Interview: ‘Mission To Lars’ Producer Kate Spicer

Kate Spicer - Mission To Lars

"We realized very early on that Tom is much more unpredictable than any rock star." Kate Spicer is talking about her brother and focus of her feature documentary. Made alongside their brother Will, Mission To Lars is their story of trying to set up a meeting between Tom and his hero, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. Tom has Fragile X syndrome, a condition described by Kate in the trailer as "autism with bells on" which created massive challenges for all of them.

Before she found herself adding Filmmaker to her business card, Kate was a lifestyle journalist; far from the heavy metal junkie she had to become. In a surprisingly honest interview, Kate talked to me about those challenges in making the film, our culture's attitude to people with learning disabilities, and her relationship with her brothers.

Geeks of Doom: Are you excited for people to see the film now it's finished?

Kate Spicer: Excited isn't the word because we're doing so much of this on our own, which means there's quite a lot to worry about. I enjoy a lot of it in hindsight, but I feel like if I stop to enjoy it, it will all go wrong! [...]

Support This: The Heroes Doc

The Heroes Doc Banner

Guys, there's a geek-tastic documentary in the works that could really use your support on Kickstarter! The Heroes Doc by Jere Thomas and Matthew Tyndall is the story of the 30th anniversary of the Heroes Convention, hosted by Shelton Drum, owner of the legendary comic book shop Heroes Aren't Hard to Find.

The Heroes Doc tells the story of how the "Emerald City of the East" convention started in a hotel conference room and has grown to be one of the largest independent comic book conventions in the nation. The documentary tells the complete story of the man, the store, the convention, and all the people that make it possible.

Jere and Matt have been following the Heroes team since last August; learning the day-to-day operations, watching as they prepare for special events like Free Comic Book Day, and looking at all of the behind-the scenes-action as they get ready for this year's convention [...]

Movie Review: Ted

Ted Movie Poster

Ted
Directed by Seth MacFarlane
Written by Seth MacFarlane
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Giovanni Ribisi, Jessica Stroup, Patrick Warburton, Joel McHale
Universal Pictures
Rated R | 106 Minutes
Release Date: June 29, 2012

Ted might be the funniest film of the year. I'm actually kind of ashamed of how much I laughed during it. I'm talking about doubled-over, insane laughter that could be (and probably was) mistaken for a hysterical screaming fit - like I was being stabbed in the theater, Julius Caesar-style. Et tu, Seth?

From Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show, Ted stars Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett who, as the result of a childhood wish, has a living, breathing teddy bear companion in Ted (voiced by MacFarlane). John's girlfriend of four years, Lori (Mila Kunis), wants more from their relationship and John will be forced to choose between the love of his life and his plush, stuffed best friend.

MacFarlane's live-action effort features seamless computer animation visual effects facilities Tippett Studio (as in Phil Tippet, a childhood hero of mine) and Iloura. MacFarlane wrote the screenplay with Family Guy colleagues Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild. The amazing thing is, Ted feels like a live-action extension of MacFarlane's signature style of animated shenanigans. From the random, completely obscure pop culture references to the surprise cameos, Ted instantly made me dream of a photorealistic Family Guy movie in the stylings of The Adventures of Tintin [...]

Moonrise Kingdom: The Wes Anderson Effect

Moonrise Kingdom: Go-Go Binoculars!

Here's the thing... I like Wes Anderson, I really do. I think he's an extremely talented, quirky fellow who makes entertaining, gorgeous cinematic experiences. Unfortunately, I have this sneaking suspicion that instead of being the next Scorsese or Coppola, Anderson could easily become the next Tim Burton - or the hipster, Instagram version of Zack Snyder.

I know, I know - blasphemy, right? Before you set fire to your vintage collection of Kinks records and hurl Criterion Collection DVDs of Rushmore and Bottle Rocket at my face, understand that I enjoy Anderson's entire filmography (including that brilliant American Express commercial). All I'm saying is, the guy has been constantly criticized for putting style over substance and maybe it's time we all admit that there's some truth to that.

I loved Moonrise Kingdom. I think it's one of the best films of the year - but, at the same time, I experienced a bit of deja vu - like I had seen this movie before. And then I realized I had. I saw it in 2009 when it was called The Fantastic Mr. Fox and before that when it was called The Darjeeling Limited, and so on and so forth [...]

‘Django Unchained’ Teaser: Samuel L. Jackson Has A Few Words For Tarantino Fans

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 08:28 AM PDT

Django Unchained

Before Quentin Tarantino can make his grand entrance at the San Diego Comic-Con later this month, he and Jamie Foxx gave their fans a slight tease of Django Unchained at the BET Awards. What they showed can be defined as a true teaser, so while they were nothing more than very quick glimpses of the movie, we got to see some new teases that were not seen in either the domestic or international trailers. Watch the teaser here below.

The music for the new Django Unchained trailer plays a bit like the previous two trailers. This time, however, they really play up to the spaghetti western gerne and use Ennio Morricone's "Ecstasy of Gold," which is then followed up by James Brown's "The Big Payback." [...]
