Posted: 06 Jul 2012 05:00 PM PDT Point Blank Netflix Streaming DVD | Blu-ray Directed by Fred Cavayé Starring Gilles Lellouche, Roschdy Zem, Gérard Lanvin, Elena Anaya, Mireille Perrier, Claire Perot Magnolia Pictures Originally Released: December 01, 2010 Point Blank hits all-speed-ahead from the very beginning. It is unapologetically an action film, with a good dose of thriller elements and high suspense. Made in France under the title À Bout Portant, the movie is an enjoyable experience with some brilliant performances from some excellent actors who I hope we will see more of in future cinema experiences. Get out your popcorn and don't look for meaning, subtext, or symbolism – this is a pure action flick taking influence and structure from some of the most reliable and exciting stories of ages long gone. Disney In Depth: The State of the Disney Animated Short Film Posted: 06 Jul 2012 03:56 PM PDT For decades the Disney animated short films, starring the classic gang of Mickey and friends, dominated the screens with innocence and cheer. But that era is not one forgotten. Merely it exists in the past tense, just like the blockbuster musicals that made Disney, Disney. Nevertheless, Walt Disney Animation Studios is experiencing a period of re-growth, what some would argue could be the "third renaissance." Tangled and the forthcoming Wreck-It Ralph are believed to represent that new beginning. In any case, the art of the short film within the studio is also undergoing a fantastic period of re-interest and ingenuity. For much of the last decade, when Disney animation was arguably struggling in producing quality features, both in their theatrical and direct-to-video releases, developing short films was placed on the back-burner. Perhaps not intentionally, but they were relegated to little-seen pictures, film festivals, and bonus features on DVDs. The Annie Award-winning short Lorenzo, a charming little tale about a cat's tail that takes over its life, is utterly creative. But where was this long-delayed piece played to audiences? Try the 2004 Kate Hudson romantic comedy Raising Helen, which underwhelmed at the box office. How was it decided that a short like this be paired with a PG-13 comedy starring Goldie Hawn's daughter? Though each of these films is adorable in its own right, one must wonder why these were paired together [...] |
IDW’s ‘Comic Book History Of Comics’ Goes Back To Press Posted: 06 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT IDW Publishing announced today that the first printing of the Comic Book History of Comics by Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey has sold out, and that they are going back to print. Now normally, I don't give two figs when a comics publisher announces a new printing of a sold out book, but I had to show this off for a couple of reasons. [...] |
Comics Review: Hello, Do YOU Work Here? Posted: 06 Jul 2012 02:00 PM PDT Hello, Do YOU Work Here? Compiled/Designed by Peter Simeti Story by Various Submissions Illustrations by Michael Oppenheimer, Kelly Williams, Michael nelson, John Shaver, John Bulmer, Tom Kelly, J. Rozen, Daniel Thollin, Brian Beardsley, John Bulmer, Jeff McComsey, Kelly Williams, Dave Arhar, Kevin Christensen, Bret M. Herholz, Chad Storhl, Steve Black, Michael S. Bracco, Oliver Kirby, Michael Czerniawski, Gary Goodrich, Dave Arhah, Jeremy Massie, Andi Papelitzky, Douglas Draper Jr. Introduction by Alex Robinson Alterna Comics Cover Price: $7.99 I spent the summer of 2002 working alone at a local 24-hour convenient store doing the 4pm to midnight shift. On one particularly brutal night my manager got in to relieve me about 10 minutes early. "Just give me a minute," she informed me, as she took out her cellphone, "I'm going to check in on my daughter." Maggie, my manager's daughter, was maybe 16, 17 years old and went by the name, I'm not kidding: Magical. This is the side of the conversation that I heard [...] |
‘Taken 2′ Trailer: Liam Neeson Goes From Happy Family Time To Hostage In 58 Seconds Posted: 06 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT There's a new international trailer for the kidnapping thriller Taken 2. The first Taken had Liam Neeson fighting off an underground human trafficking group that kidnapped his daughter. Now the tables have turned and its Bryan Millis and his wife who need to be saved from the very people he killed in the first Taken. The twist is, Bryan's daughter (Maggie Grace) will be doing the saving. Check out the trailer below. Well she won't be doing it alone. This new international trailer shows how Bryan and his wife get kidnapped and how Bryan converses with his daughter over the phone is a slight nod to the original film. Other than that, there's no new footage. We know that by killing off the group that kidnapped his daughter, Bryan has caused the father (Rade Sherbedgia) of one of his victims to seek out revenge [...] |
Comic Review: Masters of the Universe: The Lost Knight Posted: 06 Jul 2012 12:03 PM PDT Masters of the Universe: The Lost Knight Written by Geoff Johns Pencils by Howard Porter Inks by John Livesay Colors by Carrie Strachan Letters by Sal Cipriano Cover by Howard Porter & John Livesay DC Comics Release Date: June 23, 2012 Cover Price: $.99 When reading Masters of the Universe: The Lost Knight, you get the feeling that if Mattel was still including mini-comics with their toys, this is the one that would be included with Sir Laser Lot. DC Comics will be releasing these shorter, digital comics every two weeks as a companion or supplement to its Masters of the Universe six-issue miniseries that debuted in comic stores on July 4th. And by the looks of things, we're in for some GREAT reading. I guess you could say this Geoff Johns guy knows how to write a comic. But, does he know how to write a licensed property comic? Guess what folks, all those DC Comics that he writes, at this point ARE licensed properties. And to answer my own question, YES, he does. Time/page-wise, he doesn't have much to work with, as this comic is about 17 or 18 pages long, a little shorter than what he's used to working with. And, to be fair, because of the digital format, most of the pages are only feature a couple of panels. BUT, what he DOES do is pack a TON of story into these panels [...] |
Mondo Releasing Poster Series For Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ Posted: 06 Jul 2012 11:00 AM PDT If Sauron's Ring was the one ring to rule them all, then Mondo would be its equivalent in poster form. As you might have guessed based on the opening, Mondo has announced that they will be releasing specially commissioned posters for Peter Jackson's The Lord of The Rings film series. The poster series will include all films from the trilogy drawn up by multiple artists. And to start things off we have a poster for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by artist Aaron Horkey, which was unveiled this last night at the Mondo Mystery Movie X at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. Like most of these Mondo Mystery Movie screenings, you don't know what you are going to see until they hand out the print to you. Not that it would deter me from watching it, but these posters are only available to those who attend the screenings, and that's what bums me out the most. Still check out the cool Mondo poster here for The Return of the King below [...] |
Peter Jackson Wraps Principal Photography For ‘The Hobbit’ Posted: 06 Jul 2012 10:15 AM PDT It was a long road for The Hobbit, with MGM's problematic financial issues being the main reason of the stall, but the two-part film has finally wrapped principal photography. To help commemorate such a momentous occasion Peter Jackson has sent us a bit of a tease. Check out the full image below. The photo was posted on Facebook, and as you can see, it was a pretty stressful shoot. I'm not stirring up rumors, just saying that it was a very lengthy production. But here is what Jackson had to say about wrapping principal photography for The Hobbit [...] |
Three Striking IMAX Posters For ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Posted: 06 Jul 2012 09:30 AM PDT If a film is going to be presented in IMAX, it's almost a guarantee that their will be a free poster handed out the night of the midnight release. From Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol to John Carter to Prometheus and most recently to The Amazing Spider-Man. They create these posters for the masses and there is more then plenty for everyone. Now with The Dark Knight Rises just a few weeks away from release, there will be three new posters for the film. Yes three. Check them out below. A common gripe with some of these posters is that, while they are good, they don't exactly hold a candle to most pieces that an organization like Mondo releases. I have a couple of these IMAX posters -- not these ones in particular -- and while they are framed, it just doesn't seem as cool as the other ones that hang on my wall [...] |

Happy 66th Birthday Sylvester Stallone! Posted: 06 Jul 2012 08:00 AM PDT Happy Birthday greetings to Sylvester Stallone, who turns 66 today! The actor, screenwriter, and director has been around now for over 4 decades, and has been responsible for at least two of the silver screen's most popular characters of all time: Rocky Balboa and John Rambo -- both spawning film franchises that made Stallone one of the most bankable and recognized figures in Hollywood history. Born Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone in New York City on July 6th 1946 to Frank Stallone Sr., who was a hairdresser, and his mother Jackie, primarily an astrologer, Stallone suffered a difficult birth which led to the lower half of his face being paralyzed, including some of his lip, tongue, and chin. Superhero Economics: A Financial Comparison Between Batman and Spider-Man Posted: 06 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT When dealing with superheroes, it usually comes down to who would beat who in a one-on-one fight. Good guys, bad guys---we just can't help but wonder who'd prove to be the best of them all. But how often have you wondered about the financial status of your favorite comic book characters? Not very often, in all likelihood. And if it is often, it's time for you to take a vacation. Somewhere nice. I recommend Maui. It's lovely. [...] |
