It has one of my favorite Star Trek topics, which is time travel. The book starts off with two agents from the Department of Temporal Investigations (which deals with time travel laws and regulations and sometimes detective work on temporal crimes) named Gariff Lucsly and Marion Dulmur who are investigating a temporal displacement of a Federation starship that has been found after being lost in time for 16 years. On board the ship Lucsly and Dulmur find an interesting young woman named Teresa Garcia and recruit her to become a new agent at the DTI [...] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2012 12:47 PM PDT Black Charity Written and Illustrated by Bal Speer Archaia Entertainment Release Date: March 27, 2012 Cover Price: $19.95 Did you ever see Four Rooms? A little crazy, several separate stories that eventually intertwined? Yeah, that's what Black Charity does...only in a totally kickass way! I don't have a clue who Bal Speer is, but I totally need to have a pint with this guy. No, really. I want to meet him and hang for a day, just to pick that dark and twisted mind a little bit. We start off with our basic "everyman" named Charlie who is a bit too hung up on his ex-girlfriend, Louise. We meet his neighbors: Duncan the OCD dog poop aficionado, Polly the work-at-home dominatrix, even an older blind guy that always seems to be right around the corner. Add to this motley crew (damn, I wanted to type Motley Crue there) a subtle murder that is made to look like a suicide and you get a run-for-your-life action comic! [...] |
