Silber Media: Build

The Matchbook Comics of Silber Media

People don't say this often enough, but mini comics are cool. Really cool.

Those tiny, cheap volumes printed on 12 generic pieces of printer paper, folded and half held together by a single staple down the middle? Love them. Those pretentious, autobiographical comics you only find in comic book stores in walking distance to some rinky-dink liberal arts college? Can't get enough of them. Those ugly, xeroxed books with art that looks like it was done by some disgruntled high school kid and, in fact, probably was? Those are my favorites!

Enter Brian John Mitchell. He's been doing his own style of minis since 2003. A musician out of North Carolina with a small record label, Silber Records, he sells his own matchbook-sized comics through his website and at shows. They're small in size, but large in scope. Whether it's a western or a domestic drama, an autobio-comedy or a straight sci-fi, the style stays essentially the same. One panel per page. Short, declarative sentences. Like a haiku, it's a sparse but surprisingly rich approach to doing comics [...]

The concluding chapters of KOTOR: War completes the prospect of an escalating war between the Republic and the Mandalorians through the eyes of former Jedi, Zayne Carrick. The final two issues of the Star Wars series deliver a satisfying conclusion, which sadly smarts from some somewhat disjointed storytelling. Despite this, the concluding episodes fare much better than the initial episodes, indicating that it should make for some fair reading as a collected edition.

To set the stage, the Republic is deep into its crusade against the Mandalorians. Unwillingly drafted into armed forces representing his home world, ex-Jedi Zayne Carrick eventually finds himself captured by a group of Mandalorians lead by several disgruntled former Jedi Masters. Redubbing themselves as "The Mandalorian Knights," they set their sights on prolonging the war against the Republic [...]

Tony Daniel Leaving ‘Detective Comics’ This Fall

Detective Comics #1 by Tony Daniel

Tony Daniel announced Friday via Facebook that he would no longer be contributing his creative talents to the Batman-starring Detective Comics after September.

Daniel noted in his Facebook post that his last written issue will be Detective Comics #12, while his art will last appear in Detective Comics #0 in September. Daniel goes on to say that he will still be working with DC on new projects that have yet to be announced, but expects the public to hear about them starting next week and leading into San Diego Comic-Con.

One of the more interesting things to take from this news is that when Daniel is referring to his run, he says "Batman/Detective" as in he may be done with the character for the time being. The reason that this is interesting is that, for the past several years, Daniel has been in some way involved in major storylines and titles regarding Batman. Starting with Grant Morrison's Batman run, Daniel was either on writing or art duties on RIP, Battle for the Cowl, Batman, and Detective Comics with last year's DC relaunch. He's been involved in Batman's world for a very long time, so for fans of the character and Daniel's work, this is a big change [...]

Happy Birthday, Indiana Jones!

Indiana Jones

Happy Birthday greetings today to Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr., the fictional main character and archeologist of the Indiana Jones franchise, created by the dynamic film duo of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg which has spawned four theatrical features, in which the character was portrayed and popularized in cinema lore by Harrison Ford, and also portrayed by others in younger or older and even video game incarnations of the fabled character.

Dr. Jones was born on July 1st, 1899 as the story goes. Most of the films take place in the character's heyday during the 1930s. The film franchise followed Jones' pursuits of adventurous discovery: fighting Nazi's in the first film (Raiders of the Lost Ark), in which he uncovered the Ark of the Covenant; in the second film (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), which acted as a prequel, audiences saw Jones' exploits take him to India to uncover Sankara stones and his attempts to liberate enslaved children; the third installment (Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade) showed an early teen version of the character (played by River Phoenix) and found him reconnecting with his father (played by Sean Connery) in adulthood to try and locate the famed Holy Grail; and by the 4th film (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), set almost 20 years later than the third installment (taking place in 1959), Jones was trying to outwit the Russians who wanted to harness the power of a Crystal Skull which was in concert with celestial beings. In that final to date film, it is discovered that Indy (his nickname in the films) fathered a biological child, Henry "Mutt" Williams, played by Shia Labeouf, who, rumor has it, will take over the film franchise [...]
